When I was at boarding school I was befriended by an older girl named Christy. She had stringy brown hair that she'd once dyed black. It had long since grown out, so only the lower half of her hair was black. It was very cool-looking, I thought. Kind of like Debbie Harry.
She shopped at thrift stores and put together really strange outfits. Her artistry was astounding to me. She was almost Japanese in her ability to create exotic looks with just a few inexpensive items of clothing.
I copied her.
I had a lot of trouble with the faculty at that school, and I mean a LOT. I may write about it later...but I might not. I was a lot younger than she was, but Christy took me under her wing after we met in an open art class. She became like an older sister to me, a very cool older sister, wise in the ways of the world.
After I had yet another run-in with the "dorm mother," or whatever she called herself, Christy could see I was very depressed. She took me to the top floor of the dorm, which was where the senior girls lived (it was a very big deal for a girl my age to get to go up there) and we sat on the floor in our slips and ate cake. (Mm-hmm, I have pictures.)
But that was the kind of person Christy was. She was a rebel with a sweet heart, a rock-and-roll chick, a let's-sit-on-the-floor-and-eat-cake-in-our-underwear, fuck-the-dorm-mother type girl.
I worshipped her.
Then Christy gave me what I will always remember as the biggest honour I'd ever had in my young life. She made me a mix-tape. It had really cool songs on it, strange, obscure songs, songs we weren't allowed to listen to at boarding school or they'd be confiscated.
Yes, confiscated. I'll tell you later.
That was why it was so big of a deal: I have no idea how she did it, but she managed to put together a whole tape for me of songs that, had she been caught with them, would have gotten her expelled -- just to cheer me up.
One song I remember in particular was Human Sexual Response's "Jackie Onassis." Another song...well, I've been waking up with parts of it running through my head for a few days now, and I can NOT for the life of me find it, no matter how much I search for it.
I can remember the melody, but unfortunately, that doesn't help.

There are some music aficionados present on this site, and I know some of you know some pretty obscure stuff, or know how to find it. I'm not sure how old the song is, or who it's by. I can't find those lyrics on the internet anywhere. It could be a lost cause.

I just thought of something else, you guys. Since I still have the tape, how do you put songs from a tape onto a CD?

I probably did go through and +2 all her shit at some point. She used to ask me to do that so I did. Things were different then.
