I believe in Faith. I have faith in things.
I have faith in hope, in love, in freedom, in the future.
Theology is the study of humanity's spirituality. Faith is what an individual has. Religion is what occurs when multiple people of a like-minded faith congregate together to set up regulations for their beliefs. While still a precarious thing, faith is acceptable as long as it's kept in check by logic. Religion, however, should be met with little more than disdain and scorn.
Faith can easily be twisted, mutated into something impure and devastating. Faith should be a personal, private thing. It's one thing to discuss faith in a rational manner, it's another thing entirely to thrive upon it. There are individuals that make faith the cornerstone of their daily life, use it as the building blocks of their existence. Not only is this ultimately unsound, but it is particularly dangerous. It is most commonly these individuals who feel an overwhelming need for faith to envelope a large measure of their life that supports the debilitating concept of religion.
That these individuals choose to live in such a state, that they desire their very personal identity invalidated by religion, makes me question their motives as a whole. Why would any sane human being find comfort in an invisible entity watching them at all times, judging their thoughts and actions? Can we then make the argument that all people of a religious following are best by lunacy? No, I think it's something more malignant than that.
Let us look at the two main types of Christianity that flourish in the Western Hemisphere; Catholicism and Protestantism. While the appointed Pope sits in the Vatican, little has truly changed throughout the Holy Church in the last 1000 years. However, when Martin Luther began the Reformation in the 16th century, the various splits of Protestant Religions were born. Presbyterians, Lutherans, Calvinists, Methodists, Pentecostals, Baptists, ect. All different forms of Protestant Christianity, all defined by their rules and restrictions on the subject of faith.
Faith is about the belief in something transcendental.
Religion is about controlling that faith.
That humanity has allowed religion to continue into the 21st century is a failure on our part as a species. As society has grown along side advancements in science and we become united more and more each day as a global family, how can we allow this disease to fester at our roots? When will we stand up and say "Enough" to this?
Control... and its weapons both fear and hate. Regardless of the particular denomination, the religious individual will fear and hate me for I am unlike him. At least until they try and convert me to their distinct path, during which they put up a façade of love and acceptance. Once it is clear that I have no desire to be swayed, they will quickly returned to the fear and hate. Unfortunately in most cases, at this point they will also try to either neutralize me or simply eliminate me.
There can be no place for unique thought, personal growth or dissimilar lifestyle among the religious. They aspire for uniformity and submission. In a "perfect world" to the religious man, all things not sanctioned by the rules of his doctrine would be erased from the world.
For too long we have allowed this to continue, for too long we have simply shaken our heads in a sad manner and tried to be the "better" people. In turn, we have allowed the plague of religion to spread to new generations. We have let the lamb become the lion. It is time we accept religion for what it truly is; the greatest Hate Crime ever perpetrated by one man upon another.
It is time we take back humanity...

Do you realize that this post actually supports the cause of religion everywhere by exposing how hopelessly daft & illogical the author ( and by extension his thesis) is? Whatever you do, never, ever, hire the author of this post as your lawyer or even manual toilet plunger operative.
You bring Duh to a whole new level of abstruse stuporus obtuseness. You FAIL at creating anything except a rationalization for retroactive birth control. When Muldoon said "New Zealanders who emigrate to Australia raise the IQ of both countries." he meant people like you. Now DIE already & decrease the surplus population

I agree with the post, and though I don't have the time to read through all the replies, I've got to admit that those are some of the most intelligent, well thought out counter-arguments to atheistic thought I've ever heard.
My actual position is hard to say. Though I bust a good friend of mine for being incredibly Christian, he is the only one which I antagonize. Hearing anybody else talk about their beliefs will not throw me into an atheistic rant. If asked by a stranger, I would probably say something along the lines of, "I'm not really religious." If I was pressed further, I would only get defensive if I felt it necessary.

I love Scientology because it is regarded as so bat-shit crazy, but its really no different than any other religion. They believe something along the lines of "humans were made by aliens who are coming back for us" (or whatever, I really don't fucking know). People like to laugh at this and call them weird, then go to a church and put magic water on their foreheads and pray to the magic baby that grew up to walk on water, heal people, feed 5000 people with a loaf of bread, tuyrn water into wine then become a zombie.
And I know that the religious Christians amoung you are sitting there thinking "Yeah, but that actually happened! There's proof and it's documented and stuff".
Fine, but I have just as easy a time believing in life on other planets than I do some dude defying the laws of physics by walking on top of water.
Religion is fucking fairy tales made up to control people. If your faith is so strong, then keep it to yourself and stop fucking up other people's lives.
Oh me of little faith.
p.s. Method's Mom is a whore, but that's OK with the Catholic church because she doesn't use condoms.

"(The world) is currently accepted to be a spinning sphereoid of greater diameter at the equator than at the poles and we even have hypotheses as to why that may be."
Haven't any of you guys got a centrifuge? Never spun a liquid up to a speed where it starts to climb the sides of the vessel, seemingly against gravity?
Fuck, I've not studied physics since I was 16 but it seems pretty clear to me that the world is of greater diameter at the equator because it's the furthest point from the axis of rotation, so this "gravity" force is having to work a little harder to keep everything in place.
-----
Here we have a perfect example of the non-use of the Scientific Method. You saw an effect, created a hypothesis that explains the effect, and then call the hypothesis "truth" based on the "proof" of the effect. Thus there's no need for you to even consider, much less test, any other hypotheses. Thanks for illustrating my point so very well.

If you want to talk about perverted religions, you are wimping out and avoiding the obvious by not mentioning Islamic fundamentalism.
Pure Islam is a beautiful and simple faith. You give yourself to God, say a few prayers and follow some simple rituals and tasks every day, and you are a Muslim. You don't need to listen to anyone else's interpretation of the Qur'an, you don't need a teacher or a leader, you don't need a mosque. You just need faith and the strength to act on that faith.
At least that's what the GOOD towelheads tell me.

I have friends and associates that are quite devout; a young woman I graduated with that is now an assistant minister, a man I grew up with who became a Wiccan Reverend, a elderly black woman who sacrifices everything for her Point Of Light mission. I consider these to be GOOD people, wonderful people who have a glimmer of something greater in their hearts.
Unfortunately...
From all I've seen in my 31 years, from all I've experienced, researched and followed, these seemingly "holy" few are terribly outnumbered by the many who would use religion for their own deplorable selfish and dogmatic ends. And while it pains me that the gentle Buddhist would have to flee in the face of progress, I can not in good conscious allow HIM to continue while Fundamentalists and Zealots ravage the modern world.
Ultimately, this was an essay about belief. As much as THEY believe they are correct and righteous, I believe they are incorrect.
The thing is, I'm NOT an atheist... more of an Imperial Agnostic. I have very few strong beliefs, but I suppose this must be one of them. The belief that an individual should NEVER lock themselves into a belief.

"...garbled, confusing, and quite frankly duller than an in-flight magazine produced by Air Belgium..."
--Kryten
I WAS going to leave it at that, but your diatribe is so bad, so flawed, so inaccurate, that I feel I ought to address some of the most egregious mistakes:
(I) "I believe in Faith. I have faith in things.
I have faith in hope, in love, in freedom, in the future."
Since faith and hope are both synonyms of trust, you effectively declare that you trust in trust. You also apparently trust in love, freedom and the future.
Love
What is this love you trust in? What do you mean by trusting in love? Are you declaring your trust in your ability to pleasure yourself? Are you declaring that you trust in the fact that love, an undefined & undefinable, vague concept continues to persist? Love implies an subject-object relationship, effectively it means that while "love" itself may not be defined, it in turn indicates a relationship between two or more entities or sometimes aspects of the same entity. So are you declaring your trust in that? What is that? Jebus, man, you also declare that love is a thing!
Freedom. Another one of those meaningless, amorphous concepts that may mean anything at all to anybody. You're endowed with the freedom to be an irrational fool, I'm free to date married women while my wife takes care of the kids, your mum is free to make you a ham sandwich. So. You declare your trust in the persistence of these things? What if in "the future" all porkers die of some horrible disease & ham is not to be had for love or money? Will your mum still be free to make you a ham sandwich then? Does that freedom mean anything at all separated from the things which define it? could you possibly be more vague & nebulous?
Future. Of all of these "the future" is the only word with a meaning, albeit an arbitrary one since the future is not something one can point to. Trusting in the future might mean trusting that time's arrow will keep true to its aim, that there will be one ( future) or that some further unspecified set of conditions you're trusting in will obtain. Frankly, this is about as obtuse & vague as an Obama speech, what with "Change we can believe in ", and that's just the first three sentences.
(II) "Theology is the study of humanity's spirituality. Faith is what an individual has. Religion is what occurs when multiple people of a like-minded faith congregate together to set up regulations for their beliefs. While still a precarious thing, faith is acceptable as long as it's kept in check by logic. Religion, however, should be met with little more than disdain and scorn. "
Theology, my Ill-educated uberite, is NOT the study of "spirituality", it is the attempt to systematize knowledge about god & his relation to his creation. Of course this definition is tendentious, since it assumes apriori the existence of god & of his having created the world or at least man, but a study of spirituality it isn't, since spirituality is concept wider in scope ( that's less defined and vaguer) than theology. Believing in magical fairy dust & brownies can also be quite "spiritual", but not necessarily religious or theological.
Faith we've already dealt with from the definition point of view, or so I'd thought. Now you declare that trust ( faith) is acceptable if kept in check by logic. By your own definitions, your own faith ( trust ) trespasses the rule you've just laid down. Nothing you've laid out so far is logical. Trust in undefined ephemera is not logical. Trust in love is not logical. Trust in freedom is not logical. Trust in "the future" is also not logical.
I could go on, but it's 4:30pm already & I want to leave at a reasonable hour. You're a tit. You wouldn't know logic if it sat you down & gave you a haircut. If you've even a shred of self respect or honour, I'd expect you to post a contrite picture of yourself in sackcloth, with a dunce cap on.
truly, Infinitus est numerus stultorum.

Faith means to believe in something/anything without having 100% proof... hence leap of faith
...faith is just as bad as religion. This post is your subjective opinion on faith, yet you manage to set out rules on how it should be practiced
my philosophy ...no expectations, no disappointments...
Reading your work is like staring at a dried up jizzm stain... the first few paragraphs are just pure masturbation, no point, no clear direction...
...then it goes on and on, painfully dreadful, monotone and repetitive... you expect some type of conclusion but all you find is that dried up jizzm stain

Atheists, Agnostics, Deists - - "How dare you let the religious fucktards know how we REALLY feel! Let's still act coy and ignore the problem!!!"

Wow.
Really?
Here's the skinny, pal:
Not all religious people are zealots.
Not all Atheists are militant.
Some of us have learned to coexist peacefully.
YOU are the ignorant one.
YOU are the one looking at the topic in black and white.
YOU are the one feeling oh-so-persecuted.
YOU are the one throwing a fit like a toddler not getting his way.
YOU are the only one willing to take up arms in a battle that only exists in YOUR mind.
YOU ARE YOUR ENEMY.
YOU ARE ACTING LIKE THE ONES YOU PIGEONHOLE.
YOU.
ARE.
PATHETIC.
So sayest Deadtoast, so it is truth.

------------------------------------------------------
I'm not particularly religious, but I think that this is a gross generalization. I know many religious people who do not try to convert others, nor do they hate people who don't believe the things that they do. I even know some Christians who actually try to follow the teachings of Jesus! Weird, huh?

To think that we have a solid understanding of existence shows ignorance. The most we can do is come to a logical conclusion based on the information presented to us. The moment we accept anything as "fact" is the moment we stop learning.

No. we have "Dive Bars" where you walk in and if they don't immediately recognize you, they punch you in the face until your swollen, toothless head hits the floor.
Then they all high-five eachother and watch re-runs of "happy days"
I'm not kidding. Fucking Happy Days.

i went into one in NYC but they served coors light? it was really cheap but tasted like watery piss.
i asked for stella in one bar and i was called an alcoholic by everyone.
the dive bar in NYC had a sexy barmaid who gave me free drinks, she thought i was australian, then scottish, then finally relised. she played franz ferdinand all night and by the end of the night she was the drunkest person in the bar. she was a southern belle who told me stories abut riding around fields on her four wheeler.

Baseball is even worse in my opinion.
The only-est sport I really watch with any enthusiasm is (American) Football.
NFL gives me a 5 month hard-on. Depending on the playoffs.
The only thing worse than baseball, is Nascar. That "Sport" Has single-handedly destroyed American credibility more than bush, clinton, and Nixon combined. That's right folks 2000 left turns and the race is over.

American football was cool when i was 12 and jerry rice played.
you should give cricket a go, in fact I would love to watch a game of cricket with a yank. i think i would find it highly amusing.

I think you're probably a reasonably intelligent guy, but you're no scholar. This is poorly written, full of inaccuracies and horrible oversimplifications. It's enough to make me wonder if your real purpose is just heat. Which is OK, but I'm under the impression that you mean to be a "serious" writer and want the writing you typically put up here to be taken and reviewed in a serious straightforward way.
Maybe you should stick to fiction.

Also,
Skrappy your examples are weak my friend:
:The flat Earth model is an ancient view of the Earth's shape which conceived of it as flat like a piece of paper or an infinite plane. This belief contrasts with the view introduced around the 4th century BC by natural philosophers of Classical Greece that the Earth is spherical.
Various cultures have had conceptions of a flat Earth, including ancient Babylon, Egypt, pre-Classical Greece and pre-17th century China. The modern belief that especially medieval Christianity believed in a flat earth has been referred to as The Myth of the Flat Earth.[1] In 1945, it was listed by the Historical Association (of Britain) as the second of 20 in a pamphlet on common errors in history.[2] Recent scholarship finds that since about the 3rd century BC, virtually no educated person in Western civilization has believed in a flat Earth.[1][3]
Jeffrey Russell states that the modern view that people of the Middle Ages believed that the Earth was flat is said to have entered the popular imagination in the 19th century, thanks largely to the publication of Washington Irving's fantasy The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus in 1828.[1] Although these writers reject the idea of a flat earth, others such as the Flat Earth Society accept or promote the hypothesis. The hypothesis of a Flat Earth has long been contradicted by overwhelming evidence as well as by the modern understanding of planet formation and physics, and the scientific community now dismisses the notion as pseudoscience.:
I'm not going to bother getting into the fossil thing.

seriously, much of my childhood was devoted to religion. therefor, nothing bores me more than discussing spirituality, whatever your opinion is. so i'll just leave it at that.
i just found it funny that you think that your opinion is more valid than atheism or organized religions, all the while saying that people who think they have the truth are nutjobs. kinda ironic.

Come on Caul, thought occurs in the skull, but that little voice known as the "mind" isn't exactly anywhere, read some Descartes and you will see what I mean. I never said my opinion was more valid, I just cant stand anyone that speaks in "absolutes" when it comes to anything spiritual or religious. When spirituality is virtually the most un-absolute topic in our universe. I feel that saying "We don't know" makes more sense than making the extreme claim of ITS THERE or IT ISNT THERE.

Caul, its not any different, its more of a difference of my opinion/terminology. In my opinion an atheist completely disredits ANY belief in anything spiritual at all. Clearly we as people have a spirit, some would call it "thought" or "mind." The lack of any ability for science to show us where this exists in the body, or an inability to quantify it at this point leads me to believe, for now, that there is something in our world that exists beyond quantification. If and when it is quantified then my opinion of it may change, but for now I'm comfortable with saying that there is something there, we just dont know enough about it to give it a name. Let alone make assumptions on how it thinks.

i thought our mind came from that brain we have in our skull. there's your scientific breakthrough.
seriously, much of my childhood was devoted to religion. therefor, nothing bores me more than discussing spirituality, whatever your opinion is. so i'll just leave it at that.
i just found it funny that you think that your opinion is more valid than atheism or organized religions, all the while saying that people who think they have the truth are nutjobs. kinda ironic.

Unfortunately all people, be they religious or Atheist, all succumb to the primal drive of humanity's need to belong to a group. When you say, "We should do away with THEM!" the other side is saying the exact same thing.
The balance lies in not being militant about your beliefs. Letting others do as they choose as long as they afford you the same comfort.
As an Atheist, I am angered and embarrassed by the militant Atheist. The only time to become quasi-militant is when laws are enacted that are clearly religious in nature (blue laws and gay marriage are the only two I can think of) and infringe on your "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness".
Speaking in this manner just makes you seem as ignorant as those you protest against.

I wonder if you're one of those atheists that believes in karma, those guys are hilarious.

See, even being a full blown atheist is in itself an extreme. I much rather prefer agnostism or to be an agnostic. I assume that there is something out there, but what or who it is, or how it thinks, believes, judges, acts or punishes is something that we can truly never KNOW. Anyone that says they know is a crackpot. Really they are just placing a stamp of "TRUTH" where there should be a stamp of "SPECULATION."

You sound like a recent ex-smoker. I'll explain that since you obviously won't be able to relate. The first this ex-smokers do (and I'm not talking about the ones that are "quitting", I am talking about those who have finally kicked the habit) is start preaching to smokers how they should quit. Its like they have finally "seen the light" and need EVERYONE to see it too.
Now, truth be told, I agree with what you put in the post and I am prepared to take up arms against these sons of bitches because that is the only thing they understand. But I am not ANGRY about it - I would prefer just to ignore them.
By the way, you better be loaded for fucking bear when you start this fight - because we (atheists) are A VERY FUCKING SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THE GLOBAL POPULATION. The muslim world has a larger growth rate and a better sales program.

I actually haven't read this yet, but even if every religion on the face of the Earth has it completely wrong, that doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't some kind of higher power.
I'll steal a line from Lennon and say I just believe in me, woman and me.
Beliefs are tedious, anyway. One is forced to constantly defend one's own beliefs, and shit on all others. It's simply too much work, and we all know how you feel about that.

Kaos - I do science every day. I too have faith in Science, meaning that I rely on what we have come to know as Laws of Science. The Laws of Science are really Theories that have been tested and are tested still but have yet to be disproven. According to the Scientific Method, it is necessary to test a hypothesis rigorously. The hypothesis is then modified to fit the test results and tested again until it fits (read: can explain without contradiction) all available test results. Then it can become a theory, and it gets further tested. An important thing to note about any Scientific Theory is this: It cannot be proven, only disproven.
Science developed the hypothesis that the World was flat. That hypothesis met all the testing that the Scientists of the day could do, and so it was accepted as "true". But as we know today, it is not true. As Science progressed, Scientists developed better methods of testing and applied the Scientific Method to this accepted truth, and subsequently disproved it. Through the Scientific Method we have advanced human knowledge significantly to the point where it is today. After looking at the past advances, it is surely foolish to say that what we know today is truth for all time. The World is not flat. Nor is it round. It is currently accepted to be a spinning sphereoid of greater diameter at the equator than at the poles and we even have hypotheses as to why that may be. Further advances in testing may refine those hypotheses.
The same logic may be applied to the existence of a God and subsequently, Religion. There are plenty of books that claim such a concept as a God or many Gods who want man to follow a particular set of instructions is real, but those books were written by men. Even the Q'ran which is said (by men) to be the very Words of God was penned by a man. I agree with you that there is no clear Scientific evidence that a God exists. However, and this is very important, all of the evidence that is regularly cited by antitheistic and antireligion groups as "proof" that religions are false and God does not exist is simply evidence against which the hypotheses may be tested, and *not* proof unto itself.
Fossil dinosaur bones: Science says they were buried millions of years ago, religion says God placed them there when He created the earth. It is clearly easier for you to accept the former and for Fundamentalist Christians to accept the latter, but whether you place your faith in one or the other hypothesis doesn't "prove" it to be "true". We must test those hypotheses with Science. We can show how the bones might be buried and over time turn to stone as we find them now. We can do this by setting up a test in a laboratory in which we cover the bones with soil and expose them to water and heat and pressure until the structure of the bone has been replaced with minerals from the soil and we have a fossil which we can then dig up. TA-DAA! We have done in the laboratory exactly as the Fundamental Christians claim that God did in the earth. What have we "proven" with this experiment? Nothing, except that both possibilities are compatible with these test results.
Science cannot say that There Is No God Who Has A Particular Set Of Rules. Nor can Science say There Is A God Who Has A Particular Set Of Rules. It is necessary to further test both hypotheses. If you would have Faith in Science and use Science to "prove" your claims, it is very important to understand the self-imposed limitations of Science. If eventually testing reveals evidence that there is no God, then Religions based on God will necessarily be shown to be false. If eventually testing reveals evidence that there is a God, then further testing will be necessay to determine if He has a Particular Set Of Rules and if so, which if any of the Sets Of Rules man uses are the Set that God wrote.
Until then, however, the question remains open in the mind of Science and if you truly have faith in Science and the Scientific Method, it should remain open in your mind as well. Otherwise, whether you practice a Particular Set Of Rules or you practice No Particular Set Of Rules, you're just blindly believeing in something without any tested foundation for that belief.

"Regardless of the particular denomination, the religious individual will fear and hate me for I am unlike him. At least until they try and convert me to their distinct path, during which they put up a façade of love and acceptance. Once it is clear that I have no desire to be swayed, they will quickly returned to the fear and hate. Unfortunately in most cases, at this point they will also try to either neutralize me or simply eliminate me."
Fear and hate me? Neutralize me or simply eliminate me? Dude, you live in Ohio, not fuckin' Iran! Have any religious people tried eliminating you lately?
So, let me get your argument straight. Religion is bad because it limits one's freedom of thought. Thus, religion should be eliminated. However, it is somehow ok to limit someone's freedom of thought as long as you're restricting their ability to subscribe to religious beliefs. Huh.
It seems to me that you're on the flip side of the "religous zealot" coin. An "a-religious zealot" perhaps. You both want to control what people think, the only difference is that they want to force people into religion while you want to force people out of religon.
Besides, religion really isn't the problem, it's the people who take it way too seriously. The tiny fraction out there blowing stuff up and cutting off heads. Most religious people aren't that intense. This is demonstrated by the fact that most people get along most of the time. Has anyone tried to kill you for working on the Sabbath? Probably not, although the bible does tell them to do so. Most people are fairly balanced and tend to focus on the nicer parts of religion rather than the really nutty bits.
Then again, there are the small percentage who do focus on the nutty bits. But those folks tend to be really off, so if they didn't have religion to get nutty over, I'm sure they'd find something.

While I was raised a christian and do believe that alot of the lessons taught by the bible are good ones (love thy neighbor, do unto others etc.) as I became an adult I pushed back from ORGANIZED aspect of religion because I saw some hypocracy in it that I couldn't be a part of. Seeing people become virtual lepers socially because they didnt completely agree with the rest of the congregation on certain issues (my mother being one of them), not to mention if they didnt contribute enough financially there were always looks and whispers from the others to guilt individuals into giving more. One instance that really put me off involved my 83 year old grandmother (she was catholic, I was raised Lutheran). Her church asked for an estimated amount of donation money from each of its paritioners at the beginning of each year. She pledged $X of dollars for the year, and when she fell behind she (along with half a dozen other members) had their names put on a board in front of the church for all to see and judge for not giving enough. Im not saying that religion is bad, I think it benefits people in many ways spiritually. But follwing anything blindly without having room for individual opinion is nonsense. I guess I have more of a problem with those who try to "enforce" the bibles teachings rather than "teach" them and let the student make his/her own decision about how to follow those lessons. Let God be the one to judge us all (isn't it funny coincidence how God is always refered to as HE and never as a woman? And the bible was written by a patriarchal society that considered women on the same level as slaves, amazing coincidence how that happens, just saying), God doesnt need our help.
