This is a post mainly for Republicans.
Let's assumes Obama wins in a landslide, and does an average job for the next four years. I think both events are possible. Obama is competant or at least intelligent, but he is not a miracle worker. And the next president will spend half, if not his entire term cleaning up the giant turd that is the economy. So 2012 will be a competitive race instead of re-election being a foregone conclusion.
I would like your views on two issues.
1) Do you think that Lieberman and a more positive campaign would have helped McCain? Will the loss of the religious, "NOBAMA IS A MUSLIM TERRORIST" base be made up for by attracting more independents?
2) Where will the Republican party go from here if 08 does turn out to be a disaster? The way I see it, they have three paths:
- Business as usual, in which case 2012 will truly be a referrendum on Obama.
- A radical shift towards the lowest common denominator, the religious right. Full blown 'culture war' style campaigning based on gays and abortion, led by the likes of Palin and Huckabee.
- A rejection of the religious base and instead adopting a platform concentrating on the economy and foreign policy.
The reason I'm asking is because I consider myself an indepedent. But I am above all a social liberal. As long as the Republican candidate continues to run on "faith-based" (read: anti-choice, anti-gay, anti-sex, anti-science) platforms, they will not have my vote. I think these issues should be resolved at home, not in elections. The current situation is a shame, because I think both parties have produced great presidents in the past. I would like to actually have another viable party to vote for instead of staying home if the democrats produce a douchebag candidate.
What do you think?

there were a lot of people rooting for Ron Paul even though i knew he was too intelligent, rational, articulate, and had too much common sense for the Republicans to accept him. if Obama turns out to be a disaster, i wonder if Ron Paul has a chance next time? probably not, but one can dream...

i'm just waiting for all the old people to die so that all the progressive young people grow up and start voting for independents and Libertarians. the two party system sucks ass.

My psychotic friend Andy said today that America is overdue for the election of someone who will do something so monumentally stupid as to require a new government. While either candidate might fit the description, I suspect Obama is a lot closer to jumping off that cliff than McCain.

Bush already gave us this. You mean it will happen again?

Overdue? Really? Does this thing have a five-year cycle?

As we continue forward, the evolution of our society will only drift more and more towards the left. If Republicans don't want to adapt more towards the middle, they will become irrelevant.

I gotta be honest, I'd keep doing these shitty posts too since the only positive posts you have EVER done have been "witty political commentary!"
You're a half-trick pony.
