You didn't need locksly to tell you that Hollywood has been dumbing down movies for decades now and in order to enjoy a mainstream flick you have to be an ignorant redneck, with a short attention span and an inability to question the plot.

A lot of critics argue it was Independence Day that signaled the end of good cinema as we know it. Of course others would argue that movies were shit way before that, and there are others still that think The Fast and The Furious was one of the best movies of all time.

The point of a movie is to engage and entertain you. In my view a film creator or director has succeeded if you come away from watching a movie and have a different view about a subject, or are able to see another side of a story. Of course that is quite rare these days.

For perhaps the first time ever, television is now home to shows and mini series that are far superior to a new Hollywood release. I suppose this is due to companies like HBO who found a way to get enough revenue from TV and DVD sales to produce top quality stuff.

Examples : Sopranos, Rome, The Wire. I would rather watch 3 episodes of any of these shows back to back than sit down and watch a new Hollywood film.

When did movies become so crap? What are the commercial aspects behind it? Obviously no one wants to make a shit movie but movies are judged on their box office revenue, opening weekend revenue and their DVD sales. These things do not reflect the quality of a movie but rather the sales and marketing hype behind it.

I never thought I would sit down and prefer a made for TV drama than a movie but media has changed.

Besides the 3 shows already mentioned I really fucking dig Human Giant at the moment.

I own both seasons of Rome(who'd guess the guy studying history)! HBO, Showcase, etc make series that are faaaaaar better than any movie. I can't wait for the new season of Dexter
_______

I never though I would give a fuck about ancient Roman society but after watching season 1 and 2 back to back over about 3 days I started reading up and watching more documentaries about Rome. Now I have thirst for knowledge and am actually learning which is rare.

Thanks HBO for sparking an interest

A slight interenst in Roman history huh? Well don't worry, it'll pass. It's not like it had more influence than any state, gov't, society in human existence.

I'm gonna be here for like 2 more minutes. Talk movies with me, someone.

Speaking of hacky directors, like del Toro, how about how he establishes that the dude in the Pan's whatever is evil? He's so evil, he's gonna kill someone in his first scene! Subtlety is for cunts!

Well there were a whole bunch of comedies that I didn't include because they sucked, but they'd probably be right up your alley.

I thought that Pan's Labyrinth or whatever you wanna call it sucked pretty much all the way through. The make-up effects were cool and that was about it.

I am a Mooninite. My culture is superior.

Well the only one on that list i liked was Supertroopers.

I think i'm just too ADD for feature films these days. Too much aqua teen.

Also, El Labarinto Del Fauno was awesome until i heard Guillermo Del Toro say that the girl did actually become the princess at the end and didn't just die.

I'd say the two listed above, and to a lesser extent "thank you for smoking" are the only good movies I've seen since around 2000.

--------

Decent, major films since 2000:

2000: American Psycho, The Emperor's New Groove, Gladiator, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Memento, O Brother Where Art Thou?, Quills, Shadow of the Vamiper, Snatch, Traffic.

2001: AI, Black Hawk Down, Donnie Darko, Frailty, Monsters Inc, Lord Of The Rings 1, Ocean's 11, The Royal Tenenbaums, Spy Game, Training Day, Vanilla Sky, Y Tu Mama Tambien.

2002: 28 Days Later, Adaptation, The Bourne Identity, Catch Me If You Can, Gangs Of New York, Insomnia, Lord of the Rings 2, One Hour Photo, Punch-Drunk Love, Road To Perdition, Spiderman 1, Supertroopers.

You get the idea and I'm sick of looking this stuff up now.

Anyway, there's always several fallacies when thinking about modern movies v classics. For a start, the "classics" pool is a lot bigger; you're drawing on 50+ years of cinema and cherry-picking the best and saying, "whoa, they shore dun make movies like that no more." Whereas if you're talking about "modern" then you're usually picking from a much narrower field of 5-10 years.

Because you're much more aware of modern movies, as well, you get exposed to shittier ones. You're not gonna go watch 1979's equivalent of Sex and the City (unless for some sort camp thing), because it's been rightfully forgotten. But you are gonna remember that, for example, Apocalypse Now came out then. So you go "Oh, they don't make 'em like that these day!" after being inundated with trailers for utter shit all year - forgetting that each year sees the release of at least 1 or 2 truly great films. Last year had No Country For Old Men, The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford and Zodiac: all awesome movies.

There are good movies being made all the time. Mainstream movies have been dumbed down because mainstream people are getting dumber. American Idol outlasted Arrested Development. I rest my case

Most movies suck because the producers have so much money invested in the movie that they try to make it appeal to as many people as possible so they can at least break even at the box office. Nobody wants to take a chance when they have that much money tied up in a project. On top of that, the investors and the studio pressure the writers and producers to avoid any content that might turn off the audience.

movies geared towards children are probably the best movies out in the past few years....I thought Kung Fu Panda was good and Wall-E (although intellectually a little above it's target audience) but on the whole movies are crap.

but you have to go in with that understanding....movies are crap...entertainment as a business is crap. Low cost and high profit run everything nowadays. Do it for cheap, sell it for a lot and laugh all the way to the bank, meanwhile the 'instant gratification appetite' of the consumer gets satisfied and everyone is happy on the surface but there is no substance.

I see, hopefully, a return to traditional values, ideals, entertainment in the coming years. The TV's are being shut down and families are going for bike rides, business is down at WD World while KOA campsites pick up.

Call me a dreamer.

Industry conservatism and popular apathy.

The last few good movies i've seen are:

John Rambo (80's Arnie macho flicks are my favourites. Predator FTW.)

No Country For Old Men (It seems to be a "love it or hate it" thing and I'm the former)

Then I'm getting back to older movies that I've just found, like Withnail or Baraka.

I'd say the two listed above, and to a lesser extent "thank you for smoking" are the only good movies I've seen since around 2000.
