Dwarfism is probably the only, or at the very least the worst, disability that is harder to bear than by solely what its physical limitations entail because it's probably the only, or at least moreso than any other, disability that entails an accompanying aspect of novelty, shame, humour and mockery. Unlike the blind, the autistic and the Polish, whose lives of unwarranted hardship and inescapable disadvantage illicit only sympathy and the moral support and admiration from the general public, the modern midget, who'd probably demand to be called a "little person", must struggle additionally against the unintentional discrimination and societal implications of his midgetry.
I'm not saying that dwarfism is anywhere even remotely near the worst of possible conditions one could endure, but it is worse than it needs to be solely by the nature of the condition in addition to the condition itself. It's the only disability that attacks the self from two virtually opposite directions: the inability to reach the cereal cupboard as well as sole employment in the entertainment industry.
But I suppose it's a testament to the moral character of midgets that they aren't bitter, angry people, because while this only just occurred to me earlier to day, it must have occurred to every single one of them at least once before the fourth grade. And they endured. In fact, of the very few midgets I've met, none of them were even remotely angry and all were very funny, relatively laid back, casual people. With the exception of one...
When originally thinking of this it struck me how much I would hate to be a midget as the unavoidable aspect of constantly detected, despite never outright displayed bemusement at my person would be like a festering wound that only grew and grew until I couldn't take it. Far from being very image-oriented and an attention hog, I usually dont go out with bed head, smelly, unwashed clothes or without having showered because the milder and nearly unnoticeable the social faux pas is, the more in irks me. It's in fact just that kind of omnipresent, inescapable stigma that would quickly turn me into a recluse and bitter misanthropist.
But the midgets among us seem to not only avoid this but so successfully find victory with its opposite; the utter abandon of concern and free spirited detachment from such frivolous worries that give way to a truly moral character.
So I say glory be to midgets, for truly, they are bigger men than me.
