I am reading a true stories crime book, the type that I haven't read for a little while because, to be honest they are depressing and annoying.
The most recent book is covering a story from the US where an abused wife constantly and repeatedly took back a cheating, lying, conniving husband who took her and the entire family for a complete ride.
He was a failed surgeon who practised 'cosmetic' surgery in a general office type area that had been converted to represent an operating theatre. His Board of Certification was fraudulent and he used no qualified nurses during operations (His wife helped out when required). Ultimately he killed one patient and maimed many others.
The wife constantly defended him, refusing to believe he was anything other than an excellent doctor... which is of course what he had been telling her for 10 years. She, in fact, was present at the operation where the patient died.
The book states that ON AVERAGE an abused wife (or sometimes, but rarely husband) endures 11 separations and re-tries at the marriage before they finally walk away
11.... ELEVEN?!
That's 11 times that the husband cheats, walks out, disappears for weeks on end and each time the wife has her life fall apart as the realisation dawns on her that her perfect marriage hasn't worked yet AGAIN.
Constantly she will endure the humiliation of finding out that the husband has a mistress, the heartache that follows, and the thoughts of taking her children away from this controlling man, yet each time they go back.
I cannot understand why all abused wives are so weak willed and pathetic. What is it with these women that they cannot stand up for themselves? Why soak up THAT amount of pain, or humiliation, of treatment without just walking out of the door?
And too add insult to injury, they almost always end up DEFENDING their abusing spouse, stating that he is misunderstood, or 'under great stress'.
In the instance mentioned from the book, the husband poisoned the wife with arsenic and upon being handed PROOF that the husband had poisoned the wife, the wife REFUSED to believe that he could have done it to her.
While I appretiated it must be tough to leave, due to the amount of years commited to the relationship, and I guess maybe deep down you DO believe that you love your partner... but I mean... come on!!
Honestly, should we just give up on these women and leave them to their fate?

its pretty simple, berty. misogyny isnt about hatred of women. its about misunderstanding, in the whole 'men are from mars, women from venus' sense. when someone takes a misogynistic perspective in their writing, whether they think so or not, they are actually just ranting about something they dont understand. as such, misogyny can be a subtle and rich vein of humour if one does (and never should) take it too seriously.

No it isn't. It's about hating women. The word actually means 'hatred of women', which is pretty saft seeing as how we all dropped out of one*.
I guess you could attempt to mine humour by creating a mysognist caricature and laughing at it, but extensive tests were run on this model by the BBC during the '70s and there is conclusive proof that even this simply isn't funny. It MAY be possible with extraordinary writing, but I think you'd need someone with superior talent to the likes of you or I.
(*-and not to mention how much time many of us spend on trying to get back up there!)

I am reading a true stories crime book, the type that I haven't read for a little while because, to be honest they are depressing and annoying.
The most recent book is covering a story from the US where an abused wife constantly and repeatedly took back a cheating, lying, conniving husband who took her and the entire family for a complete ride.
He was a failed surgeon who practised 'cosmetic' surgery in a general office type area that had been converted to represent an operating theatre. His Board of Certification was fraudulent and he used no qualified nurses during operations (His wife helped out when required). Ultimately he killed one patient and maimed many others.
The wife constantly defended him, refusing to believe he was anything other than an excellent doctor... which is of course what he had been telling her for 10 years. She, in fact, was present at the operation where the patient died.
The book states that ON AVERAGE an abused wife (or sometimes, but rarely husband) endures 11 separations and re-tries at the marriage before they finally walk away
11.... ELEVEN?!
That's 11 times that the husband cheats, walks out, disappears for weeks on end and each time the wife has her life fall apart as the realisation dawns on her that her perfect marriage hasn't worked yet AGAIN.
Constantly she will endure the humiliation of finding out that the husband has a mistress, the heartache that follows, and the thoughts of taking her children away from this controlling man, yet each time they go back.
I cannot understand why all abused wives are so weak willed and pathetic. What is it with these women that they cannot stand up for themselves? Why soak up THAT amount of pain, or humiliation, of treatment without just walking out of the door?
And too add insult to injury, they almost always end up DEFENDING their abusing spouse, stating that he is misunderstood, or 'under great stress'.
In the instance mentioned from the book, the husband poisoned the wife with arsenic and upon being handed PROOF that the husband had poisoned the wife, the wife REFUSED to believe that he could have done it to her.
While I appretiated it must be tough to leave, due to the amount of years commited to the relationship, and I guess maybe deep down you DO believe that you love your partner... but I mean... come on!!
Honestly, should we just give up on these women and leave them to their fate?

Still... Having a mother who went from one abusive relationship to the next for the better part of her life, at some point you have to reason that it really is what they want. They want to be the victim.
I don't think anyone goes out looking for it intentionally, but people are drawn to patterns, and once you're in one it can be tough to break out. If you are in a pattern of victimization, it becomes your norm, your comfort zone.
There's also the issue of intelligence/mental stability. Many women in abusive relationships feel that they are too smart to be caught in such a trap, and they deny themselves help because they hold onto the illusion that they can "fix" him, or the relationship.
