Given the revolutions of the past and present, class warfare, and scheming of those seeking power, the human race has shown a remarkable resilience and managed to survive thus far.
The new factors in the equation of the balance of mankind and the rest of nature are the technological advances that have changed how political and social chaos can develop, and the advances in industry that have the potential to inflict serious environmental alterations. Threats of nuclear war, biological catastrophe, and climate change now bring into question as to how humanity can continue to survive.
Personally, I think that with the growth of true threats to survival, there has been growth of human ingenuity as well. We have yet to release a Frankenstein's monster of technology upon the world. Despite the stockpiles of nuclear weapons, there has been no global warfare. Medical research is in a renaissance of advance. Climate change remains a concern, but I believe that we are an adaptable species, as we have adapted before and will again.
The larger question is how will humanity survive, which is what is asked. It's very likely that the resources of today may no longer be available in a century. But consider the resources available today that were not available a century before. As stated before, we are an adaptable species, and when one window of resources closes, it's likely that other windows will be openable.
Of course, the speed that everything progresses at has increased. Will we be able to adapt in time? Perhaps not for a lot of us, but consider that in the 14th century, the Black Death wiped out over a third of Europe's population. Yet Europe survived and prospered. We may again have a catastophe that has similarly devestating effects, but I feel confident that after the catastrophe, humankind will prosper.
Why do I place this faith in humanity? Because I must. Without the belief that we will continue to grow and overcome the pains of social chaos as we mature as a species, we might as well not have any faith at all. I'm not talking religion (although that may or may not be a part in its current forms), but simply the same belief that we will survive just as much as the sun will rise the next day.
Somehow I don't think others have this faith.
I mean what would you do if you were the last person on earth?
Other than start a monkey army.

I have no hope, nor faith, in humanity. Sorry. We had our chance, we screwed it up. Let's all die of some unstoppable virus (You first. Ha. Ha.) and leave the planet to repair and prepare itself for the advance of the dolphins, or whichever species turn out to be capable of making the evolutionary leaps necessary.

No renaissance? I know a ten year old who was born with his heart on the outside who is now fine. The only reason infant mortality isn't next to 0 in western countries is because of fertitlity treatments for the elderly and risky pregnancies that weren't even possible 10 or 20 years ago. There were many forms of cancer that used to be a death sentence are no taken care of with outpatient care. A middle income person in the western world has much better access to medicine then they would have had at any time inour history. I can see how "renaissance" may not be apt since medicine has steadily gotten better in the last 150 years, but I owuld hardly say that it is going backwards.

What would *I* do if you were the last person on earth?
The FIRST thing I would do is get the bodies of Shlongy, Oathmeal and Ghola. Then I would pile them in a heap. The energy that would be created by each of them trying to get away from one another, even after death, would be enough to power all of the vehicles in my monkey army. Then I would recruit a monkey army.

c)Medical research is in NO WAY in a renaissance of advance. We've reverted to using leeches, and snake oil salesman (pharm. companies). While we've come a long way, we're not in any renaissance at all. True leeches do seem to work, but they're a step backwards, not a step forwards.

As far as frankenstein's monster, we may have created him, but we haven;t released him. Although i am not optomistic about it never happening.

No, no, Berty, it was a metaphor.
Dinosaurs evolved for better than 100,000,000 years, growing from rabbit-sized lizard things to giant quasi-warmblooded socializing behemoths and then got wiped out in a week or so by a huge space bird. Rock. Whatever. They hadn't a clue, and just went about their business. As we do. They're gone and they never even developed the capability to wipe themselves off the planet in an instant as we have. They didn't make so many of themselves that the least disease could decimate them as we have. They didn't arrange their population such that so many of them are dependant on so few of them, as we have. Yet here they are not. It is far more likely than not that our fate will be the same. Have a nice day.

While I think your thoughts are worth reading {+0), I have a few issues with some of your comments.
1)"We have yet to release a Frankenstein's monster of technology upon the world. Despite the stockpiles of nuclear weapons, there has been no global warfare. Medical research is in a renaissance of advance."
All False.
a)We have, and are continuing to improve upon and develop newer and more effective versionsof Frankenstein's monster of technology, at a rapidly increasing rate. True Frankenstein monster of the day? Bio-engineered warfare, which is where we invent little deadly disease machines. Not far off at all from developing a living creature that kills people now is it?
b)There have been 2 (TWO) global wars in the past 100 years. We have nearly averted the 3rd several times so far. We've just been lucky up until now. Also, nuclear stockpiles continue to pile up, and proliferation continues.
c)Medical research is in NO WAY in a renaissance of advance. We've reverted to using leeches, and snake oil salesman (pharm. companies). While we've come a long way, we're not in any renaissance at all. True leeches do seem to work, but they're a step backwards, not a step forwards.
What I WILL laud you on, is your commitment to hope. Here we can agree, as there is a need for hope if we are to survive as a species. For some of us, it may take the form of religion, whereas in others it takes innumerous forms.
Thats all I wanted to say about that.
In lieu of the hope comments, I'll raise it to a +1

I go back and forth.
Sometimes I think we are all animals. I look at the Katrina aftermath. I look at Phelps.
I look at childrens TV in Palestine (in most of the muslim world for that matter).
I see countries sliding backwards into hateful religious fevor (Lebannon, Egypt, Indonesia, Maylasia, etc), or I see countries appeasing it (most of the EU).
I see the only world body that is supposed to protect Human rights decide that free speech is not a right, or at least a right second to not hearing any questions about faith. I see that same body not care abou the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of people. I see a country begging for freedom, and what should be the beacon of reason, freedom and compassion that has the physical strenght to do something about it lack the moral courage to do so.
I look at pet shrinks.
But I do think we will survive, we just won't have peace, freedom, etc for all but a few for a long long time.

D'jever watch an inchworm? They have these four or six sticky feet at the front and the same at the rear, and they move by stretching forward, planting the feet, then lifting the rear and bringing it up to where the front is, and repeating. Doing this, they can span small voids and spaces, making it possible move from branch to branch and plant to plant. They eat leaves and sometimes fruit. Humanity as a whole reminds me of the inchworm. Rear feet firmly planted, front end stretching for that fruit, completely oblivious of the swooping bluejay.

Humans are great. Proper scary though, always looking at you with thier eyes and EXPECTING things. Then there are some of them what are proper mental.
I am going to accuse all people who don't like people of having poor social skills and always turning their dealings with other people into confrontations. I am aware that that is dangerous because people with poor social skills are often angry, and angry people are The Worst Thing, but I fell protected by my thin veil of anonymity.
Although I have poor social skills so perhaps that is bollocks. Or reverse bollocks, like, if you have good social skills then you think other people are lovely but if you have really good social skills you glide through everything but have to work at it so see other people as little more than obstacles, like what happened in that film Munich.

I share your optimisim. My take on it is a little like prices in the stockmarket, like in the way that on a graph the price will rise up to meet a line of resistance and either break through it to establish a new line of resistance or fall back down.
Same thing with human society. Like the Greeks rose up to meet a line of resistance in social evolution, but then fell back down. The Romans rose up to meet that line of resistance and fell back down. Finally the fiefdoms and kingdoms of medievel europe were united, sort of, by the 'global' power of the Catholic church. The theacratic spectre that hovered behind the power of every throne and ruled not with armies or concentrations of power but rather with influence and wealth established a new order. Then came the renaiseance and so on and so on.
I feel that social evolution met a line of resistance during the cold war and broke through it. I don't know what the next line of resistance will be but I suspect it has to do with the pace of social change and the technological implications of advanced information distribution. As the peoples of the world gain the ability to communicate, learn from and work with anyone else in the world instantaneously through technology then it's going to mean a big change for traditional power structures.
Whilst I don't think we'll have to worry about nuclear annihalation, I do think that if society, and thus the governments and institutions of society, cannot grow and adapt to this new situation then we shall see those power blocs crumble like the Roman empire of old. Governments and interested parties around the globe will clamp down on the populace and in so doing destroy themselves.
I reckon that won't happen though, I reckon we're on the cusp of a golden age.
