After years of mismanagement and security breaches, operations at Arkham Asylum have been suspended indefinitely. Originally used as a state psychiatric hospital, Arkham was renovated to house the criminally insane. Notable Arkham inmates includ Harvey Dent aka "Two Face", Edward Nigma aka "Riddler", and Pamela Isley aka "Poison Ivy". Perhaps its most well known and most troublesome inmate was known only as "Joker".
Despite being modified with enhanced security measures and inmate specific cells to neutralize the abilities of certain individuals, the safety of the institution was called into questions numerous times. Escapes were quite common. It is thought that inmates escaping from Arkham Asylum and reoffending in the surrounding areas, Gotham City in particular, have caused damages estimated in the billions of dollars and have also resulted in over 1200 deaths.
Grants from organizations such as the Wayne Foundation were its only funding during its final years of operations due to the institutions inability to keep prisoners within its walls and out of the surrounding communities. State and federal monies were not available to fund its operation due to the constant problems occurring there and its inability to meet accreditation standards. With the passing of Bruce Wayne last year due to a massive heart attack and the restructuring of Wayne Enterprises that followed his death, grants to fund operations at Arkham Asylum are no longer provided.
Many of the individuals held at Arkham Asylum were apprehended by the legendary figure known as "Batman". Today also marks the one year anniversary since the last recorded "Batman" sighting.
Inmates previously held at Arkham have been transferred to other institutions where they will be either executed or raped. Some will recieve both but the order in which those punishments will be administered is still being considered
