Hello kids and welcome to the first in what hopes to be a very informative ongoing series entitled "How To Find That Annoying Little Fucker On The Internet". Because the only thing more pretentious than a verbose title is an excessively long abbreviation. HTFTALFOTI:P1 bitches.
Today we talk about the WHOIS query/response protocol. The WHOIS query/response protocol (referred to as WhoIs going forward) is most commonly used for querying an official database in order to determine the owner of a domain name, an IP address, or autonomous system number on the Internet. In short, you can usually find out the name, address, phone number, and email adress of a given domain's registrant (the person or company that registered the domain/website address), administrative contact, technical contact, the company with which the domain was registered (also known as a registrar (ex. GoDaddy.com)), and the servers on which the domain and domain services are physically hosted (examples include NS4.ZONEEDIT.COM and NS18.ZONEEDIT.COM).
So, how does you the layman go about using this marvelous wonder of the internet? Mind you, it is not a toy. You must be careful about how and why you're using it, or it could land you in some serious trouble (say hi to shitfuck for me). Tip of the trade: cover your ass, and don't do anything you wouldn't want done to you.
Now that we're through the niceties (See: Disclaimer and Waiver of Responsibilities of the Poster and Ubersite), you'll need to find a website that offers a WhoIs lookup. A quick google search of "whois lookup" will net you a plethora of viable options. The best one is usually second or third (after the yellow box at the top of your results) on the list, but you may need to try a few out until you find the one that best suits your needs. In this case, I've gone with http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp due to ease of use, lack of ads (pop up and banner), and simply because I fucking feel like it.
From there, the WhoIs lookup will either ask you for an IP address (such as 216.98.141.250), or a domain name (thatannoyinglittlefucker.com, google.com, etc). Typically the domain name is where the money is at. With this helpful little primer, there's no limit to the knowledge you can discover on your own.
Impress your friends, dazzle your coworkers, astound your family. Or just fuck off. The choice is yours!
And for a more technical article thrown together by an infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of keyboards, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whois

Dear toe,
You are an internet nerd. Just not a useful one.

Peh, a useful internet nerd? no point in dating them, dear hadley, they spend all their time in front of a computer. In that regard I am quite happy to be useless.

Dear toe,
You are an internet nerd. Just not a useful one.
Love
Hadley
Also, whois is only useful if they own their own domain AND registered it in their own name....which basically no one does. No one smart anyway.

I'm going Zero. Yes this works for domain names but that is rarely the way to look up annoying little fuckers. There is ways though. Yes, I work in IT.
I actually locked a kid out of his XBOX live account the otherday. I don't even have one but he was spammng my friend so he's going to have fun figuring out my grandmothers maiden name to get back in.
