I always thought "jackoff" was two words when used in this sense. Kind of like "Fuck off." It wouldn't sound right to say, "Fuckoff and die." The single word, "jackoff," seems more like a noun: "The boss's son-in-law is a jackoff."

It depends. I think jack off is a phrasal verb, whereas "jackoff" is a noun referring to somebody who is a jackoff.
