The Sound of an Idea
----------
The snapping of a twig outside the rock hollow woke up most of the troupe. The largest of the primates moved toward the opening in the bushes to look for predators. Peering into the darkness and looking for movement, he scanned the open area near and far. Nothing. A short while passed, and he heard some commotion near the water. Knowing that meant the hunting beasts were elsewhere for now, he returned to the shelter of the hollow.
In the morning some of the troupe went to forage for food. Leaving with those who would climb for fruit and leaves, last night's watcher became this morning's guard. He noticed a broken twig not far from the opening in the bushes, with large single-toed paw prints all around. The predators had been close to their shelter the night before. He knew the danger that they posed. They had sharp fast claws but were not strong, so they hunted in groups. He and his troupe were strong, capable of tearing the hunters apart, but were without claws or fangs to fight them one on one.
The day's gathering done, the troupe returned to the hollow at sundown. The guardian approached cautiously, looking for telltale signs of predators waiting. Seeing none, he hurried the rest of the primates into the hollow. Remembering the previous night's encounter, he had an idea. As the twilight began to fade, he ventured into the bushes and gathered a few twigs. He spread them out on the ground near their passageway to warn of the approach of dangerous creatures. Then he looked around and made sure there was no immediate threat, and went to the hollow to sleep.
Again the twig snapped, awakening every member of the troupe this time. Several more twigs broke and there were some muffled sounds from outside the opening in the bushes. The largest two primates ran through the bushes and found a group of predators massed and ready to attack! Together they jumped on the closest of the bunch and began to beat him savagely, disregarding the claws that cut them. The others scattered. They dragged the lifeless body into the hollow and, in celebration of defending the hollow, they pulled the predator apart and ate his meat. The claws that had done so much damage to their kind wire placed on a rock high up in the hollow, above the bushes, so the other predators would know that there was no hunting here any more.
The following night at dusk, as the large primate was spreading twigs near the bushes, he saw several of the predators approaching, claws displayed. Yelling to warn the others brought most of the troupe to face the hunters. The predator in the middle of the group made some noises and the rest of them responded by bringing their claws to bear on the primates.
"See, I told you they were getting smart. Kill 'em all. We'll bring the ship here to process 'em for the restaurant. Can't have the prey killing the guests."
