Flat maps confuse me... You can't tell how big a country is looking at a flat map...

There are maps designed to show the exact size of an area, but then distance between points is different. Because the Earth is 3D and we're moving along the curve of the sphere, reducing the surface to two dimensions necessarily misrepresents either the size of areas or the distance between points. Distance-correct maps make areas in the north and south inflated. I think the maps we usually see tend to balance the two factors.
