The third round of the THird Ubersite Poetry ExtrAvaganza has brought to light a very important question:
What exactly is poetry?
One definition says "Poetry is an imaginative awareness of experience expressed through meaning, sound, and rhythmic language choices so as to evoke an emotional response. Poetry has been known to employ meter and rhyme, but this is by no means necessary. Poetry is an ancient form that has gone through numerous and drastic reinvention over time. The very nature of poetry as an authentic and individual mode of expression makes it nearly impossible to define."
Mrs. Dowling says "Poetry is difficult to define. More than any other type of writing it involves our feelings. It takes many forms and has many purposes."
Here is another definition of poetry: It is language that says more than ordinary language, and says it more intensely than ordinary language. It uses figures of speech. Each figure of speech suggests several meanings with only a few words. Poetry uses many words with strong connotations. These words appeal to the reader's emotions. The language of poetry is strong.
Ubersite's own Shlongy sums it up pretty succinctly:
"Poetry sucks."
All I know is that I am in no place to judge whether something like, "Merry Christmas, HO HO Rabbit!" is poetry or not. One could very easily argue that it is. Unfortunately Muddy, this means you will be moving onto round three. As for the rest of the field, most went uncontested. I had expected this, being the holiday season; and as it turns out I myself am actually on vacation right now, so I am sorry Scourge that I could not respond to your numerous inquiries with the promptness they deserve. I shall strive to do better from here on out.
Since Shadow and Snagglepuss have identical ratings, I switched Muddy with Snagglepuss to avoid an immediate rematch. Below are your matches for the big quarterfinal round. I expect some fantastic work! Good luck and happy lyricising! (Is that a word? It should be.)

well, i guess you could say he is better at poetry than fiction, bubba. you can pass off all the 'elebentybillion' grammatical and typographical errors that his writing is usually littered with as 'poetic license.'

i made golden potato chowder. feta and roasted peppers and fingerling potatoes and cream and chives... fuck it's good. i'll drink beer with it.

By the way, I finally tried watching the 12th Night thing. I made it through 20 minutes (barely); then, I opted for a satisfying poop and Family Guy reruns.

If this had been placed more in the........late summer, say, I probably would have had the time to fully participate more. The holiday season is a horrible time for contests, becuase people are stressed out already, and time is ALWAYS in short supply.
I propose another similar poetry style competition in that time of year.
