i'm a wanderin' journeyman who's pathway's obsolete
and every road down which i go leaves dust upon my feet
and i ain't cashin' no paycheck, 'cause i ain't worked in years
the only occupation i'll claim is the man who lost his fears,
or sold them to a gypsy gal in exchange for gold and things,
with which he planted money trees for him to reap next spring.
did the holy buddhist gardener leave a statue in your flowers?
it ain't me reading sutras at your church bell ringing hours
or buying bullshit blasphemy spoken from a false-held stand
by a Judas wearing robes of faith and shouting, waving hands
i'll just head on down the road, and maybe even turn self West
and find myself a sacred place where the common man is blessed.
when the statues made of Samuel tumble and turn back into dust
we sing of matchbook fireflies and of going to Reno or bust
but no, there ain't no money for gas so i gotta find some dough
and bake me up a cake to take with me on down this road
i think i lost my almanac somewhere way down highway 64
and baby, maybe means that i ain't comin' 'round no more.
