I give up. I've tried so hard over the last several years to keep my head above water, to do the right thing, to be the kind of person that would make my friends glad to know me and my parents proud. But I just don't have it in me anymore. I've lived by the philosophy of do unto others. I felt certain that if I was a good enough friend, daughter, and sister, that eventually I would get it all back. But I don't.
If someone needs me, I'll drop everything for them. If there is something I can give them, it's theirs. I'll take you out to lunch if you need to get out, I'll get you drunk and lifted if you need to forget. I'll buy you something thoughtful if you need some cheering up... listen to you talk if you just need to unload, patch you up if you're broken. Is it wrong for me to hope that someday, someone will do the same for me? Be as good to me as I've been to them? Does that make the things I do selfish? It's not like I have a list that I keep... a list of what's owed in return. A list of the many ways I've done for you and helped you and kept your head above water. If anyone asked me, I doubt I could come up with many specific examples. I'm not keeping accounts. But I know that I've been there. No one that I know of can ever say that when they neeed someone, I wasn't the first to pipe up with an offer.
But when I need the same, where are all of you? When I tell you I'm hurting, that I'm close to snapping, that I just don't think I can wake up and face another day... where are you? Too busy, uninterested, so wrapped up in your own worries and issues that you can't be bothered. Throw a few tired cliches my way and hope it patches up the problem long enough to get me through until the next time you have a crisis and need some support. Knowing that I can't be happy knowing someone I care about hurts.Where are you when I ask for help? When all I want is for someone to show me they care in return? That something I've done mattered. That I'm important to you on some level. When I can't stand another minute living inside my own head with all my regrets and failures and shortcomings.
It's so rare that I actually have the nerve to turn to someone for something. I don't want to burden you with my problems. No one knows better than me how many you have, because I'm the one you tell them to. How loud do I have to call out before you realize that I'm close... this close to the edge and about to go over.
No one should have to cope with these things alone. No one should be expected to put on a happy face every day and pretend nothing is wrong when her entire life is crumbling around her. When you know it is. When you've heard the tears in my voice over the phone, and when you've watched me from the passenger seat of my car as I fight to keep my composure. So I don't break down in front of you.
How long has it been since someone held me while I cried? Since they just let me talk and get it all out? Since they set aside their own hurts and disappointments for a minute? When was the last time I refused to help you? When was the last time I told you no? When was the last time you had a need that I didn't try and fulfill?
When was the last time you did the same for me?
