President Bush did make a bad mistake in the war on terrorism. But the mistake was not his decision to go to war in Iraq . (Many countries were convinced that Iraq had WMD's.)
Bush's mistake came in his belief that this country is the same one his father fought for in WWII. It is not.
Back then, they had just come out of a vicious depression. The country was steeled by the hardship of that depression, but they still believed fervently in this country. They knew that the people had elected their leaders, so it was the people's duty to back those leaders.
Therefore, when the war broke out the people came together, rallied behind, and stuck with their leaders, whether they had voted for them or not or whether the war was going badly or not.
And war was just as distasteful and the anguish just as great then as it is today. Often there were more casualties in one day in WWII than we have had in the entire Iraq war. But that did not matter. The people stuck with the President because it was their patriotic duty. Americans put aside their differences in WWII and worked together to win that war.
Everyone from every strata of society, from young to old pitched in. Small children pulled little wagons around to gather scrap metal for the war effort.
Grade school students saved their pennies to buy stamps for war bonds to help the effort.
Men who were too old or medically 4F lied about their age or condition trying their best to join the military. Women doubled their work to keep things going at home. Harsh rationing of everything from gasoline to soap, to butter was imposed, yet there was very little complaining. (Women would trade rationing coupons and tokens to get what each needed.)
You never heard prominent people on the radio belittling the President. Interestingly enough in those days there were no fat cat actors and entertainers who ran off to visit and fawn over dictators of hostile countries and complain to them about our President. Instead, they made upbeat films and entertained our troops to help the troops' morale. And a bunch even enlisted.
And imagine this: Teachers in schools actually started the day off with a Pledge of Allegiance, and with prayers for our country and our troops!
Back then, no newspaper would have dared point out certain weak spots in our cities where bombs could be set off to cause the maximum damage. No newspaper would have dared complain about what we were doing to catch spies.
A newspaper would have been laughed out of existence if it had complained that German or Japanese soldiers were being 'tortured' by being forced to wear women's underwear, or subjected to interrogation by a woman, or being scared by a dog or did not have air conditioning.
There were a lot of things different back then. We were not subjected to a constant bombardment of pornography, perversion and promiscuity in movies or on radio. We did not have legions of crack heads, dope pushers and armed gangs roaming our streets.
No, President Bush did not make a mistake in his handling of terrorism. He made the mistake of believing that we still had the courage and fortitude of our fathers. He believed that this was still the country that our fathers fought so dearly to preserve.
It is not the same country. It is now a cross between Sodom and Gomorra and the Land of Oz. We did unite for a short while after 9/11, but our attitude changed when we found out that defending our country would require some sacrifices (and take some time).
We are in great danger. The terrorists are Fanatic Muslims. They believe that it is okay, even their duty, to kill anyone who will not convert to Islam. It has been estimated that about one third or over three hundred million Muslims are sympathetic to the terrorists cause... Hitler and Tojo combined did not have nearly that many potential recruits. So... We either win it - or lose it - and you ain't gonna like losing.
America is not at war. (Unfortunately only) The military is at war. America is at the mall.

At least our gracious host had the decentcy to back up his negative review with an actualy reason, not just becasue he disagrees with what was said and telling me to go fuck myself or some such nonsence.

and while i agree that these are very different times indeed, mostly a time of great distraction where people care more about what's happening on their favorite TV show than in the rest of the world, but this is also a different kind of war.

I'll drink to any kind of war that's based on fiscal/economic power rather than bodycounts or nukes. Perhaps I am being naive though.
This post reads like it was written by a closet fascist.

i never believed Saddam had WMDs. i can honestly say that i don't think the government did either. mostly because a good friend of mine was in the room when Bush announced the war to his generals and i've done all the research on the information that you people aren't allowed to see.
some of you may remember me writing about the war and how much i hated it. a lot of you criticized me. so, instead of talking the talk and not walking the walk like ETS, i decided to do something about it and go to Iraq and Afghanistan. i got back from my second Iraq trip this past week. spent three months out there. the first time was a year.
i traveled around the country this time. i went to the places where Saddam stored his weapons. i will post pictures if you don't believe me. when i mentioned WMDs to the people there, they all laughed and snickered. they all knew there was nothing there and knew that anyone with a brain could look at the intel and see that it was not very probable that Saddam had anything but the usual munitions.
i was against this war from the beginning and i have never changed my mind. i still support our troops because i used to be one and the military is has been a big part of my life for the past 7 years. i have family and good friends that also served or have done so, including my father, grandfather, and brother.
i think i now understand what Bush was trying to do and it seems to me now that he was trying to do something about the problems in the Middle East as a whole, using Iraq as the catalyst. i believe it's because he wanted to secure his name in history mostly. anyone who knows anything about Muslim culture in the Middle East, particularly Sunni and Shiite tribes, should know what the consequences of destabilizing Iraq would have been. come on, i'm 26 and *I* get it.
invest in those Iraqi Dinar, people! once the US oil companies are allowed to get their piece, you'll be rich in less than 5 years! that time is fast approaching. look at how scared Saudi Arabia got when we announced US oil companies would be allowed in Iraq. they held an emergency international oil conference. this is going to start getting goooooooood....

This sounds like the transcript of a Ford commercial.
The reason why Americans never supported the war in Iraq is because it was obvious from the start that the evidence against Iraq was at best nonexistent.
WWII: Hitler kills 6 million Jews, invades Poland, France, Czechoslovakia, bombs London, Japanese bomb Hawaii
Saddam Hussein: Country has no money, no army, has performed no act of aggression, but we need to invade because they're suddenly a major threat to the United States on the opposite side of the planet?
I completely agree that you can blame Americans for the failure in the middle east. You can blame the 50% that reelected the most corrupt administration in history. The same 50% that stops the progression of science, can't grasp basic economic principles, and thinks the best way to stop a flood is to pray. Why weren't they sacrificing anything for the war effort? Too busy baking American flag cakes and holding candlelight vigils.

In WWII we were attacked. Iraq never even seriously dreamed of attacking us. Kind of changes your argument, doesn't it?
It should.

I agree with beeltea. WWII was just that, a World War. If the Iraq war isn't 'won' (how you would define that is anyone's guess, because just waiting until that ridiculous estimate you made equals the enemy casualty list), the U.S.A. will not be bombarded by a fleet of Muslim cruisers or nuclear bombs (which were being developed rapidly on the side of the Germans).
People back then rallied for a much more real and massive threat than those scattered and underequipped bunch of morons the U.S.A. opted to face today.

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State."
