Why does an extended primary hurt the democrats? (1361 hits)

People keep saying that this protracted nomination fight is hurting the Dems.

I just don't get it. From everything I can see, it's actually been terribly beneficial.

First of all, the democrats get 98% of all the news coverage. People have been treating this primary, from a news perspective, like it is a general election. John McCain rarely even makes the news at this point, except when there's some sort of gaffe or general political question mark like him taking public funding.

Secondly, in every state the Democrats are adding hundreds of thousands of voters to the rolls. Now, I know there are a few "Limbaughites" who voted Dem for shits and giggles, but that's not what I'm talking about. I mean literally hundreds of thousands of people registering as democrats across the board. That could be enough to tip some states and could make a difference in the electoral college.

Finally, Obama, the likely winner, is getting vetted by Hillary Clinton. Frankly, I wouldn't want Obama to have cruised through the primaries with no resistance, because he *was* something of an untested politician on the national scale. Now, we're getting to see how he reacts to Swift Boatesque attacks, how he reacts to controversies, and so on, *before* he has secured the nomination.

Where's the problem here? Do you really think that the Democrats will feel so "fractured" that they will stay at home and let the Republicans have another four years in the white house? Somehow I have a hard time believing that, just as I have a hard time that ultraconservatives won't come out and vote for McCain, because their other choice will likely be Obama.

The choir are not going to be affected by the extra exposure - people who enjoy what it is they are putting down will continue to support them even if they find the back and forth boring and redundant.

Republicans and undecided voters will inevitably tire of the additional coverage and continue to tune out the democratic rhetoric. This allows the focussed, simplistic, and easy-to-digest messaging of the Republican machine to work it's magic and the same bullshit cycles itself again and again.

PS - Vote Obama motherfuckers.

Obama and Clinton are letting their ego's take precedence over the good of the party and what they see as the good of the country.

it behooves hillary to blow up the democratic party because it's the only way for her to get the nomination and even if she fails it may weaken obama and help mccain get elected, which is what she wants if obama is the nominee

running against a 76 year year old mccain (or his vp) in 4 years is a lot better than the other scenarios, i.e., running against an incumbent of her own party (pres obama) or waiting until 2016 when she will be 68 years old

Well then tell me how you're discriminated against. Are you? Where? What happened?
-----
In addition to the example I gave in my comment, I can give you several more that have occured to me personally. Note: as with all things, these things all turned out for the best so I am not angry about them; only mindful that they occured...

-Was not hired out of college by Kimberly Clark when they hired several women who were significantly less qualified than was I (grades, overall and related work experience, etc). This is because of that companies' openly stated sexist policy of hiring a disproportionate (compared to the graduating percentages by gender) number of female Engineers.
-Have been told on more than one occassion that I moved upward through the ranks of the places where I work faster than other people because I am a white male despite my being personable, capable, and able to prove and demonstrate my value to the companies employeeing me. Those making these statements were all women whose work was marginal at best.
-Was told by the leadership of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) that I could not assist with a college project they were sponsoring because thay wanted only women working on it, despite that I had experience in the very technology they were using, owned the tools they would need co construct the project, and was an active member of SWE at the time (and no, I didn't join SWE to meet smart chicks).
-Have been told that the vandalism done to my car shouldn't bother me because I'm a rich white guy (words offered by the old black guy working security at the lot my car was parked in when it was vandalized)

I've got more. To be fair, I should say that MLW is an Engineer and she works in an office of mostly men over 55 years old. I her her saying whay you're saying and, again, I don't doubt it occurs. Believe it or not, it occurs to white males, too.
=======

Every kind of prejudice is unfortunate, but I think the relative scale of how severely one is actually affected by it is totally different for us white males.

If you don't like being 'kept down by the white man' where you work, use your minority status to get a preferred-rate govenment-backed small business loan and start your own company. I would consider doing that same thing, but as a white male I'm just not eligible for such preferential treatment.
=====

From the many comments you've made about the very nice things that you own (not here, but I definitely recall seeing a decent number of them), something tells me that you simply do not need such preferential treatment.

I don't claim to know, but I would imagine that there is some kind of low income requirement (similar to affordable housing), and that it isn't strictly based on race, anyway.

Thanks for answering my question, skrap. I know that educational institutions are pretty bad when it comes to the equal opportunity thing. I've heard a lot of complaints about their hiring practices.

You're telling me not to blame men for things but men often blame things on women. The sex comment was an example of that type of thinking. """

>> So you're defending yourself by using fucktards as an example? Good thinking.

If you're trying to say that I'm a victim, or that I'm victimizing myself, you're incorrect. I have actual incidents where I'm drawing my opinion from. It's not things I read, it's not things I heard about, it's actual things that happened to me."""

>> Unfair things to anyone. You don't need to be a woman for them to happen. If it wouldn't be that, it would be something else. I don't see how your anecdotes gives you any right to say that white males have a free pass.

I didn't even realize that sexism was still prevalent in the workplace until about 3 years ago when I got promoted and sorry to say, had to work with white men. All of my bosses up until that point were female so I never had this issue until then."""

>>  Isn't it ironic? "All of my bosses were female..." Doesn't sound like afghanistan to me. Truth is, there are idiots everywhere. It doesn't have anything to do with white men in particular. in fact, if those idiots had certain religious backgrounds we all know, rest assure their dumbassery would've been exponential.

It has nothing to do with reason for me. It has to do with cold, hard facts that people still don't want to accept. It's not a perversion of my mind or anything of the sort. I'm pretty sure that when you tell a man that you have a problem with an assignment he's given you and he suggests that you only feel that way because you have your period, I would say that's being pretty fucking blatant."""

>> I had insecure women get pissed at me because they thought I was an "arrogant pretty boy" just because I'm relatively shy and ignored them. OMG! SEXISM! I had old fucktards say "I was too young to understand". OMG! AGISM! I've had anglophones snicker at my accent in english-speaking meetings! OMG! LANGUISM! Some people were told about my salary and bickered over it. OMFG! CLASSISM! RELIGIONISM! I've even seen co-workers get really pissed because I came from another city (no less) OH DEAR! CITY-ISM! Some guy openly hates me because I've corrected it him on a few facts he had wrong about things in general! OBSCURANTISM! Some guys I work with think I'm stupid because I go to the gym...THE LIST GOES ON!

Point is, stop acting like your gender gives you a special capital of sympathy and that we white males have it easy. There's always someone to judge you based on anything.

'feminism' is just anoter subcategory of humanism.

it's really quite useless now in western society. pretty much every male that isn't a neanderthal or woman that isn't a submissive idiot is a feminist by defenition. problem is that its meaning gets twisted and it has becomes a vector for attacks on another group, males in this occurence.

mysandry is as rampant as misogyny nowadays.

most of these debates pretty much boil down to little boys and girls attacking each others because they've been hurt at some point.

some white males are discriminated against simply because they are white males...mostly by angry women, like you.

others are discriminated against because they fat, ugly, have a big nose, are ginger...some will even get discriminated against because they look good, are rich and have success.

You know, I didn't identify with being a feminist for a long time, just because of the stereotype that it's a lot of women wielding knives and broken coke bottles looking for a man to castrate. It's not really like that...it's more of...women should have the same opportunities that men do. If anything, it's made me more aware of a subtler sexism that still permeates our society.

I don't view other women as my sisters, nor do I attend Lilith Fair concerts, nor do I hate men.

I'm absolutely with you in principle, it's the label only that I tend to distance myself from for the same reason. I get the same discriminatory comments simply because I'm a huge Tori Amos fan. Because I often point out subtler examples of sexism or make it a topic of conversation, sometimes it's assumed that I'm overly sensitive or a man hater. That's ridiculous.

Pentameter, I e-like you and I do not doubt you've had to put up with sexism but your "...everyone who isn't a white male..." comment is ignorant. It is understandably so, because white males don't make a lot of noise about suffering discrimination so you wouldn't know it goes on. But it does. I'm tired of taking the blame for attitudes that may have been prevalent before I was born.

If you don't like being 'kept down by the white man' where you work, use your minority status to get a preferred-rate govenment-backed small business loan and start your own company. I would consider doing that same thing, but as a white male I'm just not eligible for such preferential treatment.

VERY well said, Pent.

I don't identify as a feminist per se, but what you said about sexism is absolutely true.

We didn't expect Obama to win PA, but it was closer than many thought it would be, and I'm proud to say he won my county, if only by 2 points.

----------------

You know, I didn't identify with being a feminist for a long time, just because of the stereotype that it's a lot of women wielding knives and broken coke bottles looking for a man to castrate. It's not really like that...it's more of...women should have the same opportunities that men do. If anything, it's made me more aware of a subtler sexism that still permeates our society.

I don't view other women as my sisters, nor do I attend Lilith Fair concerts, nor do I hate men.

Take a look at the two Democratic candidates. They both represent the two angriest factions in their Party: the feminists and the urban blacks. One of those groups will be soon alienated, and there will be fallout.

-------------------

Hillary Clinton actually does poorly amongst young, women feminist voters. I don't think that the Democratic party is split the way you think it is. I didn't vote for Hillary and I consider myself a feminist. She's more popular amongst middle-aged women voters because they identify with her - they too grew up in a time when women were still being told the only things they were good for were babies and making pies. They went out into a white male dominated workforce and put up with a lot of shit to be there. Even though my generation still has to put up with a lot of sexist shit, we don't have it nearly as hard as they did.

I don't identify with her. I view her as a complete pushover, a woman whose husband has betrayed her multiple times, a woman who threw herself away for a man. I view her as John McCain with a vagina. I view her as a liar. And even though I don't like her, I do believe that the media presented her in a very sexist way, pointing out her "cackle" laugh, scrutinizing her clothing choices and a myriad of other things.

And that's a load of bullshit.

If any American believes that sexism and racism aren't issues, they're absolutely blind. I deal with sexism every day at work, and I'm sure any person who isn't a white male will say they're discriminated against in some way, whether for their sex or their race.

The bottom line is that Obama stands for something appealing, and that thing is change. It's the idea that we need to stop doing things the same old way with the same old people. We need new blood, new ideas and a new outlook that's focused on us instead of the rest of the world. I think Obama would be a great representative for the United States as opposed to the same people, different names.

Not everyone who goes to the polls has a chip on their shoulder or a grudge. Not every voter has an agenda. And not every voter can be pigeonholed and stuffed under a label.

I think saying that this gives Republicans more "time to prepare" is wrong because a semi-final between Clinton and Obama is better preparation than whatever it is the Republicans are doing waiting for the winner.

This isn't hockey. It's not as though going to game seven is going to make Obama or Clinton tired when they play the next round.

Although that would probably make McCain too tired to run, his being one thousand and all, but that's besides the point.

Also, while bashing feminists is all fine and good (they're an ideological group), bashing "urban blacks" is bashing a group defined by race and geography. Not fair.

Here's why:

1) Obama & Clinton are going to spend millions and millions to bloody each other in the next month or two. The more they spend, the less they have in the bank come October.

2) The way that the mainstream media is attacking a Democrat, whether the media outlet be for Obama or Clinton is glorious. The media only typically attacks Republicans. One of them are going to lose, and that media source that is on the losing side is going to be shitlisted.

3) There is an actual Republican strategy to encourage voters of either party to vote for the weaker Democrat candidate. Frankly, I don't get it, but...maybe, the best way for the Republicans to succeed is to let the Democrats put their money where their mouth is.

4) There are actual Republicans who crossed over and have gotten themselves elected as delegates to the DNC. These people are intending on causing havoc in Denver.

5) Take a look at the two Democratic candidates. They both represent the two angriest factions in their Party: the feminists and the urban blacks. One of those groups will be soon alienated, and there will be fallout.

Dems get the vast majority of media coverage in the US regardless of the timing of the primaries - it's a liberal press in the US and there's no disguising it. Both Obama and Clinton *are* untested politicians. Together they have less than seven years actual national political office experience. It may be worth noting that the current President has more time as President than that.
I've said before that I wouldn't want brain surgery performed on me by a completely inexperienced surgeon or by someone who was simply married to an experienced surgeon, and the office of President rates higher in Number of People Affected by Fuckups than does that of Doctor.

Dems are keeping themselves in the spotlight as usual. They are registering more voters as the primaries drag on but if the Dems expect to win the Presidency, Obama and Clinton must be on the same ticket. To have one running as an independant will split the vote too deeply. So, they will be faced with the decision: Obama/Clinton or Clinton/Obama. And some voting Americans who haven't made themselves fully aware of the candidate selection process will read the results of that decision to reflect whether the Dems consider the white woman subordinate to the black man or vice versa. It may piss a few people off.

As a registered Republican, I am watching the Dem primaries with great interest.

It's tearing the democratic party in half, that's what it's doing; instead of working together, they're fighting amongst themselves, distracting them from doing what they SHOULD be doing, which is preparing to back whoever wins to go head to head with McCain. This gives the Republicans a distinct advantage in this whole situation by giving them plenty of time to prepare for the election, that's what's wrong with it. When the time comes, there's going to be so much infighting and animosity between Democrats because of this shit, that McCain is going to steal this election.
