Perhaps at 30, I'm now just too old to "get it."
Perhaps I missed the memo about this particular sub-culture.
Perhaps they were just a bunch of assholes...
Let me explain.
I've been working at a local bar now since October. It's a live music venue on the weekends that sports karaoke and a music-based open mic night during the week. I'm employed there as a door guy/bouncer and part of my particular duties is to deal with the bands. I go over load-in procedures with them, set times and paperwork.
Paperwork that they sign. Paperwork that says that they will not promote moshing.
In all the time that I've been here, I've never had to throw anyone out. We never had to worry about cutting a show off. We DEFINITELY have never had to worry about calling the police. Last night the first two occurred. And what form of vicious thugs were at the heart of this?
Straight Edge kids.
What???
In case you are unaware, these are young people (that as far as I know) abstain from just about everything. The fact that they were playing in a bar I found slightly hypocritical, but maybe they were trying to make a statement. Big black X's are marked on their hands, some even wearing clothing proudly proclaiming them "Straight Edge."
Anyhow, after the first two bands played, (2 nice young punk bands from Chicago) these local guys take the stage. They've already been causing various problems throughout the night and now proceed to mosh as violently as possible. I tried to stop it, but one kid absolutely refused. I think he was pissed 'cause we had already thrown his buddy out. I go to haul him away and the fucking singer tries to tackle both of us. Sound off, lights on. Band didn't even make it through their first song.
So now the staff is lined up, telling the band and their little crew to get out. They're screaming all kinds of nonsense; stuff about the youth of America, us being Nazis, something about the evils of alcohol, I dunno. We get them out, but they're creeping around outside, obviously waiting for my manager and I. Whatever. Of course, when the 5' 2" female bartender walks outside and sees two of them sitting on the back of her car, she freaks the fuck out and starts screaming. That pretty much scattered them.
Now, I've worked thugged-out Hip Hop show. I've worked Death Metal shows and Hard Core shows. Never a problem. This was my first experience with the Straight Edge youth culture. So, for any Uberites out there, particularly the ones younger than me... is this normal for these kids? Are the "Abstainers" the new Angry Ones, or where these just a random bunch of assholes???

I can't imagine why you'd want to stop punks from violently "moshing" (we used to call it "slam-dancing") at a punk show, or why anyone who puts on or attends a punk show would be surprised by this activity. Be prepared and educate yourselves. Bolt the furniture down (if you must have any), don't serve drinks in glass containers, and if you don't want to dance, stay the fuck out of the way.
It's not all macho tough guy bullshit, either--check out bands like the Riverboat Gamblers, for example. (Far from straight-edge, btw.)They look like a bunch of skinny faggot college kids, but their live shows are like a violent ballet; they are kinetic energy personified. From the second they begin playing, there isn't a moment when the air isn't filled with flying beer, bottles, bodies, microphones, chairs, and instruments. They are constantly hurting themselves and each other with their antics: they stand on things that aren't meant to be stood on and fall; they knock each other's teeth out with swinging microphones. It's beautiful, and they are beautiful. I'd love to watch one of their live shows in slow-motion.

Sounds like a group of ultra self-righteous punks who think they are better than everyone because they dont submit to the "evils" of drinking and having sex. Most people who are edge and have a maturity level above that of a 6th grader tend to be pretty nice.
The new youth who has no idea what it really meant to be edge back in the day are retards. They should all be sterilized.

I'm pretty sure they did, though it was some under-age band that 'invented' the X thing and there's been sXe ideas around since the 70's or some shit. All I know is that the best band to come out of that shitty movement it without a doubt 'Jud Jud'.

I played guitar in a band in high school, way back in the mid-60s. We did OK, but weren't even good enough to get out of the home town. Shlongy did something cool, and you guys didn't.

Straight Edge goes back at least to the 80's maybe even into the 70's punk scene.
Straight Edge kids eschewed alcohol, sex, drugs, etc... mainly to differentiate themselves from the "thug" punks who were usually fucked up on something and trashed stuff.
Basically you have two extremes:
Neo-Nazi Skins at one end and the Straight Edge kids on the other.
Basically SE kids are like the carebears of the punk music genre, those little douchenozzle probably thought they were being cool, and probably told all their fanboy friends about how the nazi's kicked them out of the club.
It makes them feel like they are cool or something.

The 'straight edge' variety of American youth has been around at least since I was a teenager. I remember wondering how it was that these kids could abstain from everything and STILL consider themselves over-the-top.

Hmm..I'm older than you, kaos, and I remember the straight edge movement from high school. I think it had roots in 80s punk, as odd as that sounds. They believe in abstaining from drugs, alcohol, casual sex, among other things sometimes, but they definitely don't abstain from sharing sometimes militant opinions. Every subculture has it's posers, so who's to say whether the ones you encountered were or not.
