I wasn't alive when the Great Depression ended.
I wasn't alive when the Nazis were defeated.
I wasn't alive to be inspired by RFK/JFK.
I wasn't alive to feel the pain when Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.
I wasn't alive to see the first African-American athletes transcend the norm.
I wasn't alive when the Civil Rights Act was fought for and passed.
I wasn't alive to see the first man step foot on the Moon.
I wasn't alive to see Jimi Hendrix play the Star Spangled Banner.
I was alive this morning.
Today is the proudest I've ever felt in my life.
Today I learned that anything is possible...

I did vote for Obama, but I almost wrote in my dog. This election was no different from any other, you won't see any change beyond some pretty minor economic reforms.
There will be about as much change after he gets in office as you get for a $4.99 pack of cigarettes when you give the cashier $5.00. Which is to say, not all that much. Being an anarchist is always disappointing. Good night.

"In a perfect world, my mom would not have had me. BUT she did. so here i am. i have needs. it's not my fault is it? i have not made the same mistakes but i had many struggles to overcome. i used to be a firm believer in trickle-down capitalism. but it just doesnt work. When Preston Williams III gets a tax advantage, more profits, or capital gains, he usually buys a bigger yacht than his neighbor Bryce Johnson IV. I have zero faith that Preston Williams III goes out and purchases health-insurance for LaTosha Jackson, a woman that also may have been born to a bad situation that she never asked for. WE have to start looking out for each other, and not just for number one. Surely helping our fellow human is more important than yacht size?"
My name is Bryce Johnson IV and I approve this message.

I'm starting to get really pissed. All I'm reading in the news is how America has elected its first BLACK president.
HE'S NOT 100% "BLACK" WHATEVER THE FUCK THAT MEANS!
Like it or not, he's half white."
It doesn't matter whether he's black or white, what matters is that Americans BELIEVED they elected a black man. Black and white aren't really a race (everyone is mixed anyway), they're more of an idea, a representation of something.

Yes, but this time the non-racists are in the government and not the racists.

oh man, i'm TOTALLY disappointed in Obama already and he's not even in the White House yet! i stopped at a gas station to fill up my car and when the attendant told me i owed him 40 bucks, i told him not to worry about it because Obama was going to take care of it. but GUESS WHAT? he TOTALLY made me PAY FOR IT MYSELF.
even worse, my mortgage was due and i told the bank to send a check to the White House and they said i had to pay for it MYSELF or else they would take my home away! what kind of BULLSHIT is that?

That's like telling a chick you're gonna cut her balls off. It doesn't apply.
Well, okay, if you are in San Francisco on the edge of the Tenderloin, down near Geary and Larkin, and you're about to get a hummer in one of those dark greasy alleys and you reach under that spandex dress and feel junk that IS NOT supposed to be there, then you could tell a chick you're gonna cut her balls off.
Or so I've heard.

i know you aren't actually calling me stupid, man. i was really just trying to put you in the hot seat. the only thing that bothers me about what you said is your fatalist way of thinking. no one knows what's going to happen in the next 4 years. let's try to be calm and rational about this and just wait and see. i just don't see the point to all the people claiming that we're doomed and this country has come to an end just because Obama was elected. some people really believe that we're going to replace the stars on the flag with a sickle and hammer or something. chill, people. you're allowed to be upset that your candidate didn't win and i expect a lot of anger to come out immediately following the election, but i really hope it tapers off and people start to think more clearly and say "let's give this guy a chance". i gave Bush a chance and he didn't do so well. but i don't hate the guy. in fact, he has kind of grown on me. i can't hate the guy for doing a bad job when i believe he didn't have any bad intentions.

When I stepped into the booth I really didn't know which way I was going to vote but it wasn't a tossup between McCain and Obama....it was between Obama and Third Party.
Fact is that deciding between Obama and McCain made itself out to be an easy decision. Politics and policy aside how was a man conducted himself while I've been aware of him.

I'm glad that you're happy and hopeful. I am too. And in many of the arguments below, you can't win. Just because you celebrate a milestone in the diversity of the country (which it IS, no matter to what degree or what importance anyone here wants to assign it) Just because you're inspired by someone doesn't mean you expect them to take care of you. Just because you recognize you or those around you were less fortunate or had less advantages than you doesn't mean you need to assign blame, or that you wouldn't find motivation to succeed within yourself.
Feel good. You're allowed to. And don't let anyone take that away from you, if only for today.

I won't get into the other things you brought up until we get past this first issue.
your 'need' to assign fault is what bothers....you feel you were entitled to a different or better beginning to life when you weren't. There doesn't have to be someone at fault when situation arises but there does need to be someone that says "this is the situation what am I going to do about it" and then does it. This sense of entitlement is what i view as one of the biggest problems with our country and possibly the world.
No one is owed anything and if you want to trade personal examples of shabby beginnings I'm fairly certain I'll trump you but I never felt that they would hold me down, keep me from doing what I've done.

I'm a white male from the South in the United States. Since I was a kid i've always heard that "the sky is the limit," "achieve your dreams," "anything is possible," etc. However, i always knew that that was a lie, i knew that there was a class system in this country whether we admit it or not. The class system effects us all, predominantly African-Americans, but also poor Whites, Natives, Hispanics, Asians. Today was the first time in my life where i felt that i could say, "Maybe anything really is possible...." I don't see how we cant all feel such a sense of pride and inspiration?
=====================================================

I agree that the fact that a racially mixed person was elected as president of a country that not too long ago was struggling with civil rights issues is very remarkable and hopeful.
I'm just saying that focusing on his "blackness" is as retarded as focusing on this "whiteness."
Immediately the nigger, watermelon, fried chicken, terrorist, jigaboo bullshit started as soon as it was announced he won the election.
So, this country is still racist. Racism is part of human nature, but there does need to come a time when we can evolve past it.
This is just one step. But we couldn't stop calling Palin, Hillary, or any other female politician (whether we agreed with them or not) "bitch" "cunt" or any other derogatory female names.
I'm already getting text messages from some of my more embarrassing aquaintances that basically say "We dun fuk'd up y'all. We let 'em put a nigger in offace [sic]."

forensicgirl3,
I'm a white male from the South in the United States.

I'm starting to get really pissed. All I'm reading in the news is how America has elected its first BLACK president.
HE'S NOT 100% "BLACK" WHATEVER THE FUCK THAT MEANS!
Like it or not, he's half white.
Talking about our "first BLACK president" is as retarded as saying that we elected "a white guy." By their logic, being partially black is the same as being all "black." Therefore, being partially white is the same as being all "white."
OMFG! WE ELECTED A WHITE GUY!
SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY!
