The loneliness that had engulfed her had come from within. No matter what he did, nothing was enough. She would lie in bed and cry for no reason other than it was a Tuesday afternoon and there was a slight wind.

He couldn't understand her sadness any longer. His own sorrows kept him from seeing past his own nose and into the eyes of the woman he once loved. Did he ever really love her? Her beauty betrayed a terrible struggle between a bright and loving woman and a dark and vengeful creature that no one else seemed to see.

It was like she was a vessel and no matter how hard he tried, he could never fill it. There was a hole in her where she used to be and should be but is not. Incomplete. Never whole.

She felt his distance and blamed herself for it. Blame upon blame. The guilt of two people began to overwhelm her senses. She had lost the love she had once felt from him in the empty space within her. If he had looked into her eyes, she wouldn't have been there.

She began talking to the boy at night. He would appear at the foot of their bed and smile slightly at her. She took some comfort in the delusion.

"Are you our son?" She asked, hoping that the distance between them would be crossed.

The boy wouldn't say. But he seemed to fill the space that stretched between them in their bed, him on one side and her on the other and the boy sitting between them.

He would hear their conversations sometimes and wonder if she really was crazy. He needed to escape. She was consuming him and suffocating out the last of his strength. But if he did, she may realize how he had used her to fulfill his needs when times were good and the feelings were conveniently aligned. She knew too much. Anger was the last thing he wanted because it would cost him everything.

The boy would whisper secrets to her. He had his innocent eyes that she adored. They weren't the jaded and hurt-filled orbs that she had come to live with.

The day he couldn't take her tears any longer was the anniversary of his father's death.

She fell asleep on the couch but awoke in the bed.

But the boy didn't fade.

It was then that she realized it wasn't their son but the ghost of his childhood, the one he lost so long ago.

She broke him and he broke her.

The boy at the edge of the bed picked up the pieces and finished the puzzle. They were never whole together and apart they're less than halves. Not whole. Not complete.

Wholeness and completeness are two different things in the in-between.

P.S.

I was tired of my lady, we'd been together too long.
Like a worn-out recording, of a favorite song.
So while she lay there sleeping, I read the paper in bed.
And in the personals column, there was this letter I read:

"If you like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
If you're not into yoga, if you have half-a-brain.
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape.
I'm the lady you've looked for, write to me, and escape."

I didn't think about my lady, I know that sounds kind of mean.
But me and my old lady, had fallen into the same old dull routine.
So I wrote to the paper, took out a personal ad.
And though I'm nobody's poet, I thought it wasn't half-bad.

"Yes, I like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
I'm not much into health food, I am into champagne.
I've got to meet you by tomorrow noon, and cut through all this red tape.
At a bar called O'Malley's, where we'll plan our escape."

So I waited with high hopes, then she walked in the place.
I knew her smile in an instant, I knew the curve of her face.
It was my own lovely lady, and she said, "Oh, it's you."
And we laughed for a moment, and I said, "I never knew"..

"That you liked Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
And the feel of the ocean, and the taste of champagne.
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape.
You're the love that I've looked for, come with me, and escape."

"If you like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
If you're not into yoga, if you have half-a-brain.
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape.
You're the love that I've looked for, come with me, and escape."
