Marriage is a religious ceremony right?
Always has been?
Need a Priest to get you married?
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Marriage is a religious ceremony and according to that little blurb you can't stop someone from exercising their religion.
PERIOD
The First Amendment is the absolute nail in the coffin for any anti gay marriage law short of a federal constitutional amendment.
So much for Prop 8
If the gay rights crowd wanna win this thing they need to get a gay priest to start marrying gay people.
That a straight white southern gun totin redneck thought this up just amazes me.

well, i wouldn't waste too much of your time talking about it. you can't present a logical argument to someone that believes in something completely illogical.
there's a million contradictions in religion that would make a rational person stop and say "hmmmm, maybe this god was really thought up by humans" but then you always have those things like "faith" that have no counter-argument that allows someone that works off emotion rather than reason to have your logical, reasonable argument go in one ear and out the other.

I can't see it doing the divorce rate any favours, but let them have their fun. I think the Church has the right not to perform the ceremony, though. They should be happy with the registery office.

Gay marriage is stupid.
Marriage is between man and woman, changing it to man and man or woman and woman is just as stupid as a man saying he wants to be legally know as the "mother" of a child.
While I think it is stupid for two butt pirates to pretend marriage means they will hang out with each other instead of at glory holes, they should still have the same rights as othe rpeople. So, for the record if I was in claifornia I would have voted against prop 8, because as it is "civil unions" don't have the same legal protection or nationwide recognition as marriages.

The fact that you call it "marriage" is what constitutes it to the laws or thoughts of the church process. Because it is a church or private sect event. To take what is a religious motive and try to change it is insulting to the institution that is using it,
How about you don't call it marriage. Or else just don't take the Christian ideals, or else make up your own religion. It can be just like Christianity but not called Christianity.
What do you think the Protestants did to the Catholics? Martin Luther and all that. I mean think for a second.
If you guys want to get married why must you try and change the very values of the Christian church? Why are people so boundless? You want to make something that has been demonized by a church and a people ok?

Marriage is a religious concept, civil unions are a legal concept. Gays should not fight for the right to 'marry', they should fight for the right to a 'civil union'. It'd be much more effective.

When a man and a woman get married in a church, they're married. Until they've signed the grossly misnamed Marriage Certificate from their state, however, they have no civil union. It is the civil union that allows them to share insurance benefits, inherit property, combine their incomes for tax purposes, adopt children as a couple, and sue for alimony when it all goes to shit. NOT the marriage.
Leave marriage to the religions and you'll probably find less resistance to 'civil unions'. Rename the legal document to "Civil Union Certificate" and let any couples of legal age who want one have it.
So, who wants to join the Civil Unions Now Team?

It's also a violation of the constitutional protection of contracts(14th ammendment I think) as other states can't create laws that refuse to recognize legal contracts in another state.

There are no logical arguments that prove society will be harmed if gays are allowed to marry.
Also, didn't Arkansas also pass a law that limits adoption of children to married couples only? They probably did this because they figure it's the best way to keep gays from adopting.
Way to sacrifice the children, Arkansas.
Not only did you possibly deny a child a loving, gay couple home, you also denied a child a loving, one-parent home.

They want to give marraige a legal definition that is 'between a man and a woman'.
The gov't doesn't see marriage as a sacred institution.
Thus your point is null and void.
