Scourge...actually that's awesome advice. I live in a townhouse with a limited amount of yard (my roommate owns it but it's landscaped by the homeowners' association) so I'm not able to grow in my own yard...I've gotta grow 'em at Sico's house...they have a lot of space and won't mow my plants.

My email is astrasoleil.at.gmail.com. :)

with perennial fruit bearing plants that is true, sageroo. but since you are going to be growing from seed or seeds atrts from a local nursery, there is only ever one crop to be had before they die.

if you let these things creep, you are going to get rot, and you are going to get bugs.

we grow everything in raised beds.

for squash and zucchini, i basically have a raised dome of chicken wire built over the structure of the bed. this lets you have access to the underside of the plants and keeps air circulation flowing nicely. another bonus to this is that these kinds of summer squashes don't like their leaves to be wet all that much, they tend to develop powdery mildew. with this, you can water directly under the plant without promoting that dampness.

for tomatoes, i use a different method than most people.

over each of the beds i use for tomatoes i have built a simple structure: a 4x4 set in each end of the bed and a 2x4 attached to the top. sort of like a doorway with a garden bed under it. it's about 6 feet high. over each plant, there is a length of rope hanging down from the 2x4. i train the tomato plant up this.

with tomatoes, you want to practice pinching back suckers. these are the little branches that grow and grow and produce lots of leaves, but no fruit. they are nutrient and water stealers and nothing else. too much work to describe how to identify them from fruit bearing branches, but if you go to youtube there will be ten million videos showing you what i'm talking about.

as far as growing medium, for the two types of plants we are talking about here i use basically an identical blend. this consists of basically one part manure, two parts topsoil OR compost, and about half part sand.

these plants are HUGE eaters and growers, with all that extraneous leaf and vine matter, and will drain every bit of nutrient you give them from the soil. i re-amend the soil in these beds heavily at the beginning of every year and give them a nice refreshment mid season as well.

lettuce, peas, and onions are a lot less hungry than this but like a lot more drainage, so i cut the manure in half and the compost in half, but go a lot heavier on the sand...

oh my.

i'm going on, aren't i?

i should just post this shit and let those who care read it.

sage, if you want advice on growing, give me your email and i'll send you some things i've developed for some other people.

PS: Sico I know you'll get around to reading this...let me know when Radon wants to plant those sunflowers. Also, I will plant you some tomatoes, as long as I can also plant summer squash and zucchini. Keep in mind that the first year crops never grow too well...but I have the magjickal green thumb so we'll see. Just tell E to H@YG.

---

tomatoes and zukes and squash are grown from seed, sage. they are not perennial, so each year harvest would be a first (and only) year crop.
***************************
Yes, but typically they do best from the second year on. I'm aware of how they work, plant wise. You're supposed to plant in late April/early May and they harvest 4-5 months later. But, word on the skreet is that the first year is not as plentiful as other years (also dependant on other factors such as the weather, barring drought, etc.).

Thanks anyway...also, any tips you have for growing them would be awesome. Ive heard that used coffee grounds are an excellent way to grow tomatoes. And I've seen great success using stakes, rather than allowing them to creep on the ground. Any suggestions?
