From the bottom up, this was a shitty part of town. The cracked pavement, like the flower pot of a gardener who had been taken out of commission, sprouted weeds. They grew a few inches above the ground before they were battered down again by the rusty cars. Brick buildings rose beside the rode, and eroded. From behind cracked windows and torn curtains, one could make out the shapes of dirty aged faces staring blankly out the street below. They weren't waiting for anything but their own deaths. A typical apartment along this street would be filled with the sort of knickknacks you might find in a gift shop, but in a place like this, they lose their original meaning, and become ironic tokens of the past - a frog sitting on a lily pad, writing in his diary, and beside him a crack pipe. Withered fingers commanded by sightless eyes grope the mantle, searching for the pipe, and the frog doesn't blink. The frog doesn't even try to eat the fly that's eating the potato chip that sits on the pond. The frog has given up as well.

The sky above this shitty part of town is just as deep and just as blue as the sky above the grassy fields of the Hudson River Valley School, with just the perfect amount of clouds. The people of this neighborhood, however, have forgotten how to turn their heads up, and look to the sky. Instead, they walk the streets, staring at their feet, wondering how their shoes became so ragged. One man steps in a pile of dog shit and it doesn't faze him. He has long since forgotten the smell of anything but feces and decay.

An entire town of living dead. The fiber of life that once bound this old community together had for some reason succumbed to atrophy. If the strings were plucked too suddenly, say by a street musician's guitar, they would be severed. Luckily for them, this was not a possibility; the living learned to avoid this place. It'd be more likely to see a few bulldozers. A wrecking ball or two, perhaps, could level this place, and create a grave for them to finally rest.

We ought to euthanize this community. Since when were death camps evil? Since when was social Darwinism politically incorrect? Don't be absurd.

A new highway might help. The school is in the way, but they don't use it. Tear it down. The noise won't bring them from their intoxicated sleep. Put on your gloves and bury them. That's it. They don't even realize that all their roads have been cut off from the rest of the city. And with a little more rubble we will have created a Chernobyl Sarcophagus. Should the living dead ever become self aware, they will not be able to escape. It's such a genius plan.

More "No Outlet" signs over here, please. One day they will learn how to read, and when they do, I want a yellow sign to tell them to go back. A factory over there now. That section of town has a lower rate of cancer. One day they will die of old age before their time.

Maybe we can be constructive about this instead? Let's trap them with an enormous mote, build high fences and observational decks. Bring your children. It's a lesson in failure that they won't forget. Tell them that if they do poorly, you will drop them into the enclosure and forget about them. That's right, kid. Bring your saddle and find a roach or rat of appropriate size, and show it to the gates. Do well, and you will be the keeper of the vermin stable. You have a legacy to live up to, damn it.

The comments below are mostly valid, but something about this piece reminds me of the West Village in NYC. . .

I am sure this would be the first prime example the reader stumbles upon, regarding Phallics comments.
This line, along with others, is awful.

You're not very good at writing and your sentiments are clumsy and poor.
