I am envious of "go getters". The people who love their lives because they make the right decisions. They make decisions based on logic, not emotion. I, on the other hand, let my emotions rule my life.

Right now I'm not too happy with my life, and it's completely because I've spent the past few years making one mistake after the next. I wish I could blame my current situation on someone else, but no, it's my fault.

I guess that's a good thing because it means that I can fix things. I know what is wrong, so I can start weeding my proverbial garden. (I shouldn't say that, because I don't think there is a proverb about garden weeding in relation to fixing your life, but it sounded good so I typed it out).

Anyway, back to the go getters. I think all happy people are go getters, because they know what will make them happy and they just go ahead and follow through and do those things. My problem is that I'm so impulsive and impatient I want to be happy right now, not later. I have a hard time keeping the long term goal in sight.

If I drank less I'd have more money, better health and a better mood. But when I get home I still have the mandatory 3 beers so that they will lift my spirits right then. I dropped out of college because it seemed like all of my (loser) friends were having more fun with their awesome jobs and free weekends. I know the long term effects of my choices, but I just ignore them.

The only good thing that has came out of my impulsivity is my son. Right now he's just starting to talk, and it's amazing. It's amazing to hear his little voice say "lookit!" or "bird!". I want to cry tears of joy when I see how every little thing in life makes Soren happy. I try to picture him as a rebellious teenager, making my life hell, but I just can't. He's so perfectly sweet right now. Even when he's not being sweet, he's sweet.

The other day I was reading a book to him, and he kept pointing at a wheelbarrow in the book and saying "What? What?", and I wasn't answering him. I just wanted to see how many times he'd say "what?" before he gave up. He said it about 10 times, and then he hit me in the face. That was so freakin cute. Of course I had to say, "No hitting" and frown at him, but inside I was overjoyed just at his presence alone.

I may be spoiling him, I'm not sure.

I also keep going back to Sorens dad, which is another one of my mistakes. I know it's a mistake, yet I keep finding myself repeating it over and over. My go-getter friends rage on me about it, "Dump him and move on". They can't understand why I haven't taken action. They are action centered, and they look into the future, and they suffer in the now to benefit later.

So, in the spirit of moving on and being a happier better person, I've started acting like a go-getter. I signed up for some online classes for the fall and I kicked Sorens dad out.

Good job, moron, for doing two things that you should have done 3 years ago.

Having said all of that, the main purpose in my life right now is making Soren happy. It's easier to be a go-getter when you have a child, because the idea of "what makes me happy?" turns into "What's best?".

Single moms are the best. My favorite is the upper middle class single white moms who spent the better part of their highschool and college years as the center of attention because of their hotness. They spend a few years getting pounded by some prep/football jock only to find out after the fact that nobody wants some used up 20 something single mother. Good on you for figuring it out I guess.

I kinda straddle both of these categories, so just know that it is possible to slack off and enjoy yourself in all the day to day bullshit while putting in an assload of work on the off day. It may suck those days your going 100mph, but I can go to the beach every weekend and not once think of work, bills, etc even though they're looming over my head like everyone else's.

Pot helps too

I'm exactly the same as you, fuck the long term "best" go for what makes you happy now.

So I'm always happy right now, it's always right now, so fuck the future.

Live fast die young. I'm here for a good time not a long time. Work to live don't live to work. Live every day like it's your last and all that.

Congrats on the kiddy, but it's gonna hate you for calling it that shitty name.

One of the reasons I don't like my mum is because she kicked my dad out when I was young. Now he's rich and successful and she's had to invite the local thug to live with her so she can pay the mortgage.

All the best with that.

your main focus should be on making you happy, it's infectious and Soren will have no choice other than to be happy also. Behavior is learned, I read once that the only fear children are born with is the fear of falling and all the others they learn. Teach your kid to be happy regardless of what's going on around him....do so by showing him as much.

...because that's really the main difference between "go-getters" and your "former self." the ability to keep the momentum going once youve started something good.

some people, like you've outlined, do something that makes them happy and then stop and bask in their current happiness. "go-getters" continue doing those things and don't stop....so, like i said, keep it up!!!

+2 as I know how hard it is to kick out your kids father.
It may be the right thing to do for everyone concerned, but it doesn't make it easier.
You can switch off the love.

Some of us meander and wander from the track, but it doesn't make us any less of a person.
We all get there in the end.

--------------------------------------------------
I disagree with Yozz.

But I would say that you've misidentified the quality you seem to think you should have. I don't think it about being a "go-getter" as in being hardworking or ambitious. I think it's more about rationality, self-discipline, making intelligent choices, and a deeper understanding of cause & effect that for most only becomes clearer with age and experience.

I know a ton of highly sucessful people, including a lot of attorneys, all people you might describe as go-getters. Many of them have personal lives that could only be described as _trainwrecks_! Your problem is not necessarily a function of education or IQ so don't beat yourself up there.

On a separate note, you say you "kicked Soren's dad out." That's not good enough. Your child's father should be supporting you two financially. If he is not, that is unacceptable! You must make him.

I wish you luck in changing your life.

What inevitable? Are you saying I'm going to cave and my life is going to boommerang back to this shit?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There was this girl who used to do coding for me. Really nice girl, very intelligent, hard worker. One day she called in sick, saying she had a mental breakdown. I expressed my sympathies. Told her to take whatever time she needed, hoped she got better. The next day she didn't call in -- just never showed up. Which was fine. She showed up for a week after that, but then started missing days here and there for various excuses -- car broke down, not feeling well, hung over. It got to be a regular thing, and she missed an average of two days a week. Then one day she showed up and apologized, decided she was going to buck the trend, come in and work real hard. And she did. For five hours. Until HR showed up with a pink slip. The VP noticed she wasn't coming in regularly and thought we could axe her to show our financers that we "meant business about cost-cutting."

She saw life as a series of unrelated choices. She'd made bad choices before, but now she thought she could you could just port your helm, dump your habits, and bob's your uncle. I'm not saying it's impossible to change your course in life, because I don't believe it is. I do, however, believe you have to look at your choices as an extended trend or pattern.

I don't know what a kiwi girl is, either.

Good luck in your life changes. Remember that not everyone who seems happy actually IS happy, and go-getting isn't right for everyone. I personally have a problem going out and getting what I want because I just don't care enough to do it. A little lacking in the motivation department...but what you said at the end is very true, it's easier when you have somebody else to do something for; be it a child or partner or loved one.

Well kiwi girl, even go-getters don't always get.

I tried for the first 20 years of my life to be a "go-getter" and all I "got" was shit-work piled up on my desk, and higher expectations for the same pay.

I gave up on it for a few years, thinking maybe it was just my age, but I've been working at being a "go-getter" again for the past 5 years now, and it looks like what I'm about to "get" is unemployment if our company tanks due to steel& diesel prices.

All I'm saying is, just don't knock yourself too hard, because all the go-gettin in the world ain't worth shit if there's nothing more to be gotten.

That may very well have made no sense. If so, I apologize for my unusual lack of inspirational quotes or whatever it is that I could possibly do to make your day better.

Good on you for going back to school. I think that's always a good choice, even if you have a degree or two or three, it always seems to be a renewal of sorts, helps you gain perspective and a sense of independence and such.

I tend to focus on the negative aspects of being so emotionally driven. But you know what? Some of the best decisions I've made have been emotionally driven, and I don't regret them.

I am envious of "go getters". The people who love their lives because they make the right decisions. They make decisions based on logic, not emotion. I, on the other hand, let my emotions rule my life.

Ditto. My personal choice of foolishness is that I like to burn bridges, burn them HARD. Fuel-air bomb the fuckers.

Soren is a cool name.

There's nothing wrong with making a good decision, even if it took you forever to do it.
