That's rule number one that Cliff told me when I first started here.
"We're paid to mop, change the trash bags, and pick up the junk. Not to be someone's therapist. Just stay part of the background and you'll be better off."
Turns out Ole' Cliff was right on about that. The bus station was not the place for conversation. As the only public transport in and out of this shit hole of a town, two types came in here; those with somewhere to go and others with no place to go.
Those going places, blew in an out the doors like the wind. It was the others Cliff was talking about.
We had an old hippy looking guy playing his guitar for tips, the evangelists trying to save souls and the guy that was content to talk to the light posts. The fourth from the end was his favorite from what I could tell.
I first noticed her a few days after I started.
Her silver hair in a bun, wire frame glasses parked half down her nose as people do when the need bifocals, but still peek over top of the lenses. She had a small pocket book clutched in her hands.
I was emptying the trash near her bench; she turned to me and said
"I'm waiting for my Grandson; he went to war to fight the terrorists. He's coming home today."
I smiled and made some comment about her being proud and all that, and went on about my business. It was after a week of seeing her in the same spot; my curiosity was starting to get the better of me. I looked to see if Cliff was around before I made my way over to the bench.
As I got closer I could hear her talking to the young woman that sat down next to her,
"I'm waiting for my Grandson; he went to war to fight the terrorists. He's coming home today."
When the young woman got up I approached her.
My mouth started to form my question when I felt Cliff's hand on my shoulder.
"Every day kid, for the last two years, same bench same spot."
