The Israeli military is preparing itself to launch a massive aerial assault on Iran's nuclear facilities within days of being given the go-ahead by its new government.
Two nationwide civil defence drills will help to prepare the public for the retaliation that Israel could face.
"Israel wants to know that if its forces were given the green light they could strike at Iran in a matter of days, even hours. They are making preparations on every level for this eventuality. The message to Iran is that the threat is not just words," one senior defence official told The Times.
He added that it was unlikely that Israel would carry out the attack without receiving at least tacit approval from America, which has struck a more reconciliatory tone in dealing with Iran under its new administration.
An Israeli attack on Iran would entail flying over Jordanian and Iraqi airspace, where US forces have a strong presence.
Ephraim Kam, the deputy director of the Institute for National Security Studies, said it was unlikely that the Americans would approve an attack.
"The American defence establishment is unsure that the operation will be successful. And the results of the operation would only delay Iran's programme by two to four years," he said.
Israel has made public its intention to hold the largest-ever nationwide drill next month.
Colonel Hilik Sofer told Haaretz, a daily Israeli newspaper, that the drill would "train for a reality in which during war missiles can fall on any part of the country without warning ... We want the citizens to understand that war can happen tomorrow morning".
Israel will conduct an exercise with US forces to test the ability of Arrow, its US-funded missile defence system. The exercise would test whether the system could intercept missiles launched at Israel.
"Israel has made it clear that it will not tolerate the threat of a nuclear Iran. According to Israeli Intelligence they will have the bomb within two years ... Once they have a bomb it will be too late, and Israel will have no choice to strike — with or without America," an official from the Israeli Defence Ministry said.

I'm no political expert, but considering how far Israel's proverbial cock is shoved down America's throat, I have a hard time believing that at the very least there would not be an extraordinary amount of pressure put on America by Israel (and certain lobbyists) to take part in the ensuing war this attack would inevitably create.
Now, I know many of you are more concerned about the swine flue right now (*kills self*), but what I'm wondering is this; Could you be convinced in the near future that war with Iran would somehow be a good idea for America and/or benefit its people?
Remember, when we went to war with Iraq, 85% of Americans were convinced that Iraq had nuclear weapons. If the so-called bumbling idiot, George W. Bush, could help convince so many that Iraq had nuclear weapons, are there any limits to Obama's powers of persuasion?
Israel is not even pretending that Iran already has access to nuclear weapons, yet I somehow feel like Obama could convince the majority of the American public that we would be insane not to wage war with Iran if he so chose.
Would it work on you? Could Obama and others simply substitute Iran for Iraq and demand that you call it progress? Assuming that this happens before our next Presidential elections, could you be convinced that he should stay in office on the grounds that we not change Presidents during wartime (*cough*Bush*cough*)? Does this not reek of the fear mongering which led to the 2003 invasion of Iraq to you?

Sandy: I was referring more to growing hatred for the US in the middle east and increasing support of the Taliban that seem likely to occur if we continue funding Israel's war machine and/or participate in that potential conflict.
It's funny, according to people that knew Zarqawi before the whole, "derka derka jihad" business knew him as an alcoholic who never really participated in, nor cared, about Islam. All this saber rattling and bomb dropping seems to do is give more credit to fanatical assholes with bombs strapped to their chests, aka, escalating an already volatile situation in an area where multiple religions help to easily justify murder.

Anyway; we are seeing very nearly eye to eye on this topic. the only thing that I don't readily agree with you on is the anger and hatred that America would face if we went to war with Iran.
I can only give examples of my feelings on this; much of my anger about Iraq stemmed from the pure ignorance of the situation. We were lying to our citizens, ignoring the rest of the world, and literally flaunting our ignorance like it was the red badge of courage. How many country songs a conservative movies/ pundits did you see and hear where the message basically boiled down to "I don't know know the situation in the middle east, and I don't even know where Iraq is, but AMERICA IS ALWAYS RIGHT"? Iraq was shown time and again that they didn't have WMD's. Didn't have the means to manufacture them, and didn't have involvement in 9/11, but we ignored that and picked a fight anyway. To this day, there are still people who will argue and say that Iraq was the right thing to do to "protect our freedom".
If there were evidence that Iran was developing nuclear weapons, and they were making a move to use them on anybody, then I think that the world as a whole would not demonize us for attacking. Likewise, if Israel does attack and we do not get involved, then I don't really see that being a huge backlash on us, either; tacit permission or not. T
his is all a huge generalization, and I could be resoundingly wrong, though.

Even so, that doesn't seem to matter at all if Ahmadinejad refuses to back down, which seems likely. Israel has been making very, very good on their threats as of late, so an attack in that case seems imminent. I put certain things in bold on purpose, but I suppose I'll elaborate on why; The fact that we fund Israel's military (I believe we send more money to them than any other country) and would have to give "tacit approval" for an invasion only draws more attention and hatred upon the US. Not to mention that our close ties and Israel's political influence on America are incredibly strong, that's not a conspiracy theory, in fact, no respected journalist would deny that. Combine that fact with the buddy buddy relationship between Russia and Iran, and there seem to be multiple scenarios in which America can get dragged into another stupid fucking conflict.
P.S. Fuck you sage, not for the retal, but because I know you really don't care about any of these things. You are the worst kind of person (imo) for not at least having anything that even remotely resembles an opinion on any of this, it really is unfathomable.

No, Obama could not substitute Iran for Iraq. That doesn't really make sense to me. I was in the Army at the time we invaded Iraq, and I want to go on the record of being part of the 15%. I even tried my hand at being a conscientious objector, but it served no purpose. Bush was a raging fear mongerer, but I really don't get that vibe from Obama. What I'm trying to say is that if Obama pushes a war with Iran, there will probably be real evidence backing up his stance, not straw grasping like "Mobile WMD plants".
