I am the daughter of a sensible woman. Grounded and gifted with a practical sensibility, a clarity that I, unfortunately, inherited so little of. She used to say to me, "Baby, life is tough. it starts out tough and it gets tougher."
It's a shame then, that for as long as I can remember, my mind has been bubble-wrapped and blanketed in a hurricane of fantasy, indecision and fatalism. I would say that it's something just to recognize that about myself, but it's of little use since I generally lack the finer skills of absorption that prevent most people from making the same mistakes time and again. I'm prone, somewhat intermittently, to reasonable ideas...but that my mind isn't governed by any kind of reasonability tends to negate them.
My mother would say that when it comes to me, "common sense isn't always so common". She would say, "It's generally better to expect the worst in people because, that way, you can either be pleasantly surprised or, at the very least, finally right about something". To her dismay, I always just assumed that whatever it was about me that inspired a protectiveness in people would keep me from ever experiencing heartache or harm. It turns out, there's something to be said for cynicism.
It's been said that human beings are perplexing creatures...and who am I to disagree? In a basic sense, we're all so predictably reactionary. We lead these tumultuous lives wherein we connect to, desire, love, lie to, discard and embrace each other. It's overwhelming. I feel overwhelmed by it in a way that makes me perversely envious of the bits of dust and fluff that congregate aimlessly in their blissful inanimateness around the corners of this house. I'm an intelligent girl, but intelligence is really just an abstraction that looks good on paper. I lack simple intuition and my goldfish memory leaves me perpetually surprised by the wherewithal that people have to be so reckless and selfish with the hearts of others.
My mother would read these words and say to me, "You...are an innocent".
It sounds like a sentimental consideration, but i know that in fact, she means it to express how she worries about me in a way that she will never need to for my sister.

If you are accurately describing yourself in this post, here is some truth for you: The world contains a large number of people who will take advantage of you. You can minimize the instances of this happening by a) never giving anyone any item or information that is personally yours unless you initiate the contact in which such transfer occurrs, b) never agreeing to pay for anything unless you initiate the contact in which the transaction is agreed upon, c) trusting no one whose home address and telephone number you don't know, and d) learning some form of physical self defense. However, there is no sustitute for the awareness of one's surroundings and experience that you seem to think are beyond you. Good luck.
