I'm a critic of the Church Of Scientology (CoS) myself based on the things I've seen on the internet, read, etc etc. In the past when I've asked Scientologists to comment on the things within the CoS I find objectionable they haven't really answered, or have just denied everything.

Sorry about the length of this - but I'm interested to see what an actual Scientologist would say about this?? Maybe no one on this site is a scientoligist.

Firstly, the Fair Game policy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_Game_(Scientology).

While I'm aware that the Fair Game policy was cancelled in the 60s, according to many sources including very reliable ex-Scientologists the "cancellation" only cancelled the usage of the words "fair game" and didn't change any of the policies used. Tory Magoo, a critic of Scientology has recently been "fair gamed" and had slanderous fliers posted around her neighbourhood; many Anonymous protesters report being stalked and harassed after protests; even the classic example of fair game occurred after the "cancellation": Operation Freakout, a conspiracy uncovered by the FBI in which the Church Of Scientology attempted to frame journalist Paulette Cooper for sending bomb threats.

Is it justified, or do you think this is a valid criticism of the church?

Secondly, the Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF). I am aware that the RPF is technically "voluntary" - but if you refuse to enter the RPF you will be kicked out of the CoS, and this means no more "bridge to total freedom". Someone who refuses to enter the RPF will never be able to reach the state of "clear" or become an "Operating Thetan" - and for a faithful Scientologist, this is hardly an option.

Thirdly, the suppression of information. If you look at other religions, for example Christianity: people are allowed to know what Christianity is about before becoming a Christian. With Scientology, however, people don't hear the Xenu story or find out about body thetans until spending many years inside the CoS and paying over 15,000 dollars. Now I'm not saying that the CoS is a money-hungry, but hopefully you will be able to see why some people think it is. It certainly appears as if the CoS is treating Scientology doctrine as a product to be sold, rather than a truth that everyone must know. Why do you think the CoS does this? What does it seem like from an insider's perspective?

Finally, disconnection. While it is true everyone has the right to cease communication with someone and any church has the right to kick people out, this is not what disconnection seems to be: It appears to me as if disconnection is where the CoS actually orders people to cease communication with someone, and if they do not then they risk being kicked out of the church - and I've already explained why being kicked out is simply not an option. I personally think that a "church" should not have the power to decide who its members communicate with. Is this what disconnection actually is?

Im not defending Christianity or slating Scientology, im just genuinely interested.

Maybe its all just bollocks.

I've been reading "Dianetics" for 2 weeks now and I'm still on the "How to Read This Book" part. I found myself skipping ahead to all the "good parts" but I soon realized that this is not the kind of book one can do that with.

I just picked "dianetics" up today, it looks like it will be all kinds of fun to read.

Wow, you picked a really interesting thing to rail on. Scientology? I think I might just read this. Or... fuck, no I won't. I've already seen that South Park episode. I'm pretty sure they got the last word.

Heresy is like a tree, its roots lie in the darkness whilst its leaves wave in the sun and to those who suspect nought, it has an attractive and pleasing appearance. Truly, you can prune away its branches, or even cut the tree to the ground, but it will grow up again ever the stronger and ever more comely. Yet all awhile the root grows thick and black, gnawing at the bitter soil, drawing its nourishment from the darkness, and growing even greater and more deeply entrenched. Such is the nature of heresy, and this is why it is so hard to destroy, for it must be eradicated leaf, branch, trunk and root. It must be exorcised utterly or it will return all the stronger, time and time again, until it is too great to destroy. Then we are doomed.

Just for the fun of it, pretend youve never heard of christanity and its beliefs and think about how obscure and farfetched it sounds (divine creation, four-horsemen, blood of christ etc). Now compare how bizzare it sounds to scientology.

Scientology is like any other religion. It is no more absurd than christianity. It is no more laughable than buddhism, it is no more sad than Mormon. The only thing I see wrong with it, is that it is an "elitist" religion. If you have enough money, you can practically buy saint-hood. I don't know too much about it, All I really know is what I saw on "Nip/Tuck" and YouTube. So take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Quick Scientology fact:

L. Ron Hubbard's son was gay. He killed himself after his father tried unsuccessfully to 'rehabilitate' him using CoS techniques.

There is a CoS office right next to where I work and I swear to god, I only see MAYBE 1 or 2 people come in or leave through that door every MONTH.

The lights stay on, though...and something IS going on there after hours.

I grant Scientology no credence whatsoever. Their belief system is completely contrived and their founding father was a laughable egomaniac.

I spend a fair bit of time in St. Petersburg, FL, where the Scientology nutters apparently grow. This I know: Scientology is a cult, it's followers delusional, it's tenets false, and it's proponents liars. But at least it keeps a bunch of idiots where we can keep an eye on them.

The truth of the matter is that El Hubbardo took an awfully large amount of drugs. He was a liar, he was a thief, but damnit people believed in what he said. He's dead now, but that belief lives on!

At the heart of Scientology is the belief in mind over matter. That all the uncertainty of life can be conquered by sheer bloody mindedness. In that respect they're like any other self help organisation.

The whole thing with their mad, vindictive, legal policies though; it's like that judge that tried to sue the pants off that drycleaners for mislaying a pair of trousers.

Scientology has taken some good ideas and fucked them up into a controlling money grabbing religion.

Ogranized religion really is a bad thing. It was required to control people in the dark ages but we're a civilized species now and have no modern need for it.

Fair do's / dues, believe in whatever you want to, just keep it personal and without rules and regulations. That's where 80% of this worlds problems stem from. The Clashing of organized religions.

If we were to all keep it personal and base our life on the morals and ideas of our religions rather than the rules and traditions we'd all find that they're pretty similar and we'd get along a whole lot better.

In principle I agree with you, HOWEVER it has not entirely disproven that if you join the CoS you can spend all day nailing hot bitches and fleecing your friends and family for money.

Perhaps CoS is the ultimate pimp/layabout lifestyle?

I've been thinking about religion a lot, recently. It crops up in my thoughts from time to time, particularly if there has been a death, or indeed a birth. I don't believe. I don't have faith. Actually, I struggle who is devoutly religious all that seriously. I look at them in the way I would someone who announced they practiced voodoo, or laughed at 'Withnail and I.'

I do, however, have many Christian morals. Christianity suggests a very pleasant and amicable way of life, once the happy-clappy, jiggery-pokery of it all is airbrushed out. Don't steal, don't lie, don't murder. Be nice to your neighbour, faithful to your wife and grateful to your parents. Happy days.

But there is something wrong in the human psyche. Some inherent mischief that makes us want to stretch the rules, usurp the standards and get more than our fair share of the pie. And that is why God was invented: as a vengeful figure of authority, who could smite the wicked and reward the pure and be as picky as he liked when letting people into that most exclusive of nightclubs: Heaven. People only behaved and developed because they were terrified of being turfed out for having sex before marriage or sexing with goats. Without that caution, we'd still be running around in vicious little tribes, selfish and greedy, with no thought given to the greater good or our fellow Man.

Man. The derivative of everything. Mankind. Humanity. Woman. A Man with a womb. Womb-Man.

Scientology, on the other hand, is the creation of bored minds with too much money and wild, speculative ideals. There's nothing wrong with the Old World religions; they're just out-dated and unnecessary. We have outgrown them. But these Scientologists are weird, tainted with macabre, and could probably do with being sent to the asylum.
