LAst point... Remember 1976? Democrat Jimmy Darter gained office mainly on saying he wasn't Gerald Ford and he'd bring down high gasoline prices. It took him only about two years with a Dem-controlled House and Senate to demolish the economy so badly it took almost 20 years to recover. This new generation of voters has no memory of these events; even Obama himself was not old to vote at that time. History was made yesterday when Obama was elected, and history is poised to repeat itself

i was just stating facts about california skrap, and about your generalizations versus the reality i am living. i guess you don't have an answer. the seventies have nothing to do with the fact that what you said was pretty off the mark and mildly offensive to an extremely hard working, extremely high taxpaying blue state city slicker such as myself. that was my point.

Experima and FilledWithHate - I'm done with politics for now. We shall wait, and we shall see. If I'm wrong, fine. But just for fun, ask your parents about the 1974-1978 period in the soon-to-be-repeating history, and then ask yourself why I'm out of the market and buying land.

Fair enough, and land might be a good idea no matter what happens.
I am about your age, btw, and while I was young, I remember 1974-78. I had a pet rock, or some shite like that.

Skraps wild predictions are delusional and based on endless falsehoods and bizarre assumptions.
These are all wildly speculative ideas that are never coming to pass. The government does not own 80% of banks, tax rates are marginal (so you are always better off making more), the government will not be giving any "stipend", assumptions about what the Democrats "want" supposedly proven by voting demographics are silly. San Francisco probably went 80-90% for Obama; you think we are so poor and welfare bound? I practically spat on my salmon crepe and martini dinner.
The previous adminstration has run the country into bankruptcy anyway. The well ran dry already; we don't need Obama's imaginary "largesse" to do it for us. Been done.
Joe the Plumber called; he wants his knuckle-dragging simplifications back.

i have no idea why we're in iraq. i don't like that we're in iraq. what is your point? i said "we might" leave iraq.
obama has expressed interest in withdrawal. that would be a major change, yes? yes
=================================
The Iraqis want us out; that is why they won't sign the current forces agreement proposed by the Bush adminstration. This will still be unsigned by the time Obama takes office. Obama just has to go in, agree to the Iraqi proposed timeline for withdrawal, and sign. In a staged withdrawal, ongoing costs could be cut in half in 6 months to 1 year, and to nothing in 2-3 years. This is by far the most likely scenario.

so skrap, did you think the votards, as you call them, did the right thing in electing george bush, who has demolished the economy and created a massive deficit from a surplus, presided over a phenomenal government expansion, eroded states' rights in the process, and thrown all those decent, hard-working taxpayers' money overseas into a quagmire in iraq and a trade deficit with china, all while huge amounts of taxpayers have lost their jobs in the hinterlands, factories have closed and they have been forced onto government assistance?
i live in a blue state in a metropolitan area. i see major rush hour traffic every morning, people heading to skyscrapers and office buildings to work. i take some degree of offense to your overgeneralization of the people in the cities sucking on the government's teat. The people in the hinterlands in my state seem to be working at truck stops and McDonald's and tire stores and gas stations, seriously. I don't see them as super ambitious go getters striving to top $200 grand a year. Quite the opposite, really, how your sweeping generalization characterizes people here in California. Between San Diego and Los Angeles and San Francisco, Silicon Valley, the wine country, the beach cities, etc. I'd say what makes this one of the WORLD'S LARGEST ECONOMIES are the densely populated areas where business and commerce and innovation take place.
Barstow and Needles aren't really doing it for us, and I'd go out on a limb and say there are welfare people and food stamp people left and right there. But that's not your problem. California's economy takes care of a lot of Americans. There are more people in 'the heartland' who hate California who are more than willing to suck off our teat. Are California's poor getting more money from Louisiana or Alaska, or vice versa?
I just get tired of hearing about all these noble people in "real america" when I just worked 165 hours over the past two weeks and just because I live in LA in the city, I'm a freeloader?

Heard about the National Infrastructure Bank? It's a fund in which Obama will magically create $60B to rebuild roads and bridges. Kinda like the TVA projects in the 20s that we paid for by the newly-levied Federal Income Tax. But Obama wants to raise taxes only on incomes over $200K (that number was $250K before the election, remember?)

These are Florida and Indiana, but it is a typical distribution of votes for traditionally conservative states that went with Obama. Note the significantly larger numbers of counties in red, with blue around the population centers. Know who lives in the hinterlands? More people who produce and contribute than people who take from the system. The population centers are where the majority of people living on the government tit are located. It is where most of the hinterland's taxpayer's money goes. Those people got Obama into office, not the people who produce and contribute.
Heard about the National Infrastructure Bank? It's a fund in which Obama will magically create $60B to rebuild roads and bridges. Kinda like the TVA projects in the 20s that we paid for by the newly-levied Federal Income Tax. But Obama wants to raise taxes only on incomes over $200K (that number was $250K before the election, remember?) so that magic $60B has to come from those people and from businesses. But his tax increases arent enough to cover it and all the rest of the programs all his votards think they deserve, so guess what? Businesses and service providers will raise prices to cover their increased tax bills and you will pay. Have some money left you want to invest? No matter what you make, when you buy or sell investment you'll pay a transaction tax, and if you happen to make money you'll pay an increased capital gains tax. Still think you're getting a tax break? Think again.
The only way to realize a tax break under Obama's tax plan is to keep your income low and to not invest it outside the bank (which the government now owns 80% of thanks to the Bailout). Know who does that? People without ambition who have been convinced they cannot improve their lot in life through their own efforts. You'll live better in the short term, so if you're stupid you'll believe you're better off, but you'll soon realize that you do not have enough money to retire on so you're again stuck with relying on the government to supply you with a stipend on which to live and healthcare for your aging woes. Who pays for that? Those with initiative enough to try to do better than average and are punished with taxes at every turn for it.
How long do you suppose people like me are going to accept carrying the burden of people who won't make an effort for their own wellbeing? With this election the number of people who depend on the government to meet their needs will increase, for that is what Democrats want and that is what Obama's economic plan entails, while the money to pay for all that government largesse will decrease. Eventually the well runs dry. Then what?

There is some validity to what Caul is saying... People blame Bush for way too much, especially when you had Democrats like Hillary voting for the war, Democrats like Ray Nagin who led the local and state governments that failed during the Katrina disaster, and market bubble crashes during Clinton's term (Dotcom bubble).
Liberals think the presidential office has more control of the economy than it actually does. The Federal Reserve is the indepedent government agency in charge of the economy.

i know the presence will last for a long time. but the 'war' part needs to end. and at least obama wants it to end sooner rather than later. republicans seem to have vested interests in economically profiting from the war that have been openly and unashamedly seen the past several years. that's not base building, that's profiteering at the expense of human life and at the expense of our economy at large. and using taxpayer money, or rather putting american taxpayers in debt to do so, is irresponsible and short sighted. i do hope things change, as do many of us down here...and i'm sure a few of you up there, too. even if it is so we'll stop sewing maple leaves onto our backpacks when we travel.

People were afraid after 9/11, Bush and company did an exceptional job of exploiting that fear with arbitrary bullshit such as terror alerts, etc... While terrorism is nothing new to the rest of the world, it was for America (at least in terms of foreign terrorists). Based on pretenses that Iraq had WMDs and that even if they didn't, Saddam wouldn't hesitate to use biological warfare, people fell for it.
I remember arguing with my Step-Dad about how we shouldn't go to Iraq, I was 16 at the time I believe. He actually yelled at me, "But they took out the two towers!", even Bush wasn't making that claim, I told him. The sad fact is that many people are easily swayed, and incredibly retarded. While I have never thought we should be there, it's not hard to understand why we went, or why anyone supported it. Whether or not it SHOULD make sense is irrelevant.

that's adifference. whether or not it happens isn't the point. it's the sentiments the candidates expressed about it that are dissimilar. and the candidate's personal sentiments are what many base their votes on. whether they can get the government to do anything about it is an entirely different matter of course.
okay whatcha got for me now?

Either of them would have been a new president.

LOL MCCAIN ISNT A NEW PRESIDENT
Now that that joke's been made...
I don't think he means "as opposed to if McCain were elected." I think he means "as opposed to before, where although we knew the next president would be new, we didn't have one picked out yet." Usually when you pick something you can say "now I have a" even though you knew you were going to get something of that category.

obama has expressed interest in withdrawal. that would be a major change, yes? yes.

I agree Jack. I could tolerate Oprah if she would have said even one word in support of a white candidate, but she wouldn't.

Obama's speech, as usual, was excellent, but if I saw one more shot of Oprah I would have puked.
What did like was a shot of a young black guy in his 20s, just staring up at Obama like he was thinking, "Is his real?" Great moment.

the iraq war might come to a close. that would save money and lives. that's a change.
===
obama never said he'd leave right away. he'll leave when it's "reasonable" to do so...which means, when military ppl tell him it's ok to leave. basically, the same plan Bush or McBush had.
besides, wtf are you doing in iraq in the 1st place?

Suck it Jack McCallum, you racist prick, you have a black president.

You are an idiot. Check your facts before making dumbass comments.
I have NEVER said I was against Obama as a President. I think he needs more seasoning, and I'm glad old Joe is here to back him up, but I am not disappointed.
Just keep in mind that very little will CHANGE.
The best thing about this election is that in 40 years we've gone from Cvil Rights marches to a Black President. That is amazing.
