I watched my eldest score two goals today as his under 11 football side systematically tore their opponents limb from limb, curious little soldiers handing out a football lesson - determined to win and focused yet almost concerned by how simple it seemed and apologetic. His first goal would've torn the net from the frame if he hadn't kicked it like a girl, the second was an exocet across the eighteen yard box, and he would've had a hatrick if he hadn't skied another chance across the face of a completely open goal.
It's neither here nor there. When I used to coach him as a six year old, he scored his first goal and as his dad my reflex action was to jump for joy but instead as his coach I yelled GREAT PASS DANIEL to the kid that accidentally set him up before he accidentally scored.
I watched my kid today, a sweeper, marshall his defence like a nazi, and have the nuance to push forward when the chance arose and put two in against a pretty shitty opponent.
Who fucking cares. They're under elevens.
But with 5 minutes to go, he pushed a ball to his centre-half (who is a gun), ran off him, turned onto the pass, skipped down the wing, looked up (which floored me because we're always having that conversation on the way to the game in the car - "LOOK before you pass - you're not good enough to use brainwaves yet"), and sent a hooked pass into the 6 yard box three of his team-mates nearly knocked each other out on sticking it into the back of the onion bag. It made me feel quite pleasant. fuck the goals he'd scored THIS was awesome, I watched his team-mates say motherfucker THAT was a ridiculously good cross, and it left me feeling pleasant. like the author of this post.
