I have been noticing lately that everyone refers to cancer as a battle. i.e. "My father had a battle with prostate cancer and lost."
Considering the stakes of cancer are death...shouldn't a fight with it be classified as a war?

Sure, but those are usually quick matches lasting only a few minutes. What Battle to the Death have you ever heard of lasting months to years?

A battle is a shorter term conflict, while a war is the long term conflict. For example, Method's Mom lost various battles with chastity on the way to losing her war against whoredom.
