There is something about a rainwet day
A mood is cast, that calms in a quiet way,
And whispers the subtle sadness of light and gray.
We are serene on a rainsoft day,
In pensive grace, we think, not say,
And reflect in conscious slumber, hours away:
Windows are woven in watery tapestry,
Delicate rivulets herded by gravity,
Wend and waver in slippery pageantry;
In rippled puddles dance happy birds,
All fluff-and-flutter they prance in mirth,
Looking wet-and-shiny like the day of their birth;
Stealthy cats prowl with damp, matted hair,
Transfixed with primal purpose and intense stare-
Advancing on soft paws, to juicy birds ensnare;
And full-bladdered dogs all cozy inside,
Gaze wistfully at doors forlorn-eyed-
Rather pee floors than have rain touch their hide!
Far-off thunder conjures some prehistoric urge,
Primordial emotions from limbic system surge,
Vague haunting memories- déjà vu- emerge;
It starts distant, doppler-crawling, crackling hollow;
Rolling closer, visceral, vibrating bone and marrow,
Crescendo- the sky explodes- Thor's bellicose bellow;
The opulent gray sky shudders and thunders,
Oxygen, nitrogen freed- the atmosphere sundered-
Such alchemy feeds plants waiting patiently in hunger;
So thunder rumbles, sorcery-born from lightning lace,
As lush-drugged clouds spray into pregnant space
A soporific rain that sedates with fluid embrace;
The world is subdued in solemn grace-
People, dogs, and entropy slow their frantic pace-
With wonder we look skyward, wet-heaven on our face.
Raindrops fall in nostaglic array-
Crystal yet liquid, and hushed in play:
So tranquil is this raingray day.
