Hi, you!
I was just thinking of sometimes things that are sad are so much easier to remember, to write about. Everyone here has been through a lot in their lives; some stories are more compelling to us than others, but to each storyteller, his or her experience is no more or less painful than another's.
I just want to say that, right now, I feel a great sense of gratitude.
I'm very lucky, blessed and grateful that both of my parents are alive, and that they are the most wonderful and supportive parents could have ever dreamed of having. They've always been there for me, spent time with me, took care of me when I was ill, read to me, cheered me up when I was low, told me off when I deserved it. They never let me fall. For that I am eternally grateful.
I'm also about to be an aunt again. My older sibling has adopted her second disabled child from China in the space of a year, and the adoption will be complete this week. I will learn to clean and change the new little girl's tracheotomy, just as I will learn to take care of the other little girl's prosthetic leg. I suspect I will learn some Mandarin along the way, too.
I work as an editor, which is something that thankfully came naturally to me. I'm very grateful to have had some great jobs in that field. I can pay my bills, and for that, I am very, very thankful.
Over the past few years, I have had some losses; I lost a cherished pet of 13 years to a botched surgery, and did everything I could do to save him. I fought with every resource I had, but I lost that battle and so did he. I'm so happy to have known him, and he enriched my life more than I can even express. I still cry, and he's been gone more than a year now. I miss him every day, but I am grateful he's no longer in pain.
Other losses were necessary: changes in friends, lovers. But when you let go of friendships that are no longer good, I've found that better ones come in to take their place, and the ones that stick by you over the years through ups and downs really become more and more precious. For them I am very thankful.
And finally to those of you I've met here, in real life, through email, through snail mail, on the phone, thank you. There are some really wonderful people out there, and just because they don't live nearby doesn't mean they're not great friends. So thank you Director, Bart, Rob_Berg, JoeyG, EmissionImpossible, BeforeEmily, GodChicken, SgtHartman, Monkeyswithguns, HaikuMikoo, CaptainThorns, HBTS, Kaos King, Berty, PolyamorousAJ, BrdnNkd, Assholy, w_t_a_y_s_t_r_m, Redskies, Scourge, and Oathmeal for "friending" me, doing the odd IM, or being honest-to-goodness friends IRL. Special thank you to ih8u2man, who is awesome and has a birthday today. Happy birthday, h8!

We're all adults. We all do what we want all the time. Even if that means sitting alone in the dark clenching and unclenching our fists in paralysed terror and rage it is still the thing we want to do most in all of things at the time.
Thusly you will spend time with this man who you like and who likes you in a relationship neither of you really want because boats are cool. They say life is just a series of calamaties interspersed with glimmers of distraction though, so at least you've got a boat. And a cat. And a man who takes care of his body and doesn't smell of burgers.
I guess by that you're doing better than Experima.
I wish I'd made more bad decisions. When I was a kid I wanted to be an actor, but gave up when I realised I was terrible at it. I should have plodded on regardless, degrading myself in two-bit shows and clamouring for the attention of people I will never be able to impress. My God. I really shouldn't have, thank GOd I didn't.
This world is all too modern for me; there's no longer any need for lighthouse keepers. I always wanted to be a lighthouse keeper. Ever since I was a boy and went to South Stack off Holyhead mountain. I always hated the sea though. The stench of death and that blasted wind. I'd lie there in the bunk in that tiny caravan getting rocked by the wind and listening to seabirds walking on the roof and I would dream about being buried alive. I swear that place made my a claustrophiliac, which is why I reckon I have difficulty with all these expansive desires you have.
Now all I can think about now is going to the government and pretending to be autistic so I can live in a box forever. It'd have rugs over the walls to keep the noise out. This doesn't help you with determining what is and is not best of course. Although I suppose I already said that there are no regrets; you just do what you want most at the time. I am sure your man there is a terrific lover who almost never talks about Jesus in the morning.
He DOES things though. Like, he gets out of bed on a sunday. That's just not natural.

Being in a relationship with someone you like and who likes you back isn't an easy feat. it means that when the other features in your life (i.e. your house/boat/friends/pets) are all gone, you can sit on the curb with that person getting horribly drunk and laughing about what losers you both are. Liking someone menas that when the demonstrate that they are less than perfect, you can react with a little understanding and tolerance. There was never any question of which course of action I should take. I like knowing that I will be forgiven for being a hopless lover and talking about Jesus in the morning.
As I get older my expansive desires become, well, less expansive. Spend your whole life searching for happiness and you will miss the wood for the trees. You wanted to be a light house keeper and you wanted to be an actor. Your desires quite possibly remain unchanged. I still want to work in air traffic control, I did not follow that desire because where as the pleasure taken in flicking all the little switches may have kept me entertained for years if I remained at age four, it would now grow tried very quickly. Somedays I still just want to be the person who gets to press all the buttons.
you may not be a lighthouse keeper, but you have succeeded in making sure you live a life of subtle isolation and antisocial behaviour. You are not a fairly tale characture who has to lock themselves in a tower to be alone. As you have discovered, there are many more conveniant ways to hide from the world around you. Change is nothing to fear, but you have managed to make a life based around it. Hats off to you my friend, you are without realising it, following your dreams.

my life has been a real wild ride. one thing is certain, it's never been boring. i'm going to have stories for the grandkids if i ever have them, that's for sure. i'm grateful for how lucky i am too. i have a great family and i've been lucky enough to have great success in my career early in life. i'm only 26, so if i've experienced all this stuff already, i can't wait to see what the future holds.

We're all adults. We all do what we want all the time. Even if that means sitting alone in the dark clenching and unclenching our fists in paralysed terror and rage it is still the thing we want to do most in all of things at the time.

They say life is just a series of calamaties interspersed with glimmers of distraction though, so at least you've got a boat. And a cat. And a man who takes care of his body and doesn't smell of burgers.

I wish I'd made more bad decisions. When I was a kid I wanted to be an actor, but gave up when I realised I was terrible at it. I should have plodded on regardless, degrading myself in two-bit shows and clamouring for the attention of people I will never be able to impress. My God. I really shouldn't have, thank GOd I didn't.
This world is all too modern for me; there's no longer any need for lighthouse keepers. I always wanted to be a lighthouse keeper. Ever since I was a boy and went to South Stack off Holyhead mountain. I always hated the sea though. The stench of death and that blasted wind. I'd lie there in the bunk in that tiny caravan getting rocked by the wind and listening to seabirds walking on the roof and I would dream about being buried alive. I swear that place made my a claustrophiliac, which is why I reckon I have difficulty with all these expansive desires you have.
Now all I can think about now is going to the government and pretending to be autistic so I can live in a box forever. It'd have rugs over the walls to keep the noise out. This doesn't help you with determining what is and is not best of course. Although I suppose I already said that there are no regrets; you just do what you want most at the time. I am sure your man there is a terrific lover who almost never talks about Jesus in the morning.
He DOES things though. Like, he gets out of bed on a sunday. That's just not natural.

Banjo: thanks for the opinion. I know you don't know me, but very honestly, many people here do. They might disagree with your assessment of me.
As far as friends go, I didn't say I pushed anyone aside. I retain friends I've had since grade school. On the contrary, I was referring to some relationships that naturally had gone sour, not that I should have to explain it...but anyone who's ever broken up with anyone or lost someone in some way knows there is pain involved. But I am trying to look on the good side.
I don't have a charmed life; I am just thankful for what I do have. I have no rose coloured glasses. But I think a person has a choice to see their lives in a good light or a bad light.
Things I write have meaning to those I write them for in some cases; in other cases, I feel I tell stories appropriate to a worldwide web forum. I'm not interested, for example, to expand on my Ten Tiny True Stories and make them deep; they were inspired by a book I read that was simple and lovely in that simplicity. It resonated with many here; more than 70 other people, give or take, responded to mine with their own similar stories. This may have been before your time.
If you think this lacked emotion, I'm sorry for you. I know it will get me -2d to admit it, but I actually had tears streaming down my face when I wrote some parts of this.
Thank you, too, for whatever made you want to read any of what I've written.

I feel if I rate this badly then I'll get the whole 'we had an argument the other day and you only did it for that' type bollocks.
I would have rated this a big fat -2 for genuine reasons.
Old friendships do not get weary and what I've learned is that old friends are the best and friends are not people who can be pushed aside when the relationship does not suit you anymore. You should hang onto friends and respect what they say and take their advice as good advice. Sometimes they do not follow it and I guess neither do any of us. Wouldn't we all be grand going around doing everything we were supposed to do all of the time.
You've got a lot to be thankful for... Quite obviously your life is charmed but I hope you spare a thought for those who end up in difficult circumstances through no fault of their own.
