A variation on a theme by Phyllis Webb:
Shit, Expulsion, Digestion, Swallowing,
and Chewing. The Only Five Things,
the first of which I am doing, being in
the azaleas and dog-toothed violets
of the South of Canada. Do not tell me
this is a cold country. I am also in
the camellias and camas of early,
of abrupt birth.
It is shooting past, my bloody
judgment on the six o'clock news.
Quick, cut it off from the sphincter
of tired muscles, quick, for the
tiny skeletons and bulbs in it will tell you
how death grows and grows in Chili and
Pad Thai. Quick, for the small bones pinch
me and insects divulge my occult excrement
in the service of hyancinth, my trailing
begonia. And if you catch me resting
beside the steam, sighing against
the dewline of this pastoral, take
up your teeth, my flower's blossoming
stretched to a barrel, and join this grief, this
grief: that there are lambs, elegant black-
footed lambs all eaten for this scatology,
Beautiful.
