All This Sico/Sicosemen Talk Has Me Thinking (1602 hits)

It has been 4+ months since I was last a member here. I enjoy this place quite a lot but the past months I've been quite busy and have only been able to come here about once a week. I see that it hasn't lost the luster, not Uber ever had any. The once a week visits waned to every two weeks because of my busy schedule.
I moved and have since taken on a Jr. Chemist position for a well known company revolving around polyurethane foam manufacturing and I must say that I LOVE IT! This is perhaps the best thing that has ever happened to me. I work within the Technical Analysis Department and more specifically Rigid Systems. Everything from formulations, to calculations, to plain old densities have been good for me not to mention have kept me busy.
It also lends some credence to the observations of my epic failure in writing. My heart is in the sciences and the maths; always has been. I'm enjoying doing titrations on an aquameter, I like blending polyols with isocynates (TDI-TolueneDiisocyanate or MDI-Methylene Diphenyl Isocyanate), and quite frankly am a happier person altogether. It's really warming when you can enjoy going to work each and every day. I am going back to school next semester to further educate myself and get ahead.
Some of the things I am working with right now are complicated in mathematical and scientific structure and am in need of further education to help myself understand it.
Basically, I just wanted to say hello to everyone and let them know that I come by now and again...if you care, good, if not, all the same. To each their own.

From minor splashes, spills, other items on trajectory...yes. There's PPE for every situation depending on what you are doing. If I'm working with a spray blown system then I'll opt for Tyvek coveralls, goggles, gloves, and boots. Most of what I do can have me protected with a lab coat and safety glasses.

My lab coat is justified. If you ever get to work with foam you'd understand why, not to mention some of the catalysts/surfactants/solvents/etc. I work with are fairly caustic.

Yes, and no. We have many applications: marine buoyancy, cold storage (i.e. walk-in refigerators), building insulation, molding, toys, surfboards, etc. I don't make or manufacture the stuff. I work in a lab that develops new formulations or products, tests existing ones in events of failure, and speculates on future projects. An upcoming project is a 134-fa blown foam system using high pressure bottling for marine applications. Big ass boats...we'll be looking at developing a system that allows the pressure bottles to be movable that way you spray the hull of a boat before you put the shell on. Think yachts as big as boats and not tankers.

I'm majoring in accounting, sico, probably no foam for me. Right now all I'm doing is typing up newsletters and reconciling bank accounts (fucking boring), but I get to do it remotely from home, which means I can get high (not boring).
Ha, one time I was entering the running balance as the amount for my credits for about 15 minutes, and the real amounts for my debits were already entered. So, for about another ten minutes, I stared at my computer screen wondering why the credits were in the billions, while the debits were about 1.6 million.
My god, I apparently find accounting amusing now, all hope is lost...

If we aren't in scrubs and gumph we are supposed to wear lab coats. The hospital is in review over this because of MRSA, they don't feel that the hospital washes it's lab coats as effectively as our own clothes, so in non-clinical areas, they are bringing in an own clothes rule. That and some rules about White coat syndrome......I found it quite worrying that the hospital can't wash a coat well.
