"Listen to me! You have to consider the possibility that God does not like you. He never wanted you. In all probability, he hates you. This is not the worst thing that can happen."—Tyler Durden

Recently, http://www.ubersite.com/m/119632 got me to thinking about past discussions I've had with the religious folks. The seemingly common thread among theists is the belief that god does exist (obviously, otherwise they wouldn't be theists) and that he loves (or is at least keenly interested in) you. I find this latter part to be quite a spectacular leap.

Does god exist? Yes, no, maybe. I don't know. It's certainly not beyond the realm of possibility that something exists out there that humans would consider to be god. Some kind of "prime mover" in Aristotle's words. After all, there's a lot we don't know, and "could be" is a really big place.

But to further suppose that god exists and has some emotion toward humanity (love, hate, etc.), that's where I get lost. I don't see how it follows that god exists, therefore he is interested in us. Why should he be? If he is on a god-level of existence, why should humans even register? What difference could we possibly make to god? Then again, there is a chance god is on more of a direct human-supervisor level. Maybe it's his job to care. But if so, would we really consider such a creature god? At that point, he's just a step above kings and world leaders.

I personally find the ambivalent god model to be quite comforting. It's nice to think that god is out there, but he does have better things to do. It's also reassuring that my actions are not significant enough to anger such a creature. Maybe that's why some people are so angry. They spend their whole life suppressing innate desires for fear of divine retribution. Imagine how thirsty you'd get if you truly believed that drinking water would make an all powerful being really mad at you.

"If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?"

"I'm sorry, and you are?"

Of course to assume god does care, does at least somewhat oblige you to find out what god wants you to do. That's what leads many to religious texts. Bibles and such things do contain some good advice (do unto others, etc), but they also get kinda nutty too (never wear clothes made of more than one fabric). It doesn't make a lot of sense to follow the nutty requirements, but throwing them out does seem arbitrary. After all, maybe that cotton/polyester blend really is pissing off the big guy. And your neighbor who worked on the Sabbath, why haven't you killed him yet?!? How are you to know what really pisses off god and which ones he just threw in there just for fun?

Seems to me that anonymity is the most desirable state.

they'll tell you it doesn't need proof, that faith trumps proof, but if that is the case why all these 'miracles'? Surely one doesn't need them.

Perhaps miracles are god throwing us a bone every now and again.

I think "faith" has to be one of the most misused words out there. It's almost exclusively used as a justification of groundless beliefs.

God wants me to sexitize them ladies.

Seriously though, everyday that passes leaves me more sure than any person who claims that their religion trumps all is a retard. People are boiling down spirituality into something as stupid as sports.

the burden of proof for their ridiculous claims should be on us as rationals to provided.

by that i meant, in english:

the burden of proof for their ridiculous claims should not be on us as rationals to provide.

i was still in character as electro.

also the zero was accidental, i've made a great start today i must say.

my issue with religion is the fact that it is ringfenced from argument and ridicule.

every other myth, unless direct evidence is found, is dismissed and left to wither away.

the burden of proof for their ridiculous claims should be on us as rationals to provided.

On a more personal note, IF there is a god, and IF that god is anything like what most religions say he/she/it is, then god is not worthy to be worshiped.
