It was something she did -- something she had done -- something that came to pass -- something which involved her, but has no bearing on what is the now and on what is the beautiful and harsh reality -- it was all of those things that brought some time ago sadness.
Sadness came sharply to their eyes. Shame came to the cast of her face. And anger, to his, or hurt; with him, I cannot tell the difference.
But, yes, it was something she had done that made him sit crooked and awkward and distrustful, and slide his eyes away from hers quickly enough to make my heart ache. It was a thing which she could do nothing to repair: it was the Worst Thing of All, (or so I am told).
But, yes! it, too, came to pass with time, and the angry, writhing thing between them gradually slipped away into the past where it belonged.
And now, with this thing gone, I thought that perhaps together they could make an effort to dispose of it properly; twitch the last fold of its shroud away and push it into the trash can. I would do this, for them, and indeed I believed I had.
I wish he would talk. Instead, he has laced his fingers together and leaned his elbows hard on his knees so instead of words there is a long stretch of silence falling between his legs from his lips. And that thing, which has dragged itself bloody and broken from behind the fence, peeks around him at me.
This I know: there is nothing she should like better, not ever, not since she has known him, than to have him curl himself around her, touch her, speak to her, laugh with her, love her, and so now this unforgiving silence twists harder at my heart than any of the cruellest words he could have spoken.
Because again, (or so I am told), it was something she did -- something she had done -- something that came to pass -- that has closed him from her and leaves her cold and shivering and wrapping her arms around herself, shielding herself as best she can against his displeasure, his resentment.
But, no, this time he sought it out himself, to bring it down upon their heads. And no matter what he found, when he went rooting about in the trash can -- really, could you expect it to be any less rank then when it was first thrown in? -- she will not take responsibility for.
But, no; I will take the punishment he will offer to her with my head bowed. To do any less would be to lose him.
And even with that horrible snake thing coiled around you I would like to have you touch me, speak to me, laugh with me, and love me.

So you made out with some dude while high and/or drunk. He'll get over it.
Just don't do that shit again, if he's worth keeping around.

What she did isn't important to the story, it's that there was some commitment to try to forgive and move on, and half the union is unable.
Perhaps she could buy him a cute animal. Or maybe a motorcycle or a sports team.

Sure. Buy me a football team and I'll forgive all. And I don't care a whole lot about football. . .
