I think it is in our nature to want to be "bad." Not evil, necessarily, but unrestrained by many of society's rules. We want to drink, smoke, fuck, act like jackasses, not go to work, if we do go to work tell our bosses to STFU, tell people on internet forums what we really think of them (even if we don't really think that of them), etc. We all THINK about robbing that bank for a quick score - but we are afraid of the legal consequences and, truth be told, most of us don't have it in us to do what is necessary to get away with it (i.e., shoot everybody in the place).

This whole subject has been on my mind recently. Specifically, the need for humans to have an external mechanism to control their behavior because they are unable to do so themselves. In a word - religion. And my musing on the subject has made me pay particular attention to the religious influences that surround us. I have not just become "aware" of these influences - I have a long history with the Roman Catholic Church. It is more like a research project - trying to understand how all of this (i.e., religion) evolved.

That is why I was fascinated when I recently saw Lucifer portrayed in a movie. I was immediately drawn in by the subject matter, and was a little surprised at how comfortable I was with the character. I LIKED HIM. The character was obviously EVIL (in that he could do unimaginably horrible things to kids, puppies and old ladies and have a good time doing it) , but I liked him - almost wanted to be him. Don't we all find ourselves rooting for the bad guy? I think it is just in our nature.

So, for a little entertainment, I thought we would do a poll -

What actor or actress has portrayed Satan best in a movie?

When answering, I would like you to keep a few things in mind. First, I am talking about Satan here. Otherwise known as Lucifer or "Scratch" in some circles. Remember, Lucifer was an angel who was cast out of Heaven and was subsequently referred to as Satan. We are not talking about devils or demons like

Richard Moll in "Dungeon Master."

I swear I'm not making this up
-----------------------------------
Does not qualify. Although I have not seen the movie, all internet sources state that "Mestema" in "The Dungeonmaster" played by Richard Moll is a sorcerer - not Satan.

Wikipedia's entry: "A computer programmer/enthusiast Paul Bradford (Jeffery Byron), and his girlfriend Gwen (Leslie Wing), get sucked into another world where a sorcerer named Mestema, known as "The Dungeonmaster" (Richard Moll), has them interact in seven different scenarios/riddles to see who can survive. They must figure out how to escape from each scenario, which in most cases the riddle's solution involves zapping things with Bradford's wristband computer X-CaliBR8."

I would go with Pacino. This was quite timely, as I've been spending most of the last few days considering how one would take the steps necessary to become an international drug kingpin.

I've also frequently thought out how I would go about killing people, or robbing places. The dark side is always there, but it's balanced, because one can't exist without the other, and there's the other part of me that made me put up 3 new bird-feeders today before I played with my dogs.

Robert Judd had a really limited career. I'm pretty sure this was his only role - or one out of two. Funny thing is, he died shortly after the film (Crossroads) was released.

Laird Creegar - and thanks for that.

I saw this as a kid and never forgot it, but I never knew the actor or the name of the movie until now.

It made an impression on me so that I've always pictured Satan that way, as an executive/ambassador type sitting behind a big fancy desk, not a red-skinned horned ugly nasty critter.

Honorable mention to Robert Judd whoever the hell he is. For me, there is something really demonic about a skinney skull-faced old black man. I once ate too much peyote before a Jefferson Starship concert and spent most of the concert scared shiteless that Papa John Creech was going take the Iowa City Fieldhouse and everyone in it straight down to hell.

My choice is Viggo although Celentano's character scared the piss out of me. To me, Viggo had that perfect blend of intellectual and feral. He was the most loathesome of creatures and angelic perfect at the same time. Peter Stormare gets honorable mention.
