A week or so ago, hidden posted a really swell post about guitars. It got me thinking about my own musical evolution. If this sucks, blame him for inspiring it.
My introduction to music came at a very young age. My mom actually met my dad because my dad played drums in my uncle's country band. Some of my earliest memories are sitting in my uncles garage while the band rehearsed. They mostly played country, southern rock, and oldies so it was a lot of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Skynard, Mellancamp, Bob Seager, and so on. I'm not a fan of country music and never really have been (it's the tool of the devil), but it inspired a love of live music which has been with me ever since.
One of my defining musical (and hell, spiritual) moments came when I was 9 years old. I came down stairs to find my mom and sister were gone. They were at a girls scout meeting or softball game or whoring or something - doesn't really matter. Dad was home though and he was listening to a strange wonderful band I had never heard. I asked who they were and he said their name was Led Zeppelin. He took the stereo speakers down and placed them on the floor. He and I spent the morning hanging out between those two speakers, shooting the breeze and listening to the tunes. My Dad is cooler than yours.
And so, for the next several years I listened to some of Dad's collection, most of which was on records. The Rolling Stones, Credence, The Animals, the Kinks, The Who, the Woodstock Live album... the idea that music could be something other than country crap really excited me and I wanted more.
On my own I discovered the local rock station, which was playing mostly hair metal. Motley Crue and Poison and the like. I liked it because it was something I hadn't heard yet and I appreciated their "edge" but in the back of my mind I always knew that guys shouldn't wear leather pants and make up. It was all I had though so I clung to it. My 80's hair metal collection is embarrassingly large.
It was also around that time that my friends older sister started playing Aerosmith and Dead Milkmen. (You know what Stuart? I like you. You're not like the other people here, at the trailer park). I specifically asked for more and she was nice enough to dub me a Ramones greatest hits album. When the pope died, I made jokes. When Joey Ramone died, I cried. For me, he made three chords into a revolution.
About the time I turned 13, my older sister was dating a guy named Derrick. Later in life I broke Derrick's nose, but when we first met we got along splendidly. Derrick introduced me to Ozzy Osborne. I'm can't apologize for breaking his nose, but I can thank him for Ozzy. Derrick continued to expose me to new music. Derrick would buy a tape or CD and then make me a copy. He gave me my first copy of Metallica, Ride the Lighting and also Justice for All. I duplicated his love of heavy metal and absorbed it like a sponge.
That is also when Appetite for Destruction came out. Personal opinion - one of the best albums of all time. The band had a chemistry with that album which they have never achieved since.
Derrick also smoked a lot of pot. I'm not saying pot is good or bad, I'm just saying he listened to Pink Floyd. The way Dark side of the Moon flowed from one song to the next was a new definition of poetry for me. Wish You Were Here is the reason I wanted to learn to play guitar.
It was also about that time that I discovered my uncle's record collection. The band was practicing one afternoon and I was hanging out with them (I worked light/sound for any gig they could get me in at the time). I thumbed through the records of mostly country until I came to a Black Sabbath album. I asked whose it was and my uncle said it was his. I called bullshit. I then witnessed my uncle and father play Iron Man. Watching my dad play drums on iron man is further proof that he is way cooler than your dad.
A lot happened at once about the time I turned 16. One of the most influential was a little band called Nirvana hit the airwaves. They were quickly followed by Primus and Pearl Jam (which was great and then got severely over played). Good God, how I loved grunge music at the time. I was 16 living in the middle of nowhere and pissed off at the world because of it. I identified with the pissed off and yet somehow numb feelings this music (and lifestyle) portrayed.
At the same time I was working with a man named Bolt. We spent several hours together in a truck for work. We were driving down the road one day and I was thumbing through different stations looking for anything that would come in. He suddenly yelled "Whoa, go back." I tuned back a little and found an obscure program on an obscure radio station which focused on the blues. Bolt threatened to break my arm if I changed it and rightfully so.
The Blues were freaking fascinating to me because I heard the roots of all the rock and country music I had heard up to that point. The real difference between country and the blues is your girl still leaves you, but you don't have to watch NASCAR with the Blues. John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters were added to my collection within a week.
It was also about that time I could go to campus and listen to live bands. One of my favorites was a band called My Brothers Keeper. They did a cover of Domino that was dead on. I was also 16 and on a college campus, so I forgive myself for getting into Dave Matthews for awhile.
While this was going on, my buddy Mike was getting into rap. We listened to Public Enemy and NWA and while I appreciated it, it never made it into my collection. I didn't connect with it. But, it was there just the same.
Fast forward to me at about 19. The future ex-wife and I moved into together. My first clue that we weren't going to work out was her taste in music sucked. Chick stuff like Indigo Girls and Ani DiFranco (although Both Hands is a good song). Like rap, I just never connected with it. She was also a Dead Head. I don't know what I hate worse - The Grateful Dead or Dead Heads. Again, just never connected.
My buddy Chris was in a band though which I was enjoying. (Check them out at www.penguinrocks.com). He and I started trading influences. Because of him I was introduced to bands like the Dobie Brothers, Elvis Costello, and a band called the Northern Mississippi All Stars. I love the way they mix so many styles at once.
My other friend, also named Chris, discovered pot about that time. His music tastes made it's way into my car, but not always my heart. For awhile he was on an Beatles kick. His dealer got him into Fleetwood Mac and Paul Simon. Neither did much for me. However, he did get me into the Doors and I'm still a fan. We also dabbled in some reggae, which I must say I still enjoy. Like most small town white boys though, we really only went as far as Bob Marley. Our common ground was actually Mozart and Bach. We discovered that people who think they have diverse taste because they like heavy metal and classical should be kicked in the baby makers.
By the time the ex and I split, I was in my mid-twenties and living in Chicago. That's when I met my buddy Hack. He took me around and showed my several places with live music like Double Door, Empty Bottle, and Wise Fools Pub. That is still one of my favorite local hangouts for live music. The first time I was there I saw Halfway Jane (www.halfwayjane.com ). Their next local show is at Cubby Bear on 4/11 and I am going if anyone is in the area.
And finally, at age 31, I started taking guitar lessons at the Old Town School of Music. I've always wanted to learn to play but never got around to it. I live 6 blocks from Old Town so I decided it was now or never. I'm 3 or 4 lessons in now and have a long way to go but am enjoying it.
I have no real way to end this post, so here is one of the playlists from my iPod when I get my fat ass up to jog.
Save Me - Unwritten Law
Minority - Green Day
Ruby Soho - Rancid
Ring of Fire - Social Distortion
Everything about you - Ugly Kid Joe
Possum Kingdom - Toadies
Peaches - President of the US
Mrs. Robinson - The Lemonheads
What are you listening to and where can I find it?

Fair enough Bubba and thanks. This is a year long program I'm in now... it's 5 "semesters" that are each 8 weeks long. When I finish that I have the option of taking some specialized courses. I'm doing these for now and then we'll see what happens. Again, I'm not looking to be a rockstar, just play for fun.

Queen was the first band I ever went nuts over, but I've grown to mostly hate them. All that six-part harmony stuff is very trite to me, not to mention the "orchestral" guitar overdubs.
I remember being in my early teens and really liking "Dead On Time" when Jazz came out and that got me into Queen. Then I discovered the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Who, etc and I was obsessed with those bands for a while. I owned every official album by all those bands at one point. Then I discovered the Rolling Stones and that was a pretty big turning point. I still love the Stones early stuff as much as anything else I listen to, but I don't listen to many of those other huge classic rock bands anymore. Maybe certain Beatles and Pink Floyd albums from time to time. 99% of the best music of the 60s and 70s gets overlooked by today's classic rock radio.

I agree 100% with your last sentence. Most of the good songs on albums is passed over by moronic DJs.

Doodles. Don't waste time on Bubba. He sits there in his own filth masturbating over thoughts of how funny and witty he thinks he is. Then he acts affronted if anyone actually tells him just how stultifyingly dull he really and truly is.
Usually some comment about how he was 'blah blah blah' when you were still in nappies.
It usually goes back to some 'when you were a child' reference.
*goes to scrub flesh off fingers*

Classic rock is my favorite by far: Queen, Beatles and Pink Floyd are my staples there. I love well played bag pipes. Classical music for active listening. Unfortunatly I have atleast 10 Elton John songs on my iPod that I listen to reguarly. Journey is my favorite band next to Queen. I find Bowling for Soup to actually be decent. Stairway to Heaven has my favorite guitar solo ever.
That about ocvers me.

Definitely, but it's a lot to ask of most people. I used to listen to a lot of Indian, Brazilian, and African music, and I still do from time to time, but I get the most out of stuff that's in English so I don't get around to listening to the other stuff very often anymore. It's hard to know where to start when you're looking for good "world" music.

Thanks again pepsi.
And lets be clear - I have no delusions of grandeur here. I'm learning to play guitar to pick up women. That's the long and short of it.
(Kidding - it's just for fun. Picking up women is a nice side effect).
The Harmonica is easy huh? I've toyed with the idea. It's a lot more portable than the guitar.
==============
Mediocrity on the harmonica is easy. Being GOOD on it is a multi-year endeavor. It doesn't come in a week or a year.
Think about what I said about lessons. Keep them up as long as you can afford them. When you think you are better than your teacher, show him. If you are, fine. If not, stay.

If you want to do lessons to just get the basics, then there's nothing wrong with that. Especially if you have no musical background whatsoever. But you want to drop the lessons as soon as you have some comfort on the instrument. Maybe after ten or fifteen lessons or something. I would also recommend picking up some other instruments once you've been playing guitar for a year. Harmonica is easy as hell. If you can get a keyboard or have access to a piano then that's great, too. Having access to drums is a bit of a luxury, but I would recommend it because they are so much fun.
Listen to a lot of simple guitar songs and try to play them from ear once you know your way around the frets.
If you want to be a guitar virtuoso then ignore my comments. If you want to have fun playing music and develop yourself as a potential songwriter or band member then I think my comments will be helpful. If you make it all about technicality then you're going to get frustrated faster.
Learning to read music is absolutely not necessary if you want to play rock and roll, blues, folk, country, or any of those kinds of things. It certainly doesn't hurt but it's a long road. You will need to know the names of notes and chords, and seeing guitar chords laid out on a piano is helpful, but going through the trouble to learn to read real musical notation might not be worth the time.
I can read music because I had years of piano and woodwind lessons when I was a kid but I never read music anymore. When I was first learning guitar I used tab and I practiced a bunch of chords and their relationships to each other.
I'm still on some prescription meds that are making me extremely dizzy and tired so I might not be as coherent as I'd like to be, unfortunately. The only hard and fast advice that I can give you with 100% non-delirious confidence is that you should dive right in and try to start playing three-chord (I-IV-V) rhythms and songs as soon as you're able to. It's fun and easy and a great starting point.

Thanks Bubba and Pepsi.
Over the last few years friends have showed me things here and there. I need professional help. The Old Town School of music is a pretty cool place. It's a non-accredited school that just gives lessons on almost any instrument you can think of.
However... lots of freaking hippies.

Don't bother with guitar lessons. Just look some chords and maybe a few tabs and learn yourself. It's so much more fun and rewarding to learn an instrument without much instruction. Find someone who plays guitar and pick up some chords and phrases here and there. Feeling out the guitar is so cool, though. You won't become a virtuoso but I don't see why anybody wants to be one anyway. Learn to play your own way. Play a lot.
---------------
My opinion? Start by ignoring PepsiCoke. The FIRST thing you want to do is learn to read music, if you can't already. Then, learn the note of every fret on every string. Most amateur guitarists may know the notes per string up to the fifth fret or so, but learning them all will be to your advantage.
Tablature is a cop-out for people who are to lazy to learn to read music.
Memorize all the chords and most of the inversions. A first-position C chord has a different sound than the C chord on the third fret using an A Barre fingering.
By all means, takes lessons from an accomplished teacher if you can afford it. He can turn you on to tricks you might not stumble upon for years.
PepsiCoke: I'm not trying to be an asshole, I just vehemently disagree with you. Unless you were being sarcastic-in which case- fuck you. :)

Listen to Brian Jonestown Massacre. Just about all of their music is free at http://www.bjmarchives.com
Listen to everything from Satanic Majesties Second Request through Bravery, Repetition and Noise. Listen to it A LOT. It should take you months to digest it all. Also watch the movie "DiG!"
Listen to all of the Rolling Stones albums and singles up to, and especially including, Exile On Main St. Ignore most of their stuff that followed
Listen to Buffalo Killers. They only have one album out so far but it's amazing. Buy it.
The latest album by The Izzys is great even if it's a bit derivative. You can get it mailed to you directly for five bucks including shipping.
The Black Keys' latest two albums are stellar and they have another coming out very soon.
Funkadelic has some fucking crazy badass psychedelic shit in their catalogue. Check out any Funkadelic album that has Eddie Hazel playing on it.
The Flamin' Groovies made an album called "Teenage Head" which is just sensational. Get that.
And there's always plenty of Hendrix to listen to.

==============================
I can see Lishy finding this title and going "Hmmm, this sounds interesting."
And then sneaking it into her purse and shoplifting it because she's a bad girl.
===
I might be a bad girl, but I'm not a thief.
I have never shoplifted anything in my life, with the exception of a candy bar when I was 4, and coincidentally, a candycane type thing on South St when I was a teenager, after waiting 10 min for someone to ring me up when they'd rather hang out in the back of the store. In fact, I once accidentally walked out of a store with a blank videotape I intended to buy, and walked back in to return it, unbeknownst to anyone.
Now..if you're talking about music piracy..THAT's a whole 'nother story. But that's not stealing.

I don't know FG, but I feel ya. For instance, a lot of people belive U2 is a good band. They actually suck despite popular opinion.
I'm OK on cheap trick. I won't turn it off if it comes on the radio, but I don't own any either. I saw them in Grant Park last summer and they put on a decent show. Of course, I was also really drunk.

I've always wondered how humans develop their tastes in music. For instance, sometimes you take an instant visceral dislike to a song, band, style, whatever. Everyone around you could be dancing and proclaiming how much they like the music, but you are fully convinced that your ears are about to start bleeding.
Why is that?
With that said, I despise Cheap Trick.

I can see Lishy finding this title and going "Hmmm, this sounds interesting."
And then sneaking it into her purse and shoplifting it because she's a bad girl.

Nice, thanks Shlongy. I'm at work and the office IT chaps are blocking this because of the word "Shlongy." I'll check it out from home.

Not to say that these artists hate men. Just that I'm not listening to any male artists because I hate all men right now.

I've been listening to a lot of Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Regina Spektor, Bjork, etc. lately. I'm going through a man-hating phase.
===
They love men too, don't we all? Maybe not on Boys for Pele, but otherwise. I never got an anti-male vibe from Regina Spektor.
I love the idea behind this post.

Nice Rhymenocerous. Someone in the office was singing the theme song to Fresh Prince the other day. It's been freaking stuck in my head ever since.

They are a rock band. Its not the hardest of rock but its pretty hard. Very chevelle-ish without all the whiny pussy emotion. Driver Not Included is one of the best albums.

I just go through phases sometimes where I hate all men and want them all to die. They only last a couple of days usually. They also normally fall during the week before my period, and I don't think it's a coincidence.

What's up with the hate Jeanneee?
I've been told I should start listening to Joni Mitchell Banjo because the guitar lessons are at a folk school. However, I just keep thinking everyone who tells me that is a tree hugging hippie. Are you a tree hugging hippie?

right now its "Draconian Love" by El-P (no not Emerson Lake and Palmer), from the album "I'll Sleep When You're Dead". Fantastic CD.
If your looking for workout music I would go with Orange 9MM.
