Hey ya'll..=)
It's been a while for me since i've been on, and for somewhat of a good reason, we FINALLY got a computer! So no more webtv for me.
We had thought about it for some time, but never knew what to buy, how to buy, the best system, and all the nitty gritty of investing in such an item. We broke down and got a used DELL from Aarons rend a center..lol. This way, I have the option to give it back, should the system not work for me, or should we decide later to buy another model. We will be paying this one off in March 2004.
It's a DELL (a Texas based company) Dimension 2350. With an Intel pentuim 4 processor @ 2.20 GHz, 128 MB shared DDR SDRAM @ 266MHz. 4O GB hard drive, with 5400 RPM. Integrated Intel 3D extreme graphics, 48x CD-ROM drive. Integrated Audio, and 56K Data fax modem. Came with microsoft windows XP home edition, Wordperfect Productivity, with Quicken new user edition. (I later erased the Quicken file as I have no need for it).
Whatever the hell that means..lol. Like I said, I know so little about computers, and what's good and what's not, that I just picked the prettiest one I saw..LOL. Whoever was the original orderer at DELL upgraded to a 17" monitor, with this really cool sensor mouse. We got the system for basic home use, internet surfing, and to let the kids play games like Candyland, or any learning game.
When I got the system and got my MSN all hooked up and ready, logged on, the first thing I then had to do was spend over 4 hours on the phone with Microsoft and MSN, ridding my system of the blaster worm virus. Aarons said they didn't have this system but a day or 2 when I got it, so i'm guessing that may be why the previous owners gave it up. Aarons also 'restored' it back to it's original state and erased all the un-needed and un-wanted files from the previous owners, cleaned out the cookies and all that good stuff. So I got the system as it originally came.
Tell me what you think...I'd like to know from some people that have more knowledge in this area than I do, if this system is what we are looking for. Everything has been great with it, the speed is 10000 times better than webtv, even know I still have dial-up. We will eventually be buying a printer and having best-buy or someone install a cd burner into it for us.
But anyways, that's where i've been. I've been spending allot of time in the control panel of the computer trying to get familiar with as much as I can. Added a cool background for my desktop, and a scrolling banner for my screen saver, i'm having a blast!
Any advice, ideas, input would be appreciated. Until then, I expect a full-blown inagural ball to welcome me to the land of puter-people..=)~
xoxoxo Queen
And if there are any typos and or mis-spellings, bare with me, I still have no clue where things like "spellcheck" are found....lol.

Are you a computer programmer? If not, it sounds fine to me.
If you are a computer programmer: shoot yourself, there's no help for you.
*********************************************************
Dude, y'know, some of us still *LOVE* programming and we spend *HOURS* optimizing the code we write (sometimes 15 hours straight-my personal best). I happen to have a Pentium 2, 350 mhz with 64megs of ram and 8.6gig hard drive. But the games I code in pure assembly and C *KICK* *ASS* on my lame 4megs video card.
Remember, a faster computer won't bring you happiness unless you know what the hell you're doing with it.
PS. I own a sparc machine, too, and my PC is a dual boot Linux-Windows box, so all of your badass computers running windoze eXtra Painful can simply eat my shorts.

Queen, computers are my life. i'm a huge nerd. it's really embarrasing...
anyway, as long as a computer does what you want it to, then it's a good one. you don't have to have the top of the line if you just need to type a paper up. my problem is that they don't make computers that can do what i want them to. i always need more.... faster processor, more RAM, bigger hard drive, faster video card....
if anyone has ever been in a server room, you know what's it's like here at Crash's. a very loud hum from lots of computers....

Awww Mick, I would never leave you baby!
And thanx all for thw advice and such, Hidden you have me scared shitless...lol. But thanx to the sweet words of Loki and Insane, I feel as though it is enough just for basic home internet surfing and kiddo games. That's all we use it for. We bought a printer for it today, a lexmark job with a scanner so we can take advantage of my sis-n-laws digital camera untill we get one. But that's it for me, Like I said I might make invitations and what not thru word, but I don't need any fancy programs or crazy multi-tasking functioning. It seems fine so far, but If I have any questions, comments or concerns Hidden, I'll give you a shout, you definately sound like you know your stuff.
Thanx again all...=)~

Hidden is speaking gibberish, none of that is necessary. I think he may be a terrorist. By the time you know everything you need to know about this computer, you'll know exactly what you need to get.

i just built a super badass computer for under $400. the motherboard is the Nforce2 chipset, and RAID controller on it supports RAID 0 and 1. i will be doing a stripe 0 array, once i get another HD. i put the Athlon XP 2500 in it- yes, bitches, that's the new Barton core. Crash bought one, too, and he's been spending the morning overclocking, and this Barton will blow the XPs rated above it out of the water. anyway, this son of a bitch is super fast, and will be WAY faster once Crash finishes finding out the right voltage and clock speed combination and i get a gig of Corsair XMS RAM for it (the board has two dual-channel memory slots), and do my stripe 0 RAID array with 80 gig drives. Crash is talking about putting Cheetah drives in the servers. fuckin' SCSI 320 15,000 rpm drives.... mmmmm....
i love my work machine. it's dual 2 gig P4s, 2 gigs of RAM, three 15,000rpm 36gig SCSI drives doing a stripe 0 array, a dual gigabit NIC and a regular 10/100 NIC, and more. i love this machine. yes, i have my own office (not a cubicle) AND i have a BADASS computer. suckers!

theres a reason why dell rhymes with hell, queen.
never buy from vendors. they overcharge you for inferior goods. dont get me wrong, youve got a fine pc for what you will need, and in all likelyhood it will far FAR exceed your highest requirements, but you could have gotten a far superior machine for less money (though dell do have a warranty that you can place some trust in).
its like when you go to buy a car. you take someone along who knows about cars, you should do exactly the same for computers...
+1 for the joy of a new pc. im buying a new one this week!""
i second your commments about buying OEM crap like Dell, Comqrap, Hewlett Crappard, etc.
and i jsut bought a new rig about two months ago, built it myself, and spent less than $400.
AMD AthlonXP 2600+
Soyo Dragon KT400 motherboard
512MB PC2700 DDR RAM
80GB IBM deskstar 7200RPM drive
Fudin RAIDmax full tower case
GeForce3 Ti 500 (i think it's a 500) that I had laying around (how nerdy is that? i had a vid-card that cost me nearly $200 back in the day just "laying around". kind of like how I have an ancient Soundblaster card, an accton 10mb NIC, and a NetGear 10/100 NIC "laying around")
SBlive 5.1 soundcard, pulled out of my old celeron
I used the CD-ROM i had intended to put in another machine at first, but now I have a plextor 48x/24x/48x rewritable i need to put in it

Queen, if you payed any more than $400 for this computer, you got screwed and didn't even know it. i'm sure it does what you want it to, though, so that's good enough. me being a computer enthusiast NERD, i just couldn't stop myself from telling you that what you just described to me was probably the most low-end computer you can get. don't take it personally. that's how us nerds are. i'm trying to get the nerd out, but i just can't. why do i feel the strong urge to tell you something like this? i wish i could just grow up and get the nerd out of me. hopefully, someday... *sigh*
ps- you can put that CD burner in yourself. if you knew how easy it really was, you kick yourself for even thinking about paying Best Buy (or as i like to call them, Worst Buy) to do it. if you want to do it yourself and learn a little bit more about your computer in the process (the more you learn about it, the easier it will be to troubleshoot it, if something starts acting up) just email me. i can walk you through putting it in yourself. the only tool you need is a philips head screwdriver.

I did Tech Support for Dell for a while.
The nickname (names given to every dell computer) for the 2350 was "Bluford 2"
It is by far the biggest piece of shit dell has ever made. The case is made by some Chinese company.. Any failure on this computer is ALWAYS due to the motherboard, which takes about 30+ screws to get out. It was such a pain in the ass to talk a customer through troubleshooting this thing...
If it works, great!
If not, return that shit in a heartbeat, dont even bother with tech support.

u have a pretty good computer there. I just think that maybe you got screw because you bought it at a rent a center. You should have just bought it from dell...using one of those ads they run. They are pretty friendly about it. Dont get me wrong, its not that I like Dell. Its just that I think they are good for people who dont wish to worry too much. Plus their prices are relatively cheap. Just remmember with your computer to not like run too many programs. Just run one or two program at a time and remember to shut it down if you are not using it. For example, dont have too many internet explorer or whatever browser you use open. Look at your system tray( the one on the lower right hand corner with all the icons), and see if you are using all those programs. If not try to shut it down. This will save a lot of memory for use to things that you want. Good luck wit your new purchase

Congrats IDDQ, on the future new purchase! We are pretty excited with it, and I'm glad to know that you think it will exceed what we actually need. I'm on of those people that will constantly go into my settings and files and stuff, and start erasing files out of there b/c i'm afraid they are taking up 'too much space'. We got a damn monopoly game on the back of a cereal box, from AOL (i didn't sign up with them but was using the game) and when I went in and check my files it said something about taking up 40 kb's or mb's or something..LOL...so I erased it...LOL. But now I have candyland on there (from the back of another box) and i'm keeping that one even tho it's taking up the same amount....=) I guess that's the webtv in me, always worried about everything running slow, b/c I have too much saved...LOL.
LOL Electro- I had it at MSNTV for about 6-7 months maybe..But it's ok cuz now I get my webtv connection for free b/c I have msn...=)
