That Martinez fight was the first time I got back in the ring in 10 years. It wasn't exactly what someone should take on as a tune up fight, but I wanted to know exactly where I was. (Taking medals at a grappling tournament is one thing, but trying to get a submission while someone is punching you in the face is an entirely different matter.)
My plan is to work my way down to 205 and eventually maybe even try to get down to 185. I'll slowly get my natural weight down to 205 over the next couple of months. I don't have much to go as I've been floating between 215 and 220, but I'm in no hurry as Jones has a fight August 30th against Ken Stone for US Fight League at Mohegan Sun.
The biggest lesson we took away from the Manchester event was not to bite off more then we can chew. We had 4 fighters competing in that show, one of which was me, and I had to coach the other 3 while trying to mentally prepare for my own fight. We were running around like crazy and our cutman, who had been asked by a 5th fighter to corner for him as well, didn't have one damn second to breathe. It was madness. I don't think I'll ever coach and fight at the same event again, especially to more than one fighter. So for right now, I'm just going to lift lighter, up my cardio, and focus on getting Jones ready for this next fight. Ken Stone was ranked 5th in the area by Mass MMA and he's no joke. We're going to work harder than ever for this fight.
I suppose that was a really long answer, which could be summed up in the sentence, "I fight every couple of months usually, so expect word in September or October."

TL - A prudent and professional man would say that he fought like that because it was his first match and it was a simple mistake. An emotional man would say he fought like that because my kicks hurt him and he knew he would be fucked if it went to the ground. Either way, he hit me harder than I've ever been hit before. I have a lot of respect for Al Martinez' fighting ability. Much was said about the match here http://massmma.net/readMore.php?id=719 and here http://massmma.net/readMore.php?id=728 but the long and the short of it is that I went looking for a fight, I found it, I learned more from that pro loss than any of my amateur wins, and I'll be back stronger/faster/lighter/smarter next time.
