Scarlet sits in the growing gloom of her bedroom listening to the freeway. The cars sound like a river, a river of life that's passing her by, day after day, night after lonely night. Everyone has places to go, people to see, things to do, but not Scarlet. She's all alone.
A sudden banging on the door interrupts her miseration. "Scary!" shouts her mother. "You still haven't cleaned the bathroom. The wastebasket is full of Kotex and the toilet smells like dried-on piss. Get your lazy butt out her. NOW!"
Scarlet moans and hugs herself. Her mother doesn't understand her. No one does. How can they? "Okay Mom. I will." Now leave me alone.
A tiny flapping draws her attention to the window. A moth flutters against the glass pane in a futile effort to escape the darkened room for the streetlight outside. It doesn't understand what's holding it back, why it can't fly free. Scarlet thinks of her own spirit, trapped by some invisible force she can't comprehend.
With a heavy sigh she breaks free of her rigor mortis and lights the candle on her dresser. Its sweet scent fills the dingy room.
The moth, however, prefers the streetlight to the candle. So she shuts the blinds, carefully shooing the fluttering insect away from the window. Then she undresses and retrieves a razorblade from beneath the stack of black panties in the dresser drawer. Standing naked before the mirror on the dresser, her hand poised at her milky breast, the blade cold against her erect nipple, she listens to the moth fluttering behind her in the darkness.
She stiffens as the moth makes a first pass at the flame. Catching her breath, she presses one corner of the blade into her smooth skin. The moth passes again, lower this time. She draws the blade across her breast, watching her blood ooze from the scratch that trails it. Pressing harder, she slides it down across her belly to her pubic hair. She wipes the blood with the fingers of her left hand, then presses them to her lips as the moth flies tight, crazy circles around the candle. Outside, the river of life rushes by faster than ever.
Suddenly the moth flies directly above the candle. An acrid smell fills the air and the moth falls to the dresser, flapping helplessly. Tears fill Scarlet's eyes as she draws the blade up her inner thigh, stopping at her wet and swollen pussy. Blood trickles slowly past her knee, tickles her calf. With her blood and saliva moistened fingers she gently rubs her clitoris, imagining a half-man, half-goat monster with a huge cock raping her atop a pile of horse manure in a filthy stable at night before a crowd of drunken, torch-bearing peasants.
There's a problem. The moth can no longer fly. It crawls across the surface of the dresser and falls to the carpet. With a little gasp of frustration, Scarlet sets the razor blade down and captures the moth in her hand. Holding it by its one intact wing, she puts it in the flame. It flares up and sizzles. The acrid smell grows much stronger. She drops the moth's blackened remains into the little pool of wax atop the candle. Her melancholy returns. Tears fill her eyes as she contemplates the poor creature's demise, its only mistake that of striving for the light.
Retrieving the razor blade, she draws another long, slow slice from breast to knee, rubbing herself to bloody orgasm as she does.
