The last time I was conscious of the time before falling asleep and having a horribly introspective dream, it was 1:55am. I couldn't have nodded off more than 10 minutes later, but who can say?

It began with me, at my current age of 26, walking down a staircase of my 8th grade school.

The halls were empty, and everything seemed a bit darker than it should be. It was almost as if I were in one of those old silent movies that you'd watch through a projector, and yet that's not quite right.. more like being able to carry about my ways inside a black and white photograph. There was no humming of the fluorescent lights (which produced a brighter shade of gray light), no muffled voices of children or teachers in the classrooms (of which all the doors were closed), no sound at all. There was no wind upon my face as I walked towards the staircase, and if my hair bounced or got loose from where I keep it behind my ears, I wasn't aware of it.

There was only me, walking very slowly down a couple flights of stairs. The kind of staircase where you'd go down 12 or 15 steps, then reach a platform, turn the corner, and go down another 12 or 15 steps in the opposite direction. But I was moving very slowly. I recall using the hand-rail and getting both feet on each step, and then pausing for a moment before I would repeat this process. It is possible that in this dream, I had no idea where I was heading to, and therefore felt in no particular rush to get there.. but I now think that a voice even deeper in my sub-conscious was trying to tell me something.. Trying to tell me that I was dreaming.

And just like that, I was aware of it. Here I am stuck in a black and white still of days long past, suddenly aware of that fact that I am dreaming.

(I should mention that I stumbled upon an article about lucid dreaming a couple weeks back, but (at least on the surface of my sub-conscious) I didn't really put much thought into it, if you'll excuse the pun.)

Once I became aware that I was dreaming, I tried to remain calm, so as not to excite myself too much and wake myself up, if that's even possible. But still, in this picture there was no one around to share the good news with anyways, so I decided to try and have a little fun.

The first thing I did was decide that I was bored with walking down the stairs, so I decided that I wanted to levitate down them. What kind of person am I? The first thing I think about doing, after realizing I have control of my actions in a world where anything is possible, is lifting myself about 4 inches off the ground and hover down the stairs? What am I even doing at this school in the first place?

These thoughts run through my head quite literally of course, as well as in my dream. I reached the platform at the bottom of the particular section of stairs I was on and looked over the railing. It was only then that I realized that this staircase goes on beyond infinite sight. When I look up, I see the same thing. No more fluorescent lights or classroom doors, just me stuck in a staircase glass that's either half empty or half full. For a brief moment I panic, felling trapped in a pessimist's hell.

After this briefest of moments, I regain my composure and come back to the realization that I'm dreaming. For reasons I can't explain, I hunkered down flat-footed, with my forearms resting on my knees out in front of me with palms down, closed my eyes and jumped.

When I opened my eyes again, I was floating comfortably with the breeze under the midnight moon, altitude: 20 feet. I remember I was floating around my hometown (where I no longer reside).. and again, no particular destination in mind, just kind of along for the ride, seeing the sights, goin' with the flow. I'm not sure if something happened at this particular time in my dream, but it seems to me that out of nowhere I wasn't in my town anymore, it was kind of like time softened. What it really felt like was that someone was watching this whole thing happen to me on their VCR, then decided to fast forward through this part. When time hardened, I was still floating through the air comfortably at 20 feet, but I was moving a little quicker now, even though there wasn't a change of wind, so far as I can recall.

I had no idea where I was at first, but then I saw a house I recognized. Her house.

No lights were on, there were no cars at all (on the road or in anyone's driveway), but I knew she was home sleeping.

First the empty school, then floating around town and seeing no cars, no lights, no activity, just blissful silence.. blissful, at least, until I realized that I wasn't alone in here.

She was the only other person in this entire black and white photograph of a world I had created for myself. I couldn't see her yet but I knew it to be true.

As if the wind was somehow being funneled, or guided, I started getting closer to her house. I don't know why I felt like I couldn't just pass through the walls as easily as I escaped the staircase hell, but the window was open (the only open window on the street) and I felt like that was my only way in.

I experienced another brief moment of panic as I approached the window. I was just out of arms reach, and I had no control of the direction in which I was floating. In a last desparate effort, I reached out with both arms in superman fashion and was surprised to see that I was able to get a hold of the sill.

Once inside her room I was able to ground myself. I stood there awkwardly for a few moments. The thing about conscious dreaming, kids, is that just because you feel like you have some 'control' over your surroundings and your own actions, it doesn't mean that you can sit there and brainstorm things you want to do. Time still passes, whether soft or hard, and in that time you are able to make a few decisions in your dream.. but in the end its still like being in a sailboat: All you can do is steer yourself in the right direction and hope to avoid the rip.

I stood there and watched her sleep. There wasn't anything weird or creepy about it. I fell into some sort of trance, sort of just frozen in place, as I watched the sheets rise and fall as she breathed, and I felt compelled to lay next to her.

I sat on the bed beside her leaning on my right arm which was now across her sleeping body.

Before I could fully lay down, I wanted to give her a kiss on the forehead.

I paused briefly, then started to lean in.

As if sensing me having this idea, her eyes snapped open in bewildered shock and she sat upright with a jump. Milliseconds before our heads would have collided (or maybe in the dream they did collide), I woke up with the same feeling of shock. Or maybe it was dread? Either way, I woke up breathing heavily. I took a few deep breaths before I noticed the buzzing sound coming from my desk.

My phone was vibrating.

It was 2:30am.

It was her.

It wasn't her on the phone - it was Earl fuckin' Scruggs. I jumped out the window and landed on my moped and set off to Scrugg's house. When I got there I shoved 7 cigarettes up his ass and began punching his neck. Days later, Kid showed up and filled in for me.

"Man, punching his neck is soothing."

I just lit a cigarette and nodded in agreement.

Eery stuff. My mom, who believes in all sorts of mystical things, would immediately say, "You had an out-of-body experience in your sleep, and you really visited your girlfriend!" Then she would start reading my palms until I slapped her away. Seriously though, I think dreams are fascinating. I experience lucid dreaming all the time; usually if the dream is disturbing or violent, I deliberately stop it. I've never manipulated a dream beyond that, though. Interesting post!

Per http://www.dreammoods.com ...

School: To dream that you are in school, signifies feelings of inadequacy and childhood insecurities that have never been resolved. It may relate to anxieties about performance and abilities. If you are still in school and dream about school, then it will naturally serve as a backdrop to your dream world.

Alternatively, a dream that takes place in school may be a metaphor for the lessons that you are learning from your waking life. You may be going through a "spiritual learning" experience.

To dream that you are looking for a school, suggests that you need to expand your knowledge and learning.

To dream that your childhood school is in ruins, suggests that you are dwelling on some unresolved childhood issue. Alternatively, the dream represents the passage of time. You need to look toward the future instead of reliving the past.

Decending Stairs: To dream that you are walking down a flight of stairs, signifies that you will face many setback in your endeavors.

Jumping: To dream that you are jumping, indicates that you need to take a risk and go for it. You will find progress toward your goals. Consider the metaphors "jumping for joy" or "jumping the gun". How you feel in the dream will provide additional significance and meaning to your dream.

Flying: To dream that you are flying, signifies a sense of freedom where you had initially felt restricted and limited.

Hometown: To dream of your hometown, indicates that you may be experiencing some unexpressed feelings. You may feel that you are not able to fully express your emotions. This could be triggered by a waking situation. The dream could also reflect aspects of yourself that were prominent or developed when you were living in your hometown. There's a dude around here, older guy named Doug, who had his Harley custom painted with Molly Hatchet album artwork.

He's also a bit of a weird dude. I told him a joke once. It was kind of a stupid punny joke, but he laughed until he started choking.

For that matter, sometimes he laughs at literally nothing. He'll be sitting there drinking his beer and he'll just start giggling.

Just one more morning, I have to wake up with the blues
Pull myself outa bed, yeah, pull on my walkin' shoes
Climb up on a hilltop, baby, see what I can see, yeah
The whole world's fallin' down on me, right down in front of me

And I'm hung up upon dreams, I'm never gonna see yet
Lord help me, baby, dreams get the best of me yet

-----

I just thought I'd show how awesome I am by reviewing with song lyrics from an awesome song which should be read with the Allman Bros version in your head and not the Molly Hatchet version even thought the Molly Hatchet version is good too, but Danny Joe Brown is dead as is Duane Allman, but these lyrics were written by Gregg and not Duane and I saw Gregg open up for Stevie Ray Vaughan because I'm so awesome. Or maybe he opened up for Neil Young. Hmmm. Don't remember. No I think that was Tracy Chapman who was way boring. In any case I'm awesome.

I've done that type of semi-controlled lucid dreaming a few times. I call bullshit on her calling you though, I don't believe it.

Here's one I did once, though in pale comparison to yours: http://www.ubersite.com/m/111985

Next time though, try to steer it to "porn-world" if you can. I think I got there once, though who can be sure it was me or my psyche? Either way I remember waking up with the proof in the pudding....on the sheets.

The other day I had one of those weird, ultra-real feeling, afternoon dreams that one usually has while taking an afternoon nap.

I drempt I was JD from Scrubs. Carla wanted to cuddle with me, I was ok with that. We were awaken by Turk coming into the room. I expalined "Dude, it's ok we were just lying together!" "Oh really?" he replied, motioning for me to turn around. I did so, and Carla was standing there in just her underwear.

It's fitting that I was JD. I am that kind of a dork.

Yeah, Carla looked good.

Intense!

Sleep stages are fascinating.

Have you ever heard of Hypnagogia? It occurs between wakefulness and sleep. The brain is busy paralyzing the muscles and getting you ready for deep sleep which occurs before a REM cycle.

But you're not really asleep yet and therefore a person may experience various sensory hallucinations.

Weird shit too.

I think that when people pop up with stories of seeing ghosts or spirits that woke them up, they're actually experiencing a Hypnagogic hallucination.
