My father was an abusive alcoholic, still is for all I know.
He cheated on my mother with pretty much any woman he could find that would submit to his drunken fumblings.
During that time he gave mum an STD which she didn't know about until it was too late and it fucked up all her insides and she had to have a hysterectomy at the ripe old age of 25 otherwise she would die - and directly lead to her current problems where her pain is barely survivable without her daily doses of morphine.
He once beat mum so severely that all her natural teeth were punched out her mouth and from the age of 29 she has had a full set of false teeth.
She finally got the guts to kick him out when I was 12 years old. Where he promptly took off for Australia and we never saw him again.
My mum's next boyfriend was equally as abusive and used to shut the power off to my room ( it was a unit out the back) over the smallest infraction - such as the time I didn't finish my yogurt. My little sisters used to sneak out of their rooms in the main house and come and stay with me most nights.
One night mum's boyfriend got wasted and tried to crawl into the bed of my little sister who was 14 at the time. Mum stopped him and they got into a fight where he kicked her in the chest with a steel capped boot and sent her to hospital with 3 broken ribs.
He went to jail for 8 months. When he got out he stalked our family for months. He would stand outside the house watching us - one night he broke into my room (which was the garage adjacent to the house) and forced me to use my house keys to get into the house. Once I got free I called the cops and he spent the next 2 years in jail mainly based on my testimony. I was 16 at the time.
A few months later I met a guy and we were together for the next five and half years. I cheated on him. With my best friends boyfriend of six years.
He never knew. Nor will he ever. Neither does my best mate. It's all over with now.
I have been single for 2 years now and in that time I've slept with 12 guys. Far from slutty in today's standards.
The last guy I was involved with got me pregnant. We had started our relationship based mainly on sex, we were safe. 3 or so months into it I was sitting in a bathroom crying with my flatmate holding the positive pregnancy test.
He tried to be the good guy for about 2 weeks after I had the abortion. He was being fake and I knew it. Sad thing was he was trying to get rid of me and I kept hanging around. He was too weak to tell me to fuck off and even though I knew what he was doing I was too messed up to let him let me go.
I visit my local pub about 3 / 4 times a week. Sometimes it's a pint and i'm off home. Sometimes it's about 12 pints and numerous shots of whatever and I wake up somewhere random. There's a group of us that go down there most nights. We're card carrying VIP's, which means we get half price drinks. There's about 9 of us 'young un's' (the VIP's tend to be old pommy guys) One of the 'young un's' has had a crush on me for awhile. I've been aware of it, and never did anything about it until he got a girlfriend.
He broke up with said girlfriend 2 days ago. And I've already made plans with him for tomorrow. We're going to fuck. I know it, even if he get's back together with her.
All in all it makes me not a very nice person. I'm out for myself.
I farted. So what.

The first half of the post is a historical account, and I don't glean that or any part of the post as an attempt to garner sympathy. But the second half sounds like a less than satisfied assessment of your modern life, based on decisions you've made. Maybe it's an aim at putting things into perspective and sorting the things out about your situation that you don't like, and figuring out which ones you can do something about. No matter how big of a cynic you may be, or how little you care to abide by someone else's standards of happiness or morality, confessions to self can be really fucking scary...and healthy. I think I can safely say without the risk of sounding judgmental that you sound like you may not be adverse to a change, and that you shared this for a reason, whether you know it or not. It seems like a step in a happier direction to me.

I'm having a difficult time caring. The protaganist has external problems, and she's certainly not hateable, but she's also making problems of her own, which makes this less of a hero VS self story, and more of a 'hero accepts their inherent flaws and goes down to the bar for a pint', which isn't a story at all, really.
