Little Ingrid stepped off the ferry, stumbled finding her feet and watched the cars drive down across the ramp and then push up onto the road. She stared at her feet and walked backward up the corrugated bitumen.
Cars passed as she bent and studied the cuffs of her jeans.
She walked up to the headland and sat on its edge, watching as the shadows cut a swath through the waves, chasing them.
"Hi."
Little Ingrid turned and scowled, "What are you doing here old man."
"Not too much, I was going to surf but you get a birds-eye view from up here don't you? They're bullsharks. Hunt in packs you know, tore a girl limb from limb here a way back."
"I think I've heard the story."
The man sighed.
"Silly girl...unfortunate but the local council had put signs up and she went swimming at dusk, still it's a terrible shame. You know a guy went in after her to try and drag her out and was awarded a bravery medal? Amazing. Not the medal him going in, too little too late but that's really something, to just go wading into a pool of blood when she was gone anyway."
Little Ingrid thought about the man that did that, smiled, studying the sea horse pattern the sand had possibly left on her emo jeans.
"I heard he named his daughter after her" she muttered, scraping the sand from black denim.
"Yes he did. Imagine walking into a feeding frenzy with your pregnant wife on the beach just to save a girl that was already dead."
"Did you know him?" Little Ingrid asked, looking away across the heat-hazed horizon.
The man followed her gaze. "I wish I could have known somebody that brave, we all want to be stronger or at least know somebody who is. He was an Islander apparently, and she was a jehovah's witness or something - it was all very good samaritan in the long run but amounted to shit."
Little Ingrid stood and curled her toes around the earthy edge of the headland.
"It's a shame" she whispered, "I would've liked you to have been that man or at least known him."
The man looked up, watched as Little Ingrid lifted her arms in a swan dive pose not a crucifix and turned away and waited. "I wish that too."
Ingrid fell, listening to the man and the wind, and the fire.
