I'm watching a falcon (I think it's a peregrine) fuck with the jays in my yard. He (or she?) has been coming around most mornings for the past few weeks. About a dozen jays will gang up on him, but they're afraid to get too close. They're about the same size, the falcon and the jays. The falcon's a little bigger, but not much. I think he's waiting to get one of the jays from behind. Either that or he's just playing, because I've never seen him actually take one down.
He'll kick back in a tree and wait for the jays to go back to scrounging for acorns. When he spots one who's not paying attention, he'll suddenly swoop down on it. All hell breaks out because at least one of the other jays is keeping an eye out and sounds the alarm. The falcon chases the jay for a few seconds with the rest of the pack trailing behind, squawking like a lunchroom full of Vietnamese production workers. Sometimes he'll rough the jay up a little, but never enough to hurt it. At least not yet. Then he leads the pack on a merry chase.
God damn can that bird fly! He's as maneuverable as a bat and way faster. He could leave the jays behind in a second if he wanted to. Instead he flies tight little figure eights or circles in and around the trees until the jays are going in all different directions, flying into each other and shit. It's like watching the cops try and catch Burt Reynolds in one of those old Smokey and the Bandit movies.
