In Sally's *ahem* extensive research for this post, I found out John Paul II actually got snitty with the media for calling it a "popemobile"; saying it sounded "undignified".
The windows being down bewildered me too, but then Benedict hasn't been shot at (yet). I guarantee you J.P.'s windows were never down.
