I've asked you juvenile morons all kinds of questions and have almost never got a useful answer, but surely this is a topic where you can actually help
i want to buy an mp3 player (i believe that is what the little gadgets that store and play music are called) that can store a couple of hundred songs and play them with reasonable sound quality. it should also be able to arrange the songs into groups.
i don't want to watch videos or store millions of songs. i don't require stunning sound quality. i don't require a fashionable brand.
i do want to be able to access songs easily, and arrange them into playlists
i do want it to be as cheap as possible.
i'm assuming such a simple gadget should be available for less than 50 dollars. is that correct?

Get one of the older generation Creative Zen, if you can get a hold of any of the discontinued players like Micro or Neon. 8 GB, easy to use, easy to put music on.
Unless you run Vista, because for some reason the assholes over at Creative decided not to have any sort of compatible device drivers for Vista.
Assholes.
--------------------
I have a Creative and I have Vista. You can't use the software that comes with the player but you can still transfer music via Windows Media Player. It's a bit of a pain in the ass but it can be done. There is a sync option available on the newest version.
I personally love the Creative Zen that I have...I think it's a Sleek Photo. I know they're discontinued. I've had this for about 4 years and it's still ticking.

Good to know!
It's not been a huge issue because I've left all my music on my big desktop PC, which still runs XP, but when the day comes to transfer everything over to my laptop, and when I'm going to have to start using Windows Media Player, it will be a sad and hated day indeed.
I love my Creative Micro, I think it's been two years now I've had it and the only problem I've run into is that it freezes up at weird times a few times a month.

Sound quality wise - it's reasonably hard to tell the difference between uncompressed and compressed music. Particularly if most of the time you're using this in busy environments or pushing it through your car stereo. Yes you *can* spot the difference - but only in the same way that radio doesn't sound as good your own hifi setup.
---------------
Cymbals, among other things, sound terrible on a 128kbps mp3 file. FLAC is pretty much indistinguishable from WAV
---
I generally rip all mine as 160kbps Mp4 and it's really bloody hard to tell the difference.

Personally, I have gone through more cheap shitty mp3 players than I care to remember. Finally, I made a life changing decision and bought myself a nano.
I will never ever look back again. Its my favourite toy. It might be a bit expensive but its worth it. Easy to use, sort songs into playlists, looks good, what else could you want?
Don't buy a cheap mp3 player. For starters, you have to buy batteries for the little blighters. This is falso economy because they eat batteries and spit out the pieces. Spend a little more and save yourself in the long run.
No other mp3 player has the software to back it up like ipods. If not the nano, go for its cheaper little brother the shuffle.

Yeah, and I recommended a decent mp3 player I think. I just recommended it with the hope that he doesn't use a cheap mp3 player as his main way of listening to music. I have one of my own and I mostly use it to listen to stuff I download illegally.

iPod- I could only recommend this if you won't use iTunes AND completely change the OS. (http://www.rockbox.org/ for some badass programs instead of using the incredibly restrictive Apple OS that comes with your iPod.)
Zune- I could only recommend this if you have other friends who also have a zune. The only advantage over the ipod is to be able to share songs wirelessly on the go. Almost everything else iPod does better. Same as above, I recommend NOT using MS's version of iTunes (lol Marketplace).
iRiver- actually not bad all around... great software, not restrictive in any way... not as sleek as the other two and a bit bulky, but definitely easy to use.
Most commies will use an ipod because they go with the flow and can't think for themselves.
Since you can't do research on your own on the net and instead are asking here, I'm assuming you fit the bill.
Enjoy your ipod... say hi to Lenin.... IN HELL.

Stupid. Compressed music is lame. Undeniably convenient, but lame. If I ever give up CDs it will only be because I'm going back to vinyl or something better.

You can of course play apple uncompressed stuff on your ipod if you want to be snobby and have a propellor on your hat, but I wouldn't bother.
have fun

Fuck iPod.
I cannot forgive iTunes for being one of the worst methods of transfer.
All the unnessisary attachments simply aren't worth wasting your time with.
The battery life is way too short to make it worth owning. An estimated 12 hours means 12 hours without a backlight, video, the equalizer, leaving it on without interruption, changing songs manually, or temperatures above freezing. If you use those, expect it to be cut in half.
The wheel controls everything. If I bump the wheel by accident, the volume jumps to the maximum. Thanks, iPod, now I'm deaf.
I won't actually provide you with an answer, because I buy things that won't suck in two weeks.

the shuffle is not free.
get an ipod. you won't regret it. i work in big box retail and i can tell you all the docks, car electronics and home theater sound equipment is all tailored to the ipod. in a year, every manufacturer of sound equipment will integrate ipod docks into their receivers. get a zune and you'll be pissed about everything going apple.
you may think that all you need it for is to listen to songs when you're mobile but after having it for a year you'll change that tune. you'll never use CDs again. don't get a nano, they're outrageously expensive. Get a 30g ipod, the normal-sized one. trust me, it's worth ever penny. And go to circuit city. they're giving you a $25 itunes card for free with the purchase of an ipod.
my 2 cents.

But I hope an mp3 player isn't going to be your primary music player. You don't have to be a real audiophile to be a little pissed at the sound quality of mp3s.

Nano, hands down. A bit expensive? Sure. But 4 gigs, small as fuck, and EASY to use.
I have my whole music collection on my Mac, I choose what to put on the nano, takes seconds to swap things around.
Trust me on the last one. I'm a computer tard. Apple makes everything easier.
