Today I read a story that nearly broke my soul
Ever sad... 'twas the tale of a man that I once knew
Apparently he was found by friends in a dirty, dingy bed
Forty empty bottles lay strewn like a halo round his head
For twenty eight days this was life and indeed, all he knew
Plates of rotting food covered in vomit
when he could no longer chew
He hadn't shaved, or showered, not even cleaned his teeth
His day was filled with wonder..
but mostly disbelief
Twenty eight days, when all he thought was "is it day or night"
So he had enough whisky
to sleep two hours a night
Barely alive, they carried him, his neighbour and his friend
His muscles had had enough and his brain
Just couldn't comprehend
Back when I knew him, a vivacious laughing fool
A little closed at times I knew
But fun and happy too
For three years we were best friends, two troubled souls together
We had some rows and many laughs
It didn't last forever
He seemed to push away the ones who cared the most
He made me cry too many times
For years he's been a ghost
I'll never forget the day I decided to move away
Unhealthy friendship as it was
I knew I couldn't stay
One night three months ago he called me, very, very drunk
Verbally abused me like he used to
I silently hung up
Now I hear that the last twenty eight days, while I was happy at home
He was lying in his own filth
Incredibly alone
Alive, I'm glad to add to you, though in a hospital bed
I don't know whether to do anything
He'll forever be in my head

Having not read the reviews, I didn't realize this was based in reality. My sympathies.
I was going to offer an anecdote given to me by my long-ago geology professor...something about those who choose to live in San Francisco and how most of us make our own beds and blah blah blah. I don't know. Best wishes.

I'm sorry for your sadness, Merlina. It's nice to see you here, though.

Well, look at the bright side. At least someone cared enough to keep bringing him whiskey for 28 days.
That's something.

I'll be honest. The only poetry that I've enjoyed on Uber is Puck's. But it is a treat to have you make an appearance.

i'll assume from the title that this is about the menstrual cycle.
~~~
actually no, its an very good old male friend of mine from years back. Its just true. It was 28 days before they broke into his house. He would've died otherwise....... I guess.
I'm sad as fuck to be honest
I'm glad I didn't read it. Who wants to read something that might make them sad?
Sorry about your friend, though. The only way I know how to deal with sadness is to have an emotional outburst, a week-long pity party, and maybe a "other things aren't as important as I thought they were" realization, which usually fades at the three week mark.
this poem is awful but if it makes you feel better you go girl
this would be better as an essay of remembrance or something
rhyming is overrated
Nobody ever leaves Uber, they just take a break.
Shame about your clinically depressed friend though.
28 days and no zombie?
A poem?
So what a loser drunk went on a bender and you think going over there or not hanging up would have helped?
The only thing that will help is a boot to the ass.
What caused him to end up like this?
His brother commited suicide when he was ten years old. He's been a troubled one all his life. And was always a big drinker. Just never thought he'd get like this.
This is terribly sad, I hope it isn't true.
But seeing you have posted has brightened my day. :)
I have gone, but I'm working from home and found out about this situation today (it is true, sadly) and felt like writing about it.
I have seen the odd comment.
No one can truly leave.
I hope it was cathartic. Chin up pretty lady :)
