The 'idea', as it exists at this moment, is to create a showcase site that would stand on it's own as a solid daily source of high quality entertainment that will leverage classic posts from some of Uber's most talented contributers, inspire new awesome posts through financial incentive, generate funny and fucked content, and ultimately serve as a gateway site to the goodness that we all know and love as Ubersite.
http://www.ubersite.com/m/116408 - "Hey Uber" - serves as manic, disorganized introduction to the magazine concept as I barfed it out of my brain. Feel free to slog though that for more information but realize that nothing is solidified yet - I am open to suggestions and this is very much a work in progress.
The key to all of this still rests with Bart. The dude didn't bother to stop by the other post - he might very well ignore this one too. We'll see.
I did have some great discussion on the previous post and I would like to thank everyone who stopped in to express their thoughts on the idea already - but I would love to hear from more people on the subject.
What some of you are already thinking:
HurtByTheSun - Doesn't think it will work, but thinks the idea is cool.
MudWhistle/BAMF - has better things to do with his life and feels that not enough creative and motivated people care any more for this to work.
orphelia - thinks I should go to bed earlier.
Indoninja - even though he can't be bothered to understand the idea - he still thinks it sucks, that I suck, and I'm pretty sure he crapped his pants at least twice trying to explain that to me.
Shlongy - would like me to STFU... I am well aware he is not alone.
Method - thought this was a good idea too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1230Xpkm-_0&feature=related
Apollo88 - Is of the opinion that all of this has been suggested before, that I am a uber-nobody and there are no interesting people left on this website.
Scourge - is already working on his first article.
Crystle - wouldn't be in any way interested in a "magazine" version - but I figured she should probably make the list.
Icarus1987- thinks the idea has merit, had some great suggestions and offered to help.
Badlands - feels that ubersite should file for some kind of restraining order against me - but after some discussion also feels the idea is decent and might just work (but probably not).
Anansie - felt that 2004-05 ubersite probably would have been into this - which is coincidentally when she wrote: http://www.ubersite.com/m/37177#625178
iddqd - is understandably skeptical, but is interested in participating
JMG114 - feels that if someone is actually able to launch this idea he would be on board.
Quint - wants to start a magazine where all the guys who have fucked Method's Mom in the past month would get to write a page long article. (I think this could easily be a feature of the new site)
Genko - is in.
What about the rest of you?
Ideas? Thoughts? Suggestions? Problems? Complaints?
I'll see you below.

I think I glanced at it. The idea of a magazine has been thrown around a few years ago, actually at an Ubercon after masturbating on each others' faces.
Once I unloaded on Method's mom, I realized that I'd be up for it myself, as long as all the legalities and the process was all figured out for me.

SO - I have refined the idea.
It will be a completely separate site - my initial vision of somehow Frankensteining them together in a larger symbiotic fashion just won't work - there are simply too many shits floatin' in the pool.
Thanks to all those folks who made an effort to give some constructive feedback... I will contact the people who have expressed interest in helping and/or contributing when I have something a little more tangible in place.

He Rob,
The idea ain't bad at all, most ideas ain't bad. The execution of them most times is bad.
What is holding you back setting up a thing of your own on your own?
All Über is is a place where you meet people like in everyday life and I have the feeling you do well in what you do in everyday life.
Or in Nike's words: just do it!

I've been thinking about this all day can't really come up with any reason why not.

Yeah, I don't see anything like this working unless it's completely automated and it's completely a part of the original Ubersite. I tried a few things like this years ago and they didn't pan out. That's not to say they couldn't, I just don't see it happening without significant work from Mr. Cilfone.

Uber needs help and everyone knows it.

This has been addressed before in regard to music, novel or novella length stories, and other media. It'll never happen, but we definitely need to give uber some kind of a boost.
I'd like to be able to post more than 3MB of video or sound, but I'm not sure what Bart's costs are like. Hell, we could have a whole ubermovie section if that happened.

It seemed like a good idea at the time.
It probably still is.
I think it requires far too much participation, really.
It boggles our simple little minds. We must feed the collective. Rent is due, payments must get made - starvation is something that is easily ignored. I think our governments should be held accountable.
Publically. I think our way of government should be completely re-hauled. Scrapped, worked up from scratch.
I think that idea was a public website that broadcast a 'daily show' type show every day following the stupidity that goes on every single day throughout humanity... and makes sure those indiscretions are held accountable.
Simple. Project accountability. I should read that again... pardon me.

Rob, Robby, Robster, Bobby,
Didn't you start out telling peeps, nerds and other Canadians on this site how much you loved Über?
Enjoy what it is for what it is and leave it that way but if you want to set summin' up by yourself please do so. By yourself.
I'm sure you can do better than draining this website when you're setting up something on your own.
I bet you can make people join your own site, hell I know I would at least have a look at it or try to get the creative people I know to post on it.
I admire your attitude and your creativity but if you want to make something out of it webwise you'll have to be as smart as Bart was some e-years ago and do it yourself.
Best regards, Cordialement

This isn't a bad idea for talented people who'd like to make some money from their creations. But like Bart said, the bottom line is: How do you draw traffic to the site? Traffic is the only way these people are going to make a dime. (Advertisers don't pay people to let them set up camp on some outpost of humanity.)
Wait, I know! How about setting up all the camwhorey chicks around here with their own webcams? What the hell, the guys, too! Then your magazine could have cam portals that lead directly into Hidden's computer room, Oathy's gym/cell, or Orphelia's nursery/dungeon! Pervs would pay hand over fist for that shit, and some attention-starved but photogenic people would get the attention they so desperately crave. Think about it.

I don't like it. How will content for your E-zine be selected? If by editor's discretion, then how will it be any different from all the other E-zines already out there? If by fellow users, then it will likely degenerate into another uber contest with a monetary incentive to cheat. Take away the monetary incentive and you get what we have here today, a reviewer driven filtering process: the "best" posts linger on the front page while the "worst" posts disappear.
What you're really saying is that you don't agree with the ratings given to certain posts, that you know better than the reviewers what's good and what's bad. You snooty bastard.

You know, rob, i know you think that getting together with your little clique of Caulaincunt and Phagnum and ripping on me all the time is somehow hurting me, but the truth is, i love it!
You and your pathetic posse of cyber bullies think you get me down, but the truth is this ubersite thing is just one microsecond in a life that is otherwise a big awesome cake with awesome topping on it.
Also, the fact that you took the time out of YOUR life to write that review while i just continued doing what i do, which is working as the extremely successful creative assistant of a small creative company, means that i win even more! I'm that awesome.
So, you and your ring of allies can call me all the names under the sun but if you think it breaks through my massive wall of awesome you are very mistaken.
In fact, almost the opposite! I love coming on here to share in the collective idiocy that is ubersite. This microcosmic community of jackasses, pseudo-intellectuals and genuinely nice and funny people wouldn't be what it is without the collective idiocy of people like you.
I love to think of you, hunched over your little computer in wherever it is you live while i spent most of my day working as the creative director of a large creative company and hanging out with loads of friends.
You see, Ubersite is only a tiny part of my day. I actually have a lot of friends and just enjoy coming on here now and again, for about 2 minutes at a time when i have time off being the creative CEO of a massive, international multi-milllion dollar creative company.
You see, ubersite is not that important to me, but i love the collective idiocy of this group of outcasts, cool cats and people i can genuinely call my friends so, as you sit around pondering for hours what angry little message you're going to write to me next, i just sit back in my castle of awesome, coming on uber about 30 seconds a week and taking in all the attention that you lavish on me.
Oh, so you call me an attention whore, but aren't you a little guilty of that too, rob? In fact, aren't we all? When you see my next plan for "Uberbook", a social networking site based on uber that i've already proposed to bart in my capacity of God of the worlds largest ever creative corporation, i think you'll see that trolls like you just provide material for me and all my successful uber friends to sit back and laugh at while we chew awesome gum in Awesomeville.
So, while you think you are upsetting me, i actually love it when i log on once every 6 months for 5 seconds at a time and see all the attention.
So, to you, Caul, Sphagnum, and all the other haters. Thankyou!
And to the rest of Uber:
<3
Of course. :)

One feature you could integrate would be to give various users their own themed "sections" of the magazine; i.e. "Loki's blogspot", "Simon's crappy Animated GIF of the day" etc. You could also add a script that would prune sections that are not being updated regularly, so if a user doesn't add anything for 4-6 months their section would be removed from the front page and possibly bart's hard drive.

Seems to me that this would go over a hell of a lot better, IF:
You just create your own magazine site, call it whatever you want (especially a name without "Uber" in it), THEN approach people for certain posts to see if they would be willing to let you use them. At that point, the details would need to be hammered out (who retains copyrights, how much $$ or % of advertising for each post, residuals or whatever), but then at least you're doing the work and they just have to agree or not.
Because the way you're approaching it now-- making a vague appeal to anonymous internet people for help and ideas-- just isn't effective.
We will continue to work on our own creative efforts, maybe post them on Uber or not, and you can do your own thing. If that meshes up at all in a magazine idea *on your end*, then do it. Get some people who are really on board to help you out.
Keep in mind that it's difficult for us to trust you (and vice versa), especially when $$ is involved.
( c o l e s l a w )
PS- Name suggestion. "HEAT: The Magazine." The .com name is available, I just checked.
---
Mr. Murphy,
Thanks for your comment - I agree this would probably go over much better as you have suggested, and in the end that might very well be what happens.
Right now I think the idea is stronger when leveraging the whole of Uber... and creating a symbiotic sub-site (or section) would strengthen the experience and in the end create a more dynamic entity.
I specialize in vague appeals to anonymous internet strangers - and I can't really do anything to bolster the confidence of a group of people who should be leery when money and ubersite is involved.
I can only give people my word and hope that a close examination of my participation around here will prove me to be someone who is trustworthy enough to roll the dice with.

I like what Bart suggested -- if you're going to do this, and to keep it integrated with uber, you want it integrate as seamlessly as possible; ie you want the same look/feel/navigation, just a different section. You also want to keep effort to a minimum -- otherwise it will sputter out for lack of primary momentum.

Cool - the reason I suggest a separate site is that it will open itself up to brand new marketing possibilities. Other content providers out there would be hesitant to link directly to Ubersite proper because of the random and questionable content that could fill the front page at any given time.
The money making potential of this idea is through advertising - Ubersite would lose it's appeal if there was a bunch of multimedia and high-end advertising going on BUT if the sub-section of Uber is able to handle and integrate those element of advertising that will appeal to the media buyers then giddy up.
I see this venture as being something that is updated daily and would require at least a core group of dedicated, interested people to maintain the content and organize the contributers. It would be like a job for those people and they would most certainly get paid for their efforts.
Yes, because the copyright is held by the original authors - the next big step will be to get those key uber-users to make their content available to the new site (or subsection) as it operates as a sanitized "showroom" - but if people still wanted to comment that would still be done in the main Ubersite.
I see what you are saying as far as not wanting to dilute the name - but this could be viewed as an opportunity to expand the Uber brand - and create a tangible entity that could potentially be a money maker for you and the participating contributers.

So where to begin...
Yes, I think the idea is great. Similar things have been suggested before and will keep being suggested until something is put in place.
I don't know that I would host it under a different domain since that would dilute the name. To clarify, anyone could setup UberTheMagazine.com and run whatever they wanted there without infringing on anyone's rights. I own a registered trademark on "UBERSITE", but not all things "UBER" since that's just a plain old word.
All the material on the site is copyrighted by its respective copyright holder, dumbass, so nobody - not me, not Rob, not Steve Jobs - can legally reproduce any of the posted material without permission. The only right that I've asserted is the right to reproduce the material in the context of Ubersite which makes moral and legal sense since people knowingly and voluntarily submit their stuff to the site in the first place.
The core goal of Ubersite from the "About Us" page is to promote the best submitted material to the readers. Since I'm a tech minded person, I do that through mostly technical means like calculating ratings, hits, etc. Plus, I have Bored at Work which I used to editorially select a bunch of things on Ubersite and other sites that I like because they are funny or interesting. There's no grand conspiracy here and the basic technology at work hasn't changed in 9 years.
As far as the democratic process, I'm only dedicated to the democratic nature of the site so long as it is the best way to make the site good. I believe in democracy, but it has its flaws (see: George W. Bush, reality TV, Britney Spears). I'm not opposed to other methods of selecting material and have been planning on building in something like a "rate a user" feature that would allow you to custom tailor the list of messages on the home page based on the users you like, what they like, and so on.
Editorial selections like a magazine are great, but they require a lot of ongoing work. People have to submit things, filter through things, organize those things on the website, add features to the site to support all that, make it look good, and promote it to the rest of the world. On top of that, the notion of just putting an ad on the page and making a lot of money is a fantasy and the site would require a ton of traffic to be able to generate enough money if anyone expects to get paid. Anything else like donations or subscriptions is a very tough sell.
All that said, I think the easiest way to operate it would be as a separate section of the existing Ubersite. Anything to make it a little more respectably closed off (no "-2 needs more tits" comments) could be added in as special feature similar to the way UberMadness! posts have their own special treatment. The most important thing from my perspective to make it work now and for any length of time is to make it require very little regular work from everyone involved. If it requires too much ongoing work, the whole thing will fall apart as soon as someone gets a little busy at their job.

I mean Bart has no real incentive to engage in this discussion yet - what am I really bringing to the table beside a wild idea, a url and a pretty luke-warm reaction from the masses.
Besides, if this idea has been bandied around for ages he probably isn't in any mood to get his hopes up.

---
I don't know why you gotta be like that bean - but you do what you gotta do.
I didn't respond to your last comment because I didn't agree with it - you seem to think I am 'desperate' - but in truth I am just excited.
This is 'just' an idea - and in my opinion a good one but it needs work and participation from the group. I have certainly given it a lot of thought, but far more thought needs to be had and I had hoped (still hope) that the more reasonable, talented, creative, fucked up, weird and wonderful contributers to this site will see some value in displaying their best work and help with the brainstorming and continue to give their input.
I use the term 'just an idea' to help manage my own expectations. Of course I want it to work - and I truly think it has potential, but given the very nature of this site - dare I say the reaction YOU had to this idea - it is very obvious why this idea has failed in the past.
It's never fun to get shit on... but when I look at some of the assholes who are dropping their load, I can't really get too upset.
Some are certainly surprising and disappointing - but what can I do?
Still, I'll keep pushing because I am encouraged by some of the responses I have gotten so far.

This is a good point - but in simplest terms there really wouldn't need to be much more effort on your part besides green-lighting your best material to be showcased.
The option to create more will be on you - and no other pressure will be needed.

A good point was also brought up off-line - as this does scream of elitism there are lots of people who will object to this idea based on the simple notion they will not be invited to participate, and why should they be happy to see other people making money.
To attempt to answer some of the negative criticisms fielded in this post:
Ubersite will remain the same old swamppy pit of goodness we all know and love... until Bart pulls the plug.
Uber:The Magazine will not be a pay site - but if things go well, all money made through advertising will be distributed in a fair, transparent manner to the contributers of the site.
Participation is as easy as migrating your best work over to the new site. No extra work will be required or needed. The added incentive to write or be creative will exist through the potential of reward - and also having a 'sanitized' portal that will be devoid of all the bullshit that you see below. Authors and artists will be able to post new pieces of fiction and if those new works see heavy traffic then they will get the extra reward of money for their creations.
Any new posts to Uber:The Magazine will also be posted on Ubersite - subject to the hyenas and jackasses that derive such pleasure ripping things apart - there will be no commenting directly on the magazine site - but there will be a link to the comments that will exist on Ubersite. (This is what will create more traffic to the site and hopefully encourage more quality sign ups.)
In the end, it is the integration of both sites that will make this successful. I can go ahead and start any number of sites, but due to my enjoyment of this particular one I think I have come up with an idea that will, in fact, make me and some other talented folks some money for fucking around on Ubersite.
Thanks again for all of your input.
